**** Official Fallout 4 Thread ****

when it says correct match it means not just the letter but the location of the letter is correwct too

so 0 matches is very useful as you can eliminate anyword that has any one of those leters in those positions.

hover over a word and it puts it in the bottom right ready toenter and its easy to see at aglance if anything matches up

There are some hidden words among the random characters that resets the number of tries. If you keep getting locked out, leave one try, and start all over. Hacking 4 (IIRC) will not lock you out of terminals. Nick Valentine can hack terminals for you (and Cait can open locks). Can take time. Target the npc to order him/her about, then target terminal/lock. Sometimes they get stuck in a loop (if already opened?). Misses, with zero match will tell you a lot more than small matches. Then it's basically whatever feels right.

Going to start my play through of Fallout 4 today, having never played a Fallout game  I was wondering if there are any tips/must knows which would be handy knowing straight from the start :D

I put the game on SSD. Even then, loading in/out of areas is painful, so HDD...? Maybe even worse.

Learn to mod. It's not so bad actually with mod installers. Really improve the experience. E.g. I use a custom launcher that gives me 110 FOV. Simple thing, but much better experience.

Use inventory filters (weapons, apparel, aid...) when trading / scrapping. Raw foods not that useful, I pretty much use stimpacks exclusively, although cooking is best.

I have my money for ammo, and special armor and weapons (last minute, spray'n pray, ...). Buying stimpacks and drugs a bit of a waste. Plenty to loot around.

They don't explain the interface much, so if you need a 'how to', look it up. The game is full of hidden or obfuscated shortcuts (like weapon / item shortcuts).

Save constantly, quicksave is F5, as much as you can bear. Bit lame, but otherwise can be frustrating.

Don't shoot everything, and you can run away from most things.

I find it better to specialise in 'utilities' at first. Charisma for special dialogues, hacking and lockpicking, armor crafting and weapons crafting, and later, science (intelligence). There are some low level skills that can help accelerate things (xp, and amount of loot). Makes a weak combat character, but better 'rpg' experience. Look for build recommendations on YouTube. Not easy, limited number of skill points to start with. Decide what you wnat to prioritise. A **** that just pummel things (Grognack!), a more dialogue-oriented RPG, and/or exploration. If you gonna play melee, best play a junky too, with Armor crafting. Look for perk Requirements to setup your attributes. This is pretty much locked once you commit, so watch out. I went charisma, Intel, and agility for critical.

VATS is OK, straight up combat more fun. I mostly use vats to shoot grenades mid-air. If you see a grenade indicator pop up, either do that, but mostly run. Npc's have godlike grenade accuracy. And stay away from burning cars.

Base building not essential. It can be fun, but 'needy'.

Ammo is a pain. .38 is the most common (pipe weapons), 308 is much better. Look everywhere, especially for fusion cores. Power Armor can help you get past most things.

When you buy / sell, vendors only have a limited amount of money, so add some of your junk in the bargain to balance it out.

Ammo, ammo ammo again. You can go through the stuff real quick.

So much stuff in that game. Stay focused, it's easy to get distracted, but can be a lot of fun sometimes (pitch battles between raiders and super mutants, random BOS assault, ...).

Right I've played a bit more (~20 hours in ~lvl 15) been gradually pushing out towards Diamond City finding new areas and taking side missions along the way...

No complaints at all about the gunplay, exploring the great world they've made and finding all sorts of loot and stuff is all fantastic. However here's the latest thing that's a bit disappointing:

Why does nobody want to talk about anything at all?! Serious question... A few times this has happened now - I stumble onto a new area which has a load of NPCs - "Ooo" I think - "... this should be interesting" and proceed to wander around trying to talk to everyone...

70% of characters are generic nobodies who just spout the same token line and I can't say anything back... the other 30% will generally say (and let me say) 1 thing, that's all you get (unless they're a merchant then you get to say 2 things with the second one being "sell me stuff"). Once an NPC has said their 1 thing they then won't converse with you anymore... It's so annoying!!!

Over time it's beginning to feel like what they are basically saying is "Yeah yeah whatever, you don't care about this - don't you have some more faces you should be shooting?"

Not sure if this one has cropped up before... I stepped out of my power armour to enter a restaurant staffed by robots
turned out to be a trap!
, when I came out found my companion had decided to don it and I can't retrieve it. The exchange dialogue lets me reclaim the individual pieces but he is still wearing the chassis. If I transfer the pieces back, then he doesn't don them.

Puzzled...

That sounds odd, speaking to them, there is normally an option that says get out of the power armour. Its normally the left option when looking at the screen of the four.

When you transfer the pieces back, you also have to select the equip button in your companions inventory. Its a button that shows up when you hover over the item in your companions inventory.

Always remove the fusion core when getting out of your armor. You don't leave your keys in the car when you go shopping, do you? :p

There are "hacking" mods. One that shows you only the correct word, you still need perks to access higher difficulty terminals. I'm considering using this, what's the point of putting perks to something if I still have to do it manually.

Another one that lets you hack any terminal from the start but you only get 2 or 3 tries, with more perks in hacking you get more tries and it makes it easier.

Take it is these two mods you referring too ??

This one shows you the right word, you still need to corresponding skill to break the terminals though. I am using this, have no patience with the mini games so love this little mod. :)

And for those of you that like the minigames, the same creator of the above mod has done a opposite mod, giving you 20 passwords to pick between. Can access ANY terminal from the start though, but only have 3 attempts and lockout is 5 min (vanilla game is 10 seconds). For each skill you take you get another attempt with this mod.

Worst case, respawn it via the console?

Strictly that's cheating but if it's a game malfunction which has caused the problem I could probably live with it. Worst case, FT back to Sanctuary where my original PA is parked up and use that (or just re-load a slightly older save!).

True, but you're just getting back at the system if the game cheats you out of a hard earned PA :D

tbh I've started giving myself copper from the console as it's bitch to source from junk items. There'll be a factory somewhere that has boatloads of it, I just haven't found it as yet...

Scrapper rank 1 gives you copper from scrapping modified weapons, such as modified pipe rifles and pipe pistols you find as you wandering around. As to a factory location, well incase you don't want to know it I make a spoiler for it.
Watt's Consumer Electronics has quiet a bit of junk that contains Copper, maybe not a boatload though. :p
I also found that using the "tracking" system helps me a lot getting resources that is in short supply, actually have over 100 adhesive right now, and I have not made a single Vegetable Starch yet. not figured out how to track an item if having any already, part from removing them from workbench and putting them into a container or follower. Hopefully there be a mod that lets you use track function even if you have a few in the workbench.

Can't remember from top of my head but you can do it when you're in your inventory Junk tab. Think if you press C it gives you options.
