yeah very excited, ffxi was a fantastic MMO - it had its flaws, but am very confident square has learnt a huge amount to make ffxiv special
(and yes i know it says THEAD in the title... im going with thats the special Eorzean term for forums posts) midnight fails outside of l4d2 too ya know :o

yeah it did suffer at times from the RMTs, i was mainly a crafter and found myself countless times being screwed by RMTs. i hear now the situation is a bit more under control and square have had the 7 years of ff11 to find ways of combating RMT,

it seems they're adding a lot more solo content for ffxiv, but im sure the epic multiplayer stuff that was in ff11 will find its way across too. i far prefered ff11 over wow because of its neccessity to team up, spending weeks camping HNMs, dynamis, sky etc
also by and large a friendlier player base imo

i reckon closed beta will start in feb, open beta in summer. released by autumn 2010!

with betas, do they normally wipe your character info in the transition from beta to full release?

Yeah depending on the company it depends what they do.Some let you keep the names of your characters you made, some give you a little present to go into retail/live with, some give you an enhanced subscription offer but like 99% of them will wipe all characters from beta to retail/live.

Just hope they don't use that crap Playonline is it? Have a break from playing then to come back and find out they have deleted your account, after like 3 months of no activity.

yeah no playonline thank god
will prefer it if they wipe characters in beta, providing i get in id love to experiment with classes a bit then be able to make an educated choice on what i want to stick with on my main.

massive fan of crafting and fishing so i think ill start out as fisherman and cook

I was a monk/war in FFXI. 1 of my favourite aspects with FFXI is the job system where you can switch to another role and remain on the same character! no multiple characters needed for another class you felt like playing - hope this remains for XIV

well with the armoury system in 14 it seems that you'll be able to change character class out in the field, even in the midst of battle. equip a sword and you'll become a warrior, staff and you'll become mage etc

interesting to see how they implement that

FFXI was great if you where able to make some great friends or join a great LS, otherwise it was isolating and quite cold.

I first started playing during the Rise of Zilart expansion release in Japan. I had a great time in an "importers" LS and we all stuck together. I left after about 4 months and joined later on when it was released in the US, this time it was really bad. I hardly met any non-selfish people on there and every LS I joined was just awful. So I left again.

Missing the game yet again, I joined a third time when it was released in the EU. This time it was simply amazing and I ended up capping my level and made some really great friends who I'm still in contact with today (french people! :p) It was all give and take and everyone spent the time with eachother instead of trying to blast through the game and claim everything for themselves. Some of the best memories I have is of joking around during the festivals, and helping powerlevel each others level 1 subjobs :D

In my opinion FFXI was the best MMO there ever was. It did have its faults, however I believe the very nature of the MMO genre is riddled with faults anyway and there will never be a perfect one. Thats why FFXI was so good, it based itself upon the strengths of what an MMO is, instead of trying to cater for all the instant gratification kids.

As it stands I'm much more excited about FFXIV than I am FFXIII after reading the importers reviews. FFXIV SHOULD be a whole lot better than FFXI, especially if the same devs are developing it.

yeah i joined quite early and found my way into an incredibly friendly social japanese LS on shiva. even though only the leaders could speak any english we had a great time. i then went on to some EU endgame linkshells and found a lot of the players rude and greedy.
im gonna pick my LS carefully next time, maybe even start up a crafters social shell
