If you cannot afford the extra 20 quid for the GEIL then The NR at 170+ is pointless too.

Just get some bog standard DDR2 and be done with it! :D

LOL! Ill just wait for ram prices to drop. I have patience. Then looks like ill have better ram than you :p

Hi all

Anyone running G.Skill 2GB DDR2 NR PC2-6400 (2x1GB) CAS5 Dual Channel Kit on the DS3?

If so any good for overclocking?

Cheers

The NR doesn't even POST on the DS3 unless you up the voltage by 0.4V (to 2.2V) when it's specced at 1.9-2.0. I read that some other guy on here did that and he said it runs smoothly, but when I try it hangs after a few minutes idle, and sooner when busy. Don't know if that's just my sticks that can't cope with the overvoltage/heat or if he has better cooling or what.
That's with F6 BIOS, not tried with the new F7 yet, but I doubt any different.

Just spend the extra tenner and get the Corsair C5s or 20 more for the Geil talked about above as they will work.

Cheers for the info. Thats more the answer i was looking for. Looks like they are a no go! Thanks again ilh. ;)

I did mean to say it came out as i updated to it and F6 and F7 have been good releases. F6 let me go up another 15mhz on the FSB and the F7 has made a few things more secure.

any of you DS3 guys wanna tell me what kinda temp the north bridge chipset cooler gets to?
just to the touch? like 1 to 10, 10 being burning hot

Anandtech review of the DS3 bios updates @ http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2854

Gigabyte has certainly improved the overclocking ability of the GA-965P-DS3 motherboard with the F7 BIOS. We had similar overclocking results with our X6800 CPU but unfortunately could not verify any improvements with the E6300 or E6400 processors. The reason why? It is the current 450FSB limitation with the Micron D9 based memory modules and the BIOS implementation on this motherboard. We have not witnessed this issue on Gigabyte's other motherboards in this series to date. While we have one set of Micron D9 based memory that will allow us to hit the 500FSB mark with our E6300 at a 1:1 memory ratio, all other D9 based modules in our labs fail to even POST on this board past the 460FSB range. We sincerely hope that Gigabyte rectifies this issue in short order as this one flaw really detracts from an otherwise superb motherboard for the price. Of course, if you are not into reaching the higher overclocks then this should issue should not be a concern.

Overall, we were very pleased with performance results of the new BIOS. We were afraid the overclocking improvements would come at the expense of memory performance or stability. However, Gigabyte figured out a way to improve overclocking through BIOS optimizations and has if anything improved stability at the higher FSB speeds in our testing. This is impressive to us, and hopefully the users of this board will also be impressed with the F7 BIOS.

In fact, the F6 BIOS introduced an issue for users of Creative Labs X-FI cards as the card would not be recognized properly or would just stop working altogether depending upon the combination of other components in the system. Our current F7 beta BIOS does not have this issue.

Seems F7 has done a fair bit more than just add Quad support. Still need to try my NR with it.

And is it just me or are the memory prices starting to drop again? :) I'm sure the Corsair 6400 C5s were the same price as the 5400 C4s, and i'm sure the Geil Ultra Lows were over £200.

Yeah the Geil costs less this week than it did on last weeks TWO offer.

I have that exact problem with my xfi, glad its sorted with the new bios. F6 is so much better but when I really puched clocks it made the xfi not be recognised by windows. I was holding abck because of it. cheers.

What chip? E6300 or E6400? Did you need to raise the vcore? Think I might give this bios a shot.

actually it was a e6600. Whats the highest vcore anyone has been running? im a bit worried about going higher than 1.5v

heya all, i've just bought this mobo now and am doing some research/collecting (drivers/bios) etc.

i have the latest bios but the software seems to create a floppy disk. i dont have a disk drive and am surprised there is no option to download an iso.

anyone know how to make one from the exe gigabyte give you?
