Yeah, thats what I need to make up 4 sticks... I might even go back with the corsair cos its better IMO than the Geil... Either way, I have a spare pair and I need to buy another pair cos they are all mixed up!

I should have gone with 2x1GB in the first place and have none of these issues.

AS for the money you can expect bck off your others?

Seriously canot give a true figure, but 65-70 sounds about right... 2 Weeks or 2 years, its still used and has a lifetime guarantee so it makes no odds how old it is really.

Why do you think its better for me to just hold on to mine after only 2 weeks? - I would rather build up a whoel new PC with it than lose a few quid... Explains why I have so many PCs though!

thing i want to ask...is there really need to have 2GB??? i mean do u use up to that? i find myself these days..only use comp to do uni work and play games...and burn the odd dvd whenever...what u guys doo??

im finkin of getting some really good ram now..like PC7200/8000...

:D

1GB vs 2GB

Well, your correct in one thing... The vast majority of people who have 2GB probably dont use it never mind need it.

I however, do like to run a fair number of things at once... I also run VMs too which desperately need all the RAM I have, esp when running 2 or more VMs, and then encoding several hours worth of video footage on half a dozen apps, then yes, I do myself need it.

Am I suffering now Im on 1GB - Too bloody right I am. This thing is a pile of junk compared to my 2 main AMDs for what I use them for...

fatrakoon is pretty much right, except for when it comes to vista. vista uses about 400mb ram on idle and if you put in 2gb of ram instead of 1gb it will use about 600mb of ram as its knows its got more to play with. i've got vista 64 ultimate on my turion 64 x2 laptop and desktop with 2gb ram in each. its your just a casual user just using xp then yes 1gb is enough, 768mb min.

Hey all,
Got the AE Aego M 2.1 speakers to go with my DS3 system, but can anyone tell me which output I hook the speakers up to?

I hate the Intel Audio junk that keeps asking what you got in this hole, what whats that? - My kids when they were 3,4, and 5 asked me less questions!

Anyway, its the green one mate.

Ho, too true...

Vista will take up all your RAM, and free up enough RAM to run any other program you load up. I have not tested out a recent version, I have played enough with it however to know that I have no intention of ever using it. I was a bit iffy on moving to XP to be honest, and only stuck with it because of games, now however, most of the games I care about will run under Linux, and quite frankly next to nothing of the newer games actually impress me anymore because its mostly all eye candy and junk gameplay, so once XP support is stopped, so is my use of windows.

XP needs 768Min?

Nah, I would risk it and say that 512MB is the min

Its annoying to see 256MB in a fairly respectable PC, but most people really only have a PC for internet / EMails and for this 512MB is plenty. Office however, yeah 512 is an absolute minimum, but in truth, if you plan on doing anythign thats actualyl useful and have at least some resemblance of speed, then a GIG should really be on the menu.

Either that, or use Windows 2000, which IMHO is a vastly underrated OS and is very much on par with XP in many ways... Better in some & worse in others.

The official minimum spec for XP Pro from MS is 64MB

  :D

Don't make me laugh Microsft. Has anyone at MS ever tried to open Word on an XP machine with 64MB? 'Cos I have and it takes long enough to put the kettle on, run a bath, clip your nails, make tea, have bath, shave, get dressed, go out, get pi$$ed, come home, make some pizza, wake up, get over your hangover and go buy another 256MB before its done

Laughable minimum spec

XP Minimum = 64MB
64MB on 2K also... With 32MB Minimum supported!!!

I have often wondered who comes up with these one liners?

They crack me up every time!!!

Ho Ho sodding Ho!

Actually I have tried 128MB and its disgusting to think that there are still people out there who use it like that, but 64MB??? I just wonder if ... No, surely not?

i know the official amount of ram isnt 768mb lol. its just 768mb has the least amount of performance decrease, 512mb is pretty slow, 768mb is pretty decent, not much difference when you use 1gb.

what i meant is that if i was recommending someone to buy a budget pc i would say get 768mb at the minimum, pref 1gb.

It is the minimum spec for XP. Not XP with Word.

Anyway minimum requirements means to get the software running. It doesn't mean to get the software running to an acceptable speed.

I know, I'm just having some fun :D

Having said that I have 2 machines at work which have 512MB and they're pretty acceptable. They only have light duties though. Outlook, AD, some remote control software and incident handling software. They run ok

Have to make sure my team leader at my client's site doesn't see this as he can see why we need more than 512MB on our Dell laptops... :( Try running exchange, AD, ISA, SMS admin consoles along with normal apps etc :(

Those sticks are guaranteed to get you 400FSB. Will they go higher? Yes, they will... Should do 430 with ease ( Never can guarantee on over clock though ) so 3Ghz should be possible and actually probable.

Some get higher, some dont.

Only way really is to go higher rated RAM and then you know the RAM will not be the limiter should you find yourself hitting a certain limit... I mean, if you have a 6300 then you are asking just over 485FSB out of RAM thats only rater to 400.

What CPU do you have?

i have E6300...
and DS3 Board..

Im looking to spend no more than 120/130 for the ram... maybe PC8000 ones??

Yeah, really you need to get RAM that better yes.

Dont get me wrong here... There are a lot of people out there who have indeed got the Geil 6400 and they have hit 3.4, btu lets be honest with ourselves here... You have posted to ask that question, so you are not on their level.

I would either get the Geil6400 and see what you get and be happy with it, or get the 8000 and see where you end up that way?

But realistically you are not going to get 3.4Ghz using the Geil6400.

If its something for you to consider mate... My corsair 6400 @ 400FSB is faster than the Geil @ 430 - This is due to the strap being set to 1333 as opposed to 1067... I dont know if you know about this, but its sort of like changing up the gears on a car... It loses power for a bit, and the performance drops off a little.

Couple this with the fact that the CPU will be crap from about 360FSB to 399 and then starts getting better again from 401 onwards, and wont be worth overclocking unless you get well over 430FSB, kind of makes it useless in a very large band so getting it at 400 and keeping it there is a good option, unles you fancy going serious and all the way

Getting one of these babies with a 6300 next week. Putting it in a Lian Li PC7 Plus.

will This memory kit be ok for OC'ing if I want to give it a bash?

Also got the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro. Is the stock grease on the thing any good and will it be ok for Ocing up a bit? I'm not crazy about reaching dizzy new benchmarks, I'd just like to get a bit of extra "oomph" for the bucks. :)
