It should be fine. They're virtually the same board.

thanks for the heads up, my 7300gt will arrive on monday so i can finnially overclock my e6420, its on stock cooling so what speed do you think i should go up to, 2.7 - 2.8 stable?

also i plan to get watercooling to get it past 3.0ghz stable.

You should be able to get an e6420 to 3.2-3.3ghz on air (Not with the stock cooler tho.). A bit more with water if you've got a decent chip.

what do you mean by chip, i have 965p if thats what you mean as i heard its a very good overclocking chip, motherboard is a DQ6 so it has the odd silent cooling thing.

Hey.

I've been recommended in the general hardware forum to include this board in my new PC build.

I've been looking at the details, and I noticed that aside from heatsinks on the northbridge and the southbridge that there is no other type of cooling. i.e. fans.

My last motherboard, which is no where as near as good as the DS3 had fans on both the N/S bridges.

Why is there no other cooling solutions, and does this not effect performance, especially if this is meant to be an overclocking board?

I am only asking this as it has been a while since I built a system, and am curious more than anything else.

Also, I note there is only 2 PCI slots, I would have thought there would be more. Again, my previous board had 5.

I don't think any P965 boards have fans. And tbh most older boards that had fans didn't really need them.

The DS3 has three PCI slots, and the DS3P has two because of the extra PCI-E slot. There's only so much space on a motherboard.

hi - i also haven't built for a while and was recommended this board.

I'm going to get a E6600 core 2 duo 2.4ghz - just wondering what speed ram is stock for that chip, and therefore what speed ram to get for an easy 3.0ghz overclock? I was looking at corsair 2gb XMS2 6400C4 but i am tempted by 4gb of something instead.

anyone using the onboard sound? i only need 5.1 so i'm hoping this will be good enough for games since i have had no end of problems with my audigy 2 drivers.

Hey there,

The FSB for the 6600 is 266MHz. 6400 DDR2 ram is 400MHz, so there is plenty of headroom for overclocking. For example my 6600 is at 378 FSB is 3.4GHz. My chip my go higher but its running perfect at this anyway. If you ran the memory at its rated/stock speed of 400Mhz, then the 6600 would be running at 3.6GHz (400 x 9 = 3600).

Unless you are doing encoding or CAD etc then you'll find 4GB is a bit of a waste at the moment. I've got 2GB and don't think I've seen it actually use more than 1GB during gaming etc. Upto you though.. ram is cheap at the moment, so it is a good time to buy.

Onboard sound now a days is generally good. I was running an Audigy 4 PCI but took it out and just used the onboard and found no difference on quality.

Your spec looks good on that list. Nothing stands out as being a problem :)

hmm - ok if the extra ram is currently not needed i might leave that for now. I've got to wait 2 months to buy all this anyway so hopefully they might release Crysis recommended specs by then... :) If that doesn't need it nothing will :p

If you are not interested in RAID, then just using the OnBoard is just fine.

There are 6 ports... 4 Orange and 2 Purple.

The 2 purple ones are using the same controler as the IDE Port.

So, the PC sees the 4 orange ones first, then the IDE Port, and then the Purple ones.

If you are to use them as just normal HD ports, they are fine.

i however, would like to raid two sata2 drives. whch controller do i go for? whats the difference? any problems i should know about running them in vista? im intending to have xp and vista on sepereate partitions btw.
