Tis a shame though, could have been a huge online game, 10x bigger than it is. I convinced loads of my mates from WoW to come over and play it and some of them even upgraded their PCs so they could and most of them stopped playing after a few weeks because of the hackers. I feel a bit of a **** for wasting all their time.

Albeit this is share across multiple platforms, but 8 millions unique and active players every week is pretty damn big, probably some of the highest there is (excluding the big players (read: free2play) like LoL, etc.)
Battlefield 4 + Hardline have around 6 mil for comparison.
I highly doubt hackers will continue to go away any time soon. Rockstar have actually made an effort, even though not exactly clearly identifiable, by implementing various detection methods and just generally cracking down on modded accounts by introduced much more stricter ban offences. From what I can tell some areas of these mod menus are a no-go zone 'cause you're practically setting yourself up for a swift insta-ban, so many people have turned away from modding (myself included, although I never had the intention to grief others). Shame that the more simpler things like invincibility and god mode still prevail.
Just don't "prod the bear", if you will. Most hackers/modders/whatever you wanna call 'em don't go all out with the sole intention of crashing an entire servers game for "fun" (based off my past encounters.) Usually you have to provoke them some way, whether it be in chat or mechanically in-game. Then they go after you. Instead just swiftly leave the server, or better yet, report them. I don't know how effective the in-game reporting system is exactly (I'm sure it works in one way or another), but you can also report via Rockstar support or one of their e-mails. Seems like a bit of effort, but just grab a screenshot and attach to the ticker, fill in some deets, and away you go. I only rarely do this to someone who has particularly been excessively griefing, but I've yielded good result thus far (though I do copy+pasta the email content to other people I was playing with, probably helps having multiple cases against...) May not seem like much getting one or two people banned, but they're likely part of some 1337 hax0rz forum and will cry saying the tools they use got themselves banned, thus potentially turning away new comers. Same with their friends, etc. Also let's RS know there's still hackers prevalent (I'm sure they know this well enough any way
![Big Grin :D :D](/styles/default/xenforo/vbSmilies/Normal/biggrin.gif)
) and will continue to introduce new anti-cheat methods. I wish the game was better at it's core; server browser, dedicated servers, modding servers, etc. But obviously the game's current state is raking in cash via micro-transactions and has a fairly substantial player base, so it's working for them as intended.
Anyway, all of that's probably to be expected from any online game. It just seems so prevalent here 'cause it's a hugely popular game (that isn't F2P/moba/mmo/etc., those types of games), and the fact that the nature of the game is (personally) to grind-y, so many people result to mods to boost their level/cash/etc. to gain access to the more "fun" content, but end up getting carried away with their new found powers.
