Official Home Gym Building Thread

You can always just chuck it back off your back worse case scenario. That's assuming it doesn't topple you forward. I'll be getting safety bars as soon as they come in stock though. Who knows when that will be. I was tempted to get an 18mm rod in the meantime and to stick it through the pins, but not sure it would be strong enough?

hmmm, imo catchers are for accidents as much as failed lifts
You never know when something didn't warm up right and you get a sudden twang and find yourself needing to bail

yeah it's why I asked the question. it's also why I bought a decent well recommended power rack and didn't cheap out on ones with smaller weaker catcher bars.

the lift I failed had 200kg on it iirc. i hadn't worked my way up to it properly

I actually started my home gym build around October last year - I train at 6AM most days and my local gym was getting silly busy even at that time so decided to clear out the junk from the garage and convert to a gym - was alternating between garage and local gym, but obviously been in the garage full time since lockdown.

I cant see my going back to a commercial gym in future - all I really need is a set of dumbbells (was all ready to get them and then lockdown happened and couldn't get them anywhere)

Awesome setup. What mats and bench are those mate and can you do hamstring curls with the bench? I am trying to find a good one that'll let me do leg ext and ham curls but it's hard to tell from the ones I see on powerhouse fitness etc. Cheers

Not at that level but "fairly" experienced at chucking it off my back if needed. But I do see the need for them but this is more of a rig to keep ticking over in the meantime and some extra's when gyms re-open etc.

Mats are from Ark https://www.arkmat.co.uk/gym-mats/easy-pro-gym-flooring-mats/easy-pro-gym-flooring-mats.html

Bench is by Body Solid https://www.fitness-superstore.co.u...ne-decline-utility-bench-full-commercial.html

and you can add a leg developer for both extensions and curls - https://www.fitness-superstore.co.uk/body-solid-leg-developer-attach-6-roller.html

Had bought plates and a barbell 4 years ago for a gym I never got round to setting up. Bought them for £152ish and sold em for nearly £500.

Crazy times.

Im now left with a CF480 rack I never put together and a Body solid bench that seems to be going for £250+ on ebay.

People are paying daft prices right now. I suppose its justified by gym membership savings.

That's nothing I sold my plates alone for £900. I sold my dumbells for £5K (all seperately).

I think I messed up by not selling them as a job lot. It probably discouraged a lot of people. I had the dumb idea of splitting them into pairs and seeing how they'd go.

My 2x20kg went for £147 which was the best. Bar went for £180. Then I had 2x15s, 2x10s and 4x1.25s that made up the rest.

I'll probably get the rack and bench on sale soon. I don't know how much they will make but maybe £600 ish.

It depends on where you are and the demand. My bench when I put it up the best bid I got was £150. Plenty people wanted it posted. I explained it cannot be due to its size and me having nothing to package it in. They then got mouthy saying I'd get more if I offered postage. No **** sherlock.

I decided to keep it. I paid like £500 for it. I'm going to offer it to a mate for £250.

I got a little over £150 for 56kg of 1 inch plates (the plastic type with sand or something like that in) an EZ culr bar and a straight bar (very cheap one with plastic sleeve on it). I think prob would have gone for more but was local pickup. They were not used at all as everything else i have is olympic. Fella seemed delighted with them.

Missing the gym as well (mainly crossfit stuff) but missing squatting big time.

Got a borrowed bar for now, 120kg of weights and build my rack yesterday.

Bloody bargain - made by a local fabricating place made it, including J hooks, and all fixings. They've been building 2 racks a day for last 6 weeks! Can't keep up with demand!

Wife can also use the top support for pullups etc and I've got a pull up bar already on the wall above it.

Like that, very neat solution. Could you stand inside the frame and mount the bar on the other side? The lower wall supports would act as a catcher (albeit not adjustable). Is there enough space to squat inside the frame?

yes there would be enough room inside but the bottom supports are only around a 12" off the ground so the plates would probably be close to hitting the floor anyway if you know what I mean.

Very pleased with it - squatted twice this week already. Basically get the kids sat down to dinner, 10 minutes to warm up, 5 sets of 5 for now, done in 25 minutes or so.

I'm with you on that, loving this home gym setup. No queues for equipment, no one getting grumpy because I'm using the squat rack for hours, no travelling to or from, no one judging.

exactly - I'm all for back to gym/crossfit as I love the people/place I train - but this is great to just keep ticking over for now.

they look like they are less than a foot off the ground. therefore no way are they catchers. you would be dead before the bar hit them.

More a comment that if a fabricator was making these bespoke you could tailor the lower part of the frame to suit and provide a rudimentary safety device.
