Official Home Gym Building Thread

Sold my last one on ebay with no probs.

Now got a Bodymax CF415 which I find very good and saves lots of space for me as I can fit this in my garage.

If you don't mind me asking, what did you sell and how much did you get for it? Did you sell it to someone local?

I was actually looking at the CF415 or the CF470. I'll have a gander on eBay and see what there is local to me. Cheers!

The rack was the Bodymax CF475 Heavy Power Rack and I sold it with a CF430 bench, weights & 7ft bar etc, can't remember exact price but around £500 iirc cash on collection.

buyer offered me around £50 less than advertised so I sent counter offer £25 less, we completed deal outside of ebay thus avoiding charges. Think he was from Notts around 30 mile away.

I didn't like my CF415, used it for about 3 months before getting a full cage and i'm much happier with that.

They are good if space is limited, but if you've got the space for a full cage, i'd stick with that to be honest.

I found the CF415 a pain to adjust, the rear bar across the bottom limited bench positions, so shoulder pressing and even incline were impossible (safely anyway). It used to lean to one side slightly which didn't fill me with confidence when doing heavy squating. Also you don't get a pull up bar or band mounts/pegs.

I've got mine in the corner now and i just use it as a dipping station.

OP here.

Not posted here for ages. Didn't realise this thread had taken off so well. All my pcitures have since vanished.

Keep up the good work everyone and Mike that gym is just ridiculously good.

I have a few questions are you in the UK? I'm not up on my gear these days but your stuff all looks american in style. Also how much did the building cost and was it done by yourself or a mate or did you have to hire someone you have never dealt with before?

I'm thinking of doing something similar in the future.

Hi there

Thanks for the feedback and yes this thread has been a good source of information.

Yes I'm from the UK, the equipment is from UK suppliers. Can give you a full run down if you like?

Regarding cost, well, a lot.... The building itself is built to habitable housing standards, it's basically a bungalow with a storage loft. The total cost of the project for the foundations, building, finishing, paint, air con, electronics, stereo, gym equipment etc was just shy of £50k. As mentioned, this building could be used for any purpose if it wasn't a gym.

I commissioned an architect for the plans and planning approval, a builder to build it, followed by me fitting it out with all of the equipment.

Feel free to ask for any more info.

Mike

Hi Chaps,

I've just joined after looking for information and stumbling across this thread.

I did put a post up in a thread of an av forum I'm a member of but I think you guys would be great help, I hope you don't mind the copy a paste.

In the next two months I will be have a gym built at the end of my garden.

After loads of thought I have decided to go with a log cabin like the one in the link below:

http://www.gardenbuildingsdirect.co.uk/log-cabins/billyoh-winchester-log-cabin/23919

The size I have gone for is 3m x 5m, I like the idea of the longer building but might still change this for 4.0 x 3.5, it all depends on equipment which I will get to in a bit!

This comes to £2611 (5m) and I will need to get a chippie and a sparks in to do bits.

I've gone for the 19mm Floor and roof and also the 44mm wall thickness with the double glazing option on the doors and windows.

I've gone for the upgraded roof covering as well, I wont this to last!!

I have the whole project coming in at around £3150.

I will have a heater up there but do you think that with the thicker floors, walls, roof and the double glazed option this will be warm enough in the winter?

Do you think I'm going about this right way? I was considering have a frame built, cladding the outside, insulating the walls, plaster boarding and plastering.

This was looking at coming in at around £4500 and to be honest is a bit to much of a squeeze, I'm getting married in July and that's eating into the gym budget unfortunately :)

The equipment I'm planning on putting in is:

Power rack with high and low pulleys, chins etc...
Bench
7ft Olympic bar and weights

Bodymax CF475 Premium Strength Package at Powerhouse Fitness

Dumbell set 5kg - 30kg 6 pairs and rack
Bodymax Pro Rubber Dumbbells - Set 7 - WTFD0134 at Powerhouse Fitness

A treadmill, not sure what one yet, I might pick this up second hand, I would imagine there's a few January purchases going cheap!!

I will also add a couple of Olympic dumbbell bars and collars, a preacher attachment for the bench and couple of Olympic ez bars.

I did train for a couple of years about 5 years ago but I've been out the game for a while now (Job took over) and I'm a little rusty!

I think the kit I'm planning on putting in is all I need but am I missing anything?

I've done a quick plan based on the 3m by 5m and using the sizes of the equipment listed. (See Photo)

Running machine is on the left and folded in pic 1

The rack is in the middle and the bench is on the right, I ve added an Olympic bar so you can see how much clearance I have

I will add the rack for the dumbbells and also a frame for the Olympic bars

Can anyone give me any advice for what I might be missing, doing wrong or anything I haven't considered?

Picture 2 shows the bench inside the rack and the treadmill unfolded.

Thank you.

Another copy and paste.

Any help you guys can give will be well appreciated.

I haven't ordered the cabin yet, I'm having my drive done at the end of May and the builder is doing the concrete base at the end of the Garden at the same time so I still have plenty of time to plan!

My plan with the floor is to lay an 8mm laminate over the 19mm T&G grove but going the other way to the T&G, I will then lay a 18mm stable mat on top of that.

This will give a clearance of approx 210mm (the rack is 2160mm) from the top of the rack to the internal ridge in the centre, this will reduce as you go to the left and right due to the slope but should be ok.

Can anyone offer a slightly shorter rack that still has pull up bars and high and low pulleys that might be a better fit?

Unfortunately 2.5m height and 15 sq meters is the max you can go to without planning permission so I will build it regardless and then fit my equipment in around it, my equipment may have to change but I'm hoping I can go with what I have picked!

I'm now going for the 5m by 3m cabin so do have a little more space!

I think I might knock the dumbells on the head and just get Olympic dumbbell bars and decent collars and a shed load of plates. I can then get a light set of dumbells for the misses.

I have included two new plans, these plans show the internal dimension so represent the floor space I will actually have.

The first shows the bench inside the frame with the treadmill unfolded.

The second shows the bench outside the frame with the treadmill folded up. The treadmill can be folded simply and will kept out the way except when in use, what do you think?

First time post here, towards what I think is an excellent thread.

Just a little about where I’m at with mine. My builders are nearing the end of building my outbuilding. It cost me just shy of £15k and I’m in East London. The work included:

• Dimensions: 7.5 meters x 3 meters and at a height of 2.8 metres at the eaves and 4 meters up to the pitch part of the roof.
• All with cavity wall size 300mm (breeze blocks) with pitched roof, gutter fascia, electrics put in.
• Plaster and paint of external walls
• Clear out the existing back of the garden, level it and put in a concrete base.

The last picture I took of the outside once rendered prior to paint can be seen here http://imgur.com/KEWZht7

More or less sorted out the equipment that I want in there which will include Barbarian Line Power rack. I estimate once the whole thing is done with equipment, I would have spent another £2k.

I’ve got a dehumidifier in there to take out excess moisture and it drips water in a bucket at a rate of 40 drops per minute. Do you think this is moisture coming from the plaster/paint from the walls, or the concrete flood curing (floor was put in about 10 days ago). Cheers

Two very long posts...! :)

Regarding what kind of building you create, it is somewhat arbitrary for a gym, but the more robust, the longer it will last and the more use it has.

Regarding heating, don't bother - small spaces get VERY warm very quickly if you're exercising.

Regarding dehumidifying, the water could be coming from all sorts of places, depending on the damp proofing applied, the Windows, etc. Also bear in mind that the plaster, render, concrete, etc. All use lots of water so just sit tight...

Got a little top of gear this morning - 2 pairs of 25kg comp bumpers, 1 set of fractional plates and 1 again faster 2.0 Team barbell

what is that a pull up bar?

why not join a gym?

also is that a cctv camera?

Yes, it's a pull up bar.

I am a member of a gym, I was a member of 2 until the one next to my work closed. This is to help fill the gap left now I cant workout at lunch time. I just don't have the time to get to the gym every day after work.

Yes it's a Hikvision IP camera, works well.

Hi everyone. Just decided to quit my £60 a month gym membership and set up my own home gym in the garage. Read through pages and pages of this thread and clicked lots of links and now have a good idea for some decent kit.

As a start point, I want to get a good power rack. I want to buy once, but not spend the earth either. Considered the bodymax 475 (actually a dkn power rack which looks the same for £299) and also seen the one on strength shop for £439, and the bodycraft f430 for £429. I like the dkn/cf475 for the price, but cant help but think i will replace it. I like the idea of a straight pull up bar on the bodycraft, but really am lost in a sea of racks! (No jokes please ha ha)

Any others I should consider? And does anyone have any steer as to which would be a good purchase?

I need an Olympic bar and some weights too but I'll scour around for those.

Thanks

I spent an age researching racks and considered the one in your links, read loads of reviews, youtube stuff and in the end decided to go for the Barbarian Line power rack which should be with me in two weeks time as that's when I need it for. But you might not want to spend £750 on a rack. Although check out a few on this page as they also seem to off the off centre cross beam at the back which means not catching your toes when you go to rack and unrack the bar:

Been keeping a good eye on this thread as in the next month or so I'll be moving and will have a 8.5ft x 10.14 spare room downstairs to turn into a gym and obviously wanting to put in as much kit as possible while using a small foot print.

I've settled on the following:

Ironmaster IM2000 self spotting smith - http://www.valleyfitness.co.uk/racks/im2000-smith/im2000.html

In conjunction I'll be getting the Ironmaster super bench as it's the most versatile bench on the market with its various attachments. - http://www.valleyfitness.co.uk/super-bench/super-bench.html

Dumbbell wise i'll be getting these - http://www.fitness-superstore.co.uk/body-power-1-30kg-rubber-hex-dumbbell-set.html to give a nice variety and the ability to dropseat easily compared to bowflex or other changeable dumbbells.

Plate wise I'll be getting the body power rubber tri-grips - http://www.fitness-superstore.co.uk/body-power-185kg-rubber-encased-tri-grip-olympic-set.html and adding a few more lower plates to go with the kit.

Both retailers have already said that a discount is on the cards when I come to buy and I've already specced up a ton of accessories and handles as well as adapters for use with various size barbells for deadlifts, bent over rows etc...

Anyone got any recommendations based on what I'm looking at? Good choices or better for the money?

Thanks,

Andy

I would just go with a regular power rack rather than a smith type machine as they do not allow natural movement patterns when lifting forcing you to lift in a straight line, also by supporting the weight for you won’t strengthen your stabilizing muscles.

It's much more than just a smith machine as it has a pulley system which uses the bar in conjunction.

Also adding these on http://www.valleyfitness.co.uk/racks/im2000-smith/im2000-bar-hooks.html so I can use a free bar if I want to as well.
