*** Official Kodi (née XBMC) Thread ***

I've been using XBMC on my htpc for over a year now and i find it fantastic. It was a bit of a learning curve finding out how to arrange them so they scrape correctly etc, and to get movies grouped into sets but it's well worth the effort i put in. NaviX is a bit hit and miss sometimes, but it has content like nowhere else that's free.

My biggest gripe with XBMC is some of the settings menu. Everything to do with video settings needs to be in one place instead of in different menus. It certainly takes some getting used to navigating around the menu's. It's feels like learning a whole new windows operating system all over again at times.

I'm currently using this which is surprisingly well built and does everything i need including putting the pc to sleep and waking it. The only problem is, it's not backlit and no qwerty keyboard. I have a Wii mini for the keyboard part, but would like to combine the 2.

I'm looking into an all in one remote solution to control the amp, projector and htpc. Because i watch films in the pitch black, it's nice to have a remote with a back light but i want one with a keyboard on as well. Logitech have this which is interesting, i wonder how much it will cost when finally released?

I so wanted this, I ran the RC3 at the weekend and the PVR side is just buggy. I tried Argus TV server , Media portal and Next PVR I got all the guide data but only one channel would work and never changed channel, If anyone has any advise on how best to set this up etc I'm all ears as XBMC with solid PVR support is a Media portal , WMC , Jriver MC Killer..

Logitech's harmony line of remotes can do all that. That looks a very interesting addition to the range.

I've ran into some trouble, for some reason when I imported Banshee into my library, it's automatically in Poster view when it should be in Banner. I tried fixing it by going into the tv show settings but for some reason the banner was the only thing that wasn't saving and going into place. I can manage to edit the poster and fanart fine. I tried doing it for another show but it's doing the same thing. Is this Frodo being buggy?

The final milestone was closed today for Frodo final - so within a few days it should be out - but I've found RC3 very stable :)

You don't need to install XBMC on your server. You can have a centralised MySQL database without it. The reason I've installed XBMC onto my server is so that my end-point machines don't need to do any updates to the library, as my server does this immediately any new media is added. This means that new items are available instantly, rather than having to wait for a client that's just booted up to run through a scan.

What exactly do you want to achieve, easyrider, and we'll help you configure XBMC best :)

@Easy nope all you need a machine capable of running MySQL

I have all the movies etc...on the server and I would like to have all client machines pointing to a server DB rather than updating each individual machine with a DB stored locally on each one.

So if i delete a title from the server \\server\videos the DB updates and reflects this deletion by updating the library on the HTPC's running xbmc in multiple rooms.

Is this possible?

At the moment if I delete a movie off the server after watching it as its crap, I have to manually remove it from each XBMC library on each machine if its scanned the SMB share on booting xbmc

@Easy.. Yes that's the point of having the MySQL database. Basically all the machines ie server and clients are pointing to the same database.... Ie files advancedsettings.xml and sources.xml are the same or similar

I'll post my files when I'm not so mobile, ps the MySQL howto should be a great starting place for you. From memory everything worked by following the instructions except for the database creation... That's probably going to be the one place you'll fail or trip like I did

Following on from Disasters post above, can xbmc differentiate between banners and posters?

I use Ember Media manager to manager all my movies, and it seems to use banners and posters interchangeably which is a bit of a pain when trying to browse using different views as things look squashed.

I believe Frodo (with the Universal Scraper) will download/use both poster and banner.

Not sure what it'll do when there's a 3rd party application downloading stuff?

The banners are updating on my iPad controller but aren't on the actual XBMC screen, it's quite annoying.

Normally shows have only a banner and fanart, I've done this and removed the poster and all that shows up is the "no image selected" picture.

Hi Guys.

Just been given a mac mini from work. Was thinking of using this for xbmc. Is it overkill though. Its all it will be used for. Either that or i give it back and by a PI?

Thanks.

If you've been given it - it's cost you nothing, so why spend your own money on a Pi? (Plus the SD card, power supply, etc needed to actually run it, plus maybe a case) :)

I would guess that a Mac Mini is more powerful than a Pi, so could run the more graphically intensive skins (such as Aeon Nox, my current skin of choice)

A Raspberry Pi does have limitations when used for XBMC - and in knowing and understanding those limitations, you can make an informed decision as to whether it is suitable for your specific uses.

There's a very good post here on the XBMC forum, which goes through a number of these.

I would like a Pi or two - as machines to stick in the kitchen or garage, hooked up to a set of stereo speakers, purely for playing music, and controlled via a mobile. These will not do any video decoding, will have the basic Confluence skin installed - but it'll sit on the main menu screen not doing much after it's been initially configured.

If you've got an AV receiver with HDMI, then the Pi can be used to output audio to it, but not DTS-HD (it'll pass through DTS) or TrueHD (it'll probably give you no sound) and then you'll have some luck with most video formats, even up to 1080p.

But - you couldn't, for example, play back any Hi10p - it's not got any built in decoders, and its CPU is not fast enough.
