*** Official Kodi (née XBMC) Thread ***

supported linux devices.
http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Hardware_Device_Information

if you want hidef you'll need dvb-s2 and dvb-t2 devices.

saving the streams takes very little cpu, playing them back (offset by vaapi or vdpau hardware decoding) or transcoding does.
i have a small ION2 dual core atom machine with a 1TB 2.5" drive, running ubuntu precise, mythbackend and xbmc as the frontend.
it's powerful enough to record multiple streams and playback but not transcoding.

That sounds really cool.. Are the usb2 one not worth the bother then ?

I also take it that when you talk about transcoding that you're trying to rebroadcast the stream to your LAN devices similar to a uPnP/DLNA server (good idea)

i have 2 usb PCTV 290e's (dvb-t2) they work fine.

by transcoding i mean re-encoding to a smaller file size, all the mythfrontends i tried previously on android used transcoding to a more manageable resolution and the cpu just couldn't handle it.
streaming the file just like recording takes very little power.

xbmc for android doesn't do this, SD plays fine but not HD as xbmc doesn't support many hardware decoders in android yet.

I don't see any need to upgrade, certainly not yet. XBMC 11 does everything I need/want.

Same here. In addition to dealing with a beta (notice they are still releasing stability updates so it's not fully stable yet), if you use any number of plugins, they may not yet be updated or even if they have, may be buggy.

Blooming interesting. I'm going to give this a shot with both myth and Tvheadend.

Thing is that it would have been so much simpler if they also acted as DLNA servers

myth is tricky to setup the first time, this guide helped me
http://parker1.co.uk/mythtv_ubuntu.php

myth and xbmc both have upnp servers but playing from them never seemed to work the way i wanted it to, in android i think it was trying to copy the whole file over then play it which would take ages.

That sounds right - and Naked Gun is showing correctly in XBMC. What files are in the Naked Gun 2 folder?

Sorry the naked gun thing was just an example. Having gone into it it seems to be happening with 2 films. One called APT (shows 4 entries) and one called The Express. Neither of which are films on my server.

I've loaded up the context menu (which was new to me!) and whilst the paths for all my films are smb/mediaserver/movies.....

The paths for

"The Express" is /system/library/privateFramework/VoiceServices.Framework/RecognitionResources/Express/...

"APT" is /var/cache/apt/....

I've looked at my source folders and the only 2 sources should are my TV Show and Movies folders on the server. Any ideas?

Any linux users in here have their xbmc box suspend to ram automatically if idle ? When I mean idle I mean when no other processes in the background are active including xbmc itself.

I've installed powernap which is great and works with background processes like torrents, databases etc ... but it doesn't seem to pick up xbmc activity (well more to the point it does but doesn't know when a video is playing)

What are you using to name the files?

Hello,
Can anyone recommend me a receiver that will work with a Harmony One and XBMC running on Windows 8? My “ortek vrc-1100” receiver – which worked fine with Windows 7 will not Pause or Play under Windows 8…I assume it’s a driver problem but I can’t resolve it.

Which movies are they, and how are the files named?
If you get the Universal Scraper plugin, it will find movies that XBMC's native scraper doesn't.

If your movies are on imdb, you can create a very simple text file called movie.nfo, and have it contain something like this:

Code:
<movie>
        <title>Sin City (Recut, Extended, Unrated)</title>
</movie>
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0401792/
With this example, it'll get the info from the imdb page, and use the title listed instead of the one at imdb. All the rest of the data will be taken from imdb.

More info on constructing the nfo file here:

Thanks mate, changed the scraper to the Universal Scraper and nearly all files are showing now. There are only a few that aren't showing e.g. Celebrity Juice: Too Juicy for TV 1.

Thanks again :)

Ended up writing a script last night that does a JSON RPC call and depending on the result keeps powernap active so that the whole machine doesn't sleep

Still trying to source a card but then I stumbled on this which got my heart racing !

Only question remains is whether a low powered android device can run tvheadend.

Maybe a MK808 is up for it instead ? I'm seriously regretting getting into this

Out of interest whats the best way to run xbmc these days? I’ve currently got it running on an Apple TV2, however it's not the quickest, especially when using some of the 3rd party skins. Given the price I could get for it on ebay (£180ish!) I’ve been thinking about buying something like an Acer Revo or a Pulse 8 box (as per the other thread but not sure if it's a little bit big)

I considered one of the many android boxes but I’m not sure how much more powerful it’d be compared to the ATV2. The G Box thing in particular.

Does anyone have any advice. One thing I was always thinking was how do remotes with in terms of powering on these htpc type things? Do you have to manually power them up each time or just leave it in a sleep mode all the time?

I'm also open to building my own but given the price of the options above it doesnt seem worth it!

Do you want to just access the files that are on your laptop, or do you want to store the files on your OpenElec machine?

If the first - create a share on your laptop of the folder where the files are located, then on XBMC go to "Add Source" and browse the network for the files.

If the second... then you'll need to copy the files across somehow - doing that on Linux is not my area of expertise - so I'll leave that to someone else :)

Thanks for the help....

I have decided to go back to Windows Home Server 2011 and setup everything again from there..... Especially as I paid for the license but not using it. Thought OpenElec would be better for me but am going to install Serviio too so that my LG home cinema system and PS3 can use the movies (transcode on the fly).....

Will use Ember Manager noted above and try and organise my movies beforehand.... Bit of leg work but hopefully better in the long run.

each to their own I guess by I've got a E2180, 2gb ram, 6450ati card and about 5 tb of storage in a crappy case in my garage. Excluding the hard drives, cost about £100 all 2nd hand bits.

I use a bluetooth mouse and keyboard and just run the HDMI cable from the pc in the garage to the amp in my main room. No noise (it's in another room) and works great. (doubles as a server/backup box as well)

Try having a look 2nd hand for stuff as you don't need anything powerful to run XBMC. The above streams 1080p and 5.1 sound all via the ati card no problems.

I have it installed in my HP N40l server. I did have OpenElec installed but switched over to Windows again. The 6450 does a great job and I have 2x3TB hard drives and 2x2TB hard drives.... Pretty quiet and right next to the main tv in the living room. Also networked so eventually the movies will show up on my LG home theatre unit in the bedroom once I sort Serviio.

I'm currently running my xbmc from a setup on my Readynas box with 4x2tb running raid 5.

Installed Mysql and imported my library to that, got a PC under the tv with xbmc connecting to the SMB shares which works really well, but haven't yet gotten round to doing anything else around the house, so can't comment on performance.
