*** Official Mass Effect 2 Thread ***

How easy is this game to get into if you have not played the first ?

I got ME1 sitting on Steam (I got a cheap copy from the the xmas sales) But I have been told that ME2 is amazing.

So I am just thinking is it worth me playing through ME1 first and then buy ME2 later down the road or should I just splash out on ME2 ? As I have noticed a lot of people commenting on how much they have improved on in-game mechanics

They're quite different in gameplay.

Without a doubt play through ME1 first. It helps to know what goes on in that game, as well as importing your save. Also, if you start with ME2, I think it may be difficult to get used to the gameplay of ME1.

I'll reserve any opinion on which I prefer until after I've finished the game, though I'm still settling in to the new way of doing things (some things are definitely better, but some features ought to be improved upon for ME3).

I wish you could enter/exit the ship from the door, talk to squadmates directly during missions, take out your weapon in 'safe' places instead of only in 'mission' places. Oh and the Mission complete screen is really cheesy.
Also it would be nice to have separate keys for use, sprint and cover instead of all being spacebar. Adding the ability to crouch would be nice. Finally I miss the squad command 'hold your position'.

Has anyone played an Infiltrator or Vanguard? I can't decide which to go for. I tried playing an adept but it just wasn't fun, the enemy regeneration rate on Insanity mode is ridiculous, so I'll come back to the adept, but I want something with a bit more punch, I like sniper rifles and haven't used the shotgun much, but it's the powers I'm more interested in.

I've been playing as the vangaurd, enjoying the class so far. Have a few special ammo powers, pull, shockwave and my favourite charge. (he propels himself at the enemy and it stuns them/knocks them back)

AHAHAHAHAHA go to the Citadel, it's hilarious.

Bumped into the guy who was trying to get a refund in the Wards back in ME1, and the couple who you helped decide whether their baby should get routine genetic engineering. After arguing the guy says 'I know, lets ask random passers by'.

Then there's the advert for the Elcor product of Hamlet, the Asari/Turian couple bickering and the fact that every store says 'I'm commander Shephard, and this is my favourite store on the Citadel' when I walk in :D

The game has so many awesome little additions, on Illium over the speakers you here an advert for a Hanar reproduction of Dirty Harry.

"This one has forgotten if it's heatsink is over capacity, it wonders if the criminal scum considers itself fortunate".

"This one doesn't have time for your solid waste excretions"

"Enkindle THIS!"

^ nice. I think that was inspired by a post one of the writers put on the official boards, when people were speculating on who would be in your party, he came up with the Hanar Spectre.

In other news, go speak to the games shop in the Citadel. The clerk's addicted to solitaire :D

Heh I started a vanguard and its fun, but I keep getting myself into trouble by using charge. Apparently charging from a balcony through a few walls and over a barricade isn't a problem!

On the subject of Hanar, that bit when Zaeed says he was strangled by a hanar made me laugh. :p

I so want a hanar squad member in ME3.

Just noticed your sound card, I too have the X-Fi Gamer, maybe its an issue with that..

I had the same problem in the first Mass Effect

Make sure your speaker configuration is matching between the windows control panel and the creative audio console - it allows you to change them differently for CMSS-3D effects but if CMSS isn't on it can have odd effects. Also make sure your in game mode in the creative control panel.

Also might wanna make sure "what you can hear" isn't selected as the recording device, etc.

Anyone heard about those "nasty Hanar & Asari" extranet vids?

So far i've noticed Michael Dorn, Claudia Black, Carrie-Anne Moss and Armin Shimerman (Quark from DS9.)

Loving every second of this game!

The attention to detail is staggering in this game. So many 'pop-culture' references too.

I won't spoil the surprise, but take a quick jump to the Sol system and probe the outer planets of our system ;)

I'm playing Infiltrator, continuing my sheshep from ME1. Trying to go for a lessie romance with whoever will take me.

Weapons:
The sniper rifle is a lot more stable (they don't seem to move at all in scoped mode) but the ammo for them is ridiculous. You get 10 shots. Each clip you pick up for it is 1 shot. I only use it for special occasions at the moment.

I'm mainly using the machine pistol thing at the moment, as the regular pistol (which is more powerful) also has a stupid ammo amount.

Powers:
Haven't found the powers to be anything like the ones from ME1 so far. :(
Haven't got any of the sabotage (disable shield and overheat weapon) powers, just got a "lob a ball of fire" one at the moment. Not sure if the sabotage ones are even in ME2 anymore. Hopefully I've just got unlocked them yet.
You also get a "cloak" power, which is just poo from what I've found so far.

Who does Dwight Schultz voice? He was in the first game too but I couldnt identify him at all

Plus the cook on the Normandy seems familiar but I can't place him either

The guy who voices the C-Sec officer in the wards on the citadel is Michael Hogan... Saul Tigh from Battlestar Galactica for fraks sake!

EDIs voice is also voiced by the actor who played Caprica Six (well... all the sixes) in the same series.

I must admit hearing Hogan made me smile, the way he annouciates things is fantastic. With all these fairly popular and succesful sci fi actors doing voiceovers for the game I do wonder what their budget was for this aspect of production! I'm glad that they took it so seriously, good voice acting is centric to a game like this.
