**** Official Microsoft Flight Simulator Thread ****

So is there any news as to whether or not they adding a true supersonic flight model with the Top Gun stuff, or is it just going to be **** like all the current supersonic capable aircraft?

Anyone else having issues with world loading? I have a go in Tokyo and I get to parts of the city where the ground is just blurry 2d image, no 3d buildings loaded, checked and photo geometry is enabled, Bing maps is enabled, ensured everything is updated in the marketplace too.

I had that issue yesterday evening. Wasn't even a photogramm city area, quite rural and landscape still wasn't loading in properly. Must have been a Microsoft server/ data issue???

Has anyone got the Airbus Officers pack? (Stick & Throttle)? Looking for some feedback on it.
I'm looking to downsize from the Warthog HOTAS/Stick I've got as it just takes up so much room on the desk and the Airbus looks a smaller more compact unit; but it is any good?

Got all of it plus an extra throttle (ready for the 380NX end of the year)

Really happy with it, only using the single throttle setup atm as there's calibration issues using all 4 so waiting for Asobo/FBW to sort that out with the 38NX

The bravo is in stock on a competitor website, just searching the bravo it came on Google had it come up. Won't last long. I picked one up earlier in the week from a diff website, so they are all restocking right now

I downloaded the freeware H135 helicopter yesterday and gave it a quick spin (no pun intended).
As it's free, it's a bit hard to complain. Having said that, the flight model is clearly mega simplistic, with no torque effect. Didn't tree to see if I could induce VRS. The interior is "ok". Certainly not as polished as some of the stock aircraft.
Xplane and DCS clearly don't need to worry just yet.

What I couldn't help but notice was just what a mess low level textures are. I overflew a car-park and all the cars and buildings looked like they'd been melted by a ray gun.
Is there anything expected on the horizon that might fix that?

Probably unlikely; some areas have better photogrammetry and graphics than others; I'm sure we'll see more optimisation of their engine and how it interprets the map data but I wouldn't expect anything soon.
For anything you really want detailed scenery for either buy it (if available) or look for free add-ons.

No helo and no supersonic flight models are the two main reasons why I haven't bought this, and I've owned nigh on every MSFS since 5.0. Another reason, like you alluded to, is the crappy scenery/textures. I like flying helos down low, NoE at times, and the rubbish scenery/textures just ruin the whole experience.

Don't really understand how anyone could think the scenery/textures in MSFS are rubbish.....they're a completely different level of fidelity than any microsoft sim before and better than even ortho4xp in most circumstances. The autogenerated scenery is unlike anything else before and honestly incredible down low.

The 'photogrammetry' on the other hand, is pretty rubbish. Of course there aren't that many photogrammetry cities, you don't actually have to have it turned on and most likely you can use the SDK and a freeware tool to import the google version, which is much better. Lots of people still seem to get the the bing satellite imagery and photogrammetry buildings mixed up.

I would stick with the Warthog, tbh. Cool having a scaled down replica of the airbus controls, if that's what you fly, but the quality isn't compatible. I'm on my third replacement quadrant inside a year and the joystick is starting to wear now too. Have ordered an airbus grip for the warthog.

There's definitely torque, you didn't have the flight model on simple (xbox) did you? You will want L3: Advanced. You can change it on the flip out tablet on the side... the level 1 model is made to make it easy to just pootle around with an xbox controller, and I wouldn't bother with intermediate, just go straight to advanced.

It is a bit of a low fidelity interior, but as you say can't really complain when it's free... I believe they have mostly moved on to their payware H145 which will no doubt see more polish, not sure if we will see any major further improvements to the H135.

I think there is currently some bug with texture streaming.[KNOWN ISSUE] Bing data streaming - Community / News and Announcements - Microsoft Flight Simulator Forums

Thanks for that. I fly pretty much all the time in VR, and as the in-cockpit zoom doesn't seem to work with the H135, I'd missed the "advanced" flight model.
As you say, that made a huge difference. It's still rather synthetic, as though it's got a lot of fly by wire in the loop. All the same, it does feel MUCH better.

I tried inducing VRS, but couldn't manage that. Hopefully to be added later.

Whilst I've been somewhat critical, the key point is that I still enjoyed flying it (choppers are what got me started in DCS), and as it's free, it really is an utter no-brainer
I can see the H135 being my normal "go to" with FS for the immediate future.

Outside of RC I've never flown helicopters (well apart from a half hour trial lesson in an R44 my wife bought me a few years ago!), so I'm not exactly an authority but the H135 did strike me as quite easy to fly.... that said, it is an Airbus heli, and they are known for making "robotic" type aircraft and I'm no expert in the systems on their helicopters.

VRS definitely appears to register, it creates a stall event in the sim which plays through my shakers... Doesn't have a huge effect on the heli from what I've seen other than needing a bit more power but the 135 again is pretty overpowered at low alts so not sure how susceptible it is to it in reality either...

The Fly Inside bell is supposed to be a pretty damn good flight model, and of course no modern technology in the control loop, but I haven't tried it yet.

Thanks again for that.
I took a scan at the info on the Bell last night. I'd rather have something a little newer, so will wait to see if we get a Huey, 412 or similar.
Not sure on the VRS in the H135. In DCS, VRS is massively more pronounced in their helicopters. So I don't know if that's a limitation with the flight model of the H135, or if it has a LOT better power to weight ratio (possible).

    Offscreen Terrain Pre-Caching
“Offscreen terrain caching” is now available on PC. This option defines what level of detail your offscreen terrain will stream into memory. This is located in General Options > Graphics.

The definition of “Off screen terrain” is anything not currently visible behind the user.

Question from the community: “If set to Ultra, all the offscreen terrain will be cached at full quality - does this include buildings and trees in addition to ground terrain?” Yes, this includes not only terrain but buildings, trees, photogrammetry, textures, and everything else in the world.

    It will have four settings:
    • Low - This setting will improve performance but a lot of terrain data is streamed at a lower quality behind the user, while FPS drops may increase when turning your head.
    • Medium - This is what you currently have right now in the current build. The terrain behind the user is streamed at a lower quality and reduces the impact on memory and FPS, but when turning your head will need to stream the terrain and FPS drops may occur in that moment.
    • High - High will be an intermediate state between Medium and Ultra
    • Ultra - This is will have no offscreen caching at all, and everything will be maxed out based on your graphics setting. The quality in front of the user is the same as from behind the user, so nothing needs to be loaded. This could come with some FPS drops when turning the head, but would result in higher FPS and lower memory usage when looking forward and not turning your head quickly.

    Safe Mode
Learn all about “Safe Mode” here: https://flightsimulator.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/4405893759378 28

    Release Note Details
    • SR22 performance and fuel consumption has been modified to better match POH: SR22 was flying 4% too slow (max speed 2000ft) and had a 10% too low fuel consumption.

    • Better management of low bandwidth Bing terrain data and photogrammetry streaming as the change to Offline data is no longer persistent (changes applied only affect the current flight): In a low bandwidth scenario, a pop-up is displayed informing the user that they should turn off Bing terrain data and photogrammetry. Turning it off at this moment was a persistent change which lead to some users playing in offline mode without knowing it. The switch to offline data is no longer persistent starting with this update.

    • Content user rating is now more accurate: A bug was found that did not register every rating and capped at a certain amount. This is now fixed and all ratings from users will be accounted for.
