**** Official Microsoft Flight Simulator Thread ****

Managed to complete the Courchevel challenge at 3rd attempt after fumbling learning view keys.

Managed to slide it in at rank 83 i believe but cant see how to review your score tbh.

Had some great fun tonight!

Got plenty of hours in the alpha of the game, but the release version is quite different in many respects, and no more watermarks all over the screen is bliss lol.

Online is really busy and working nicely. Found my step-dad online and eventually caught up to him after flying around London. Done a couple of low and slow VFR flights. This game is beyond amazing!

Performance for me is really good. 3900x, GTX1080, 32GB, 1440p at high settings and I do t think it dipped below 30fps even in London with a ton of players flying around too. Once in the air and away from dense scenery it's an easy 50-60fps and the sim feels incredibly smooth.

All I can say is I absolutely cannot wait for VR with the G2 I have on pre-order. Its going to be something else in high quality VR.

Looking forward to the PMDG 737 too :)

But I've had a faultless experience, about 9 hours of downloading with no hiccups, straight into the sim. Configured my controllers to what I'm used to and away I went.

Folks how do you know which version of FS you have installed, is there anywhere in the game that says you have the Standard or Deluxe version etc?

What a game, not played a flight sim since I was about 13, tonight I've had the most wonderful time. First time flight from East Mids to Newcastle, managed to land OK just got lost taxiing LOL. This was in the Airbus A320, it was a night flight and went fairly smoothly, I am letting the AI handle the air traffic control at the moment. Second flight was from Orlando to New York, flying past and round the statue of liberty and empire state building etc, this was in the little Icon A5.

I am running the game on 'high end' settings and it is truly incredible, probably one of the best looking games ever if not of all time?

So far it's superb I love it, can't wait to learn more and fly to new places.

Are you using a yoke? My graphics I wouldn't say are incredible mmmm...I have a lesser graphics card dont I. :(

Im new to sims so maybe im doing something wrong ?

I was reading about navigation and came across VOR

In the Cessna 152 i punched in a freq and it seemed to pick up the morse code, I clicked nav 1 button but the cdi/obs dial doesnt move ?
User error or has it been implemented in this plane?

I think graphics and fps are very subjective. It would probably help if we all used one benchmark/area of the game to indicate performance. E.g. the first flight lesson?

You need to change the direction of the compass of the obs, so for example of you are directly north of the beacon the needle will aline when you move the compass to either 360 or 180 depending on whether you want to go towards or away from the vor station.

This is a bit old and is based on FSX but its a good guide

For some god dam reason my game crashed and now I have loaded it back up all the menus are in Spanish, could someone point me to the page that has language settings please?

Edit: it's ok I have solved the issue.

I'm still getting the odd CTD but wow this game looks soooo good and I'm.not sure about comments on performance although I've been flying over the skies of Essex rather then over large cities

But in medium 1080p with AA it runs better than FSX and XP ever did for me and this is with a lowly [email protected]/16gb RAM and an overclocked 290. So what's that a 8 year old mobo/CPU and 6 year old GPU lol !! It even was fine when taking video capture in background

On a side note I can't believe after 6 (!!) years how well the 290 does on current gen games

Certainly suggests the main thread is getting saturated and it isn’t doing a good enough job of distributing load across available cores.... But that wouldn’t explain why you are getting half the FPS that I do on a 3900X. Your single thread perf should be roughly equal to mine.

Have you changed any other settings beyond the “high end” default?

What are your ram and infinity fabric settings?

When they move to dx12 (why the hell they developed on dx11 is beyond me) it should improve CPU perf substantially imo.

Edit - just had a thought (ouch). You in windows ver2004? Try enabling hardware accelerated GPU scheduling to move some load off the CPU.

I've tried lowering the settings to the lowest and the framerates are virtually identical. Dropped the resolution down to 1920x1080 and still the same. Starting to think it must just be a software bug - a lot of other people seem to be having the same problem with high spec PCs. Lot of Ryzens! Says my CPU usage is 16% :p

I feel like I'm one of the lucky ones at the moment! Downloaded and installed fine, set the graphics to the suggested 'high end' preset and it's been fine.

Running a ryzen 4800 and a 5600m, 16gb ram and it runs pretty well. A few big fps dips in very populated areas but nothing making the experience feel bad.

The terrain generation is hilarious though. The river near me which is about 8ft wide in real life must be 100ft wide in the game. It also seems to love to generate a running track where there isn't one.

No idea about others but there’s a default for the thrustmaster warthog HOTAS.

Not a HOTAS, but my 17 year old Logitech Extreme 3D Pro joystick has mapped automatically. Even has a graphic of the actual stick showing the button numbers, and the onscreen prompts all sync up nicely. Shame it’s not the same for others, but they’ve done a great job with this stick.

^^ same for X52 Pro the graphic of joystick helped me.find button 18 and 19 etc lol

My CPU seems to sit at under 40% sometimes 60 but I suspect as GPU limited with my 290

Sure feels so much smoother than XP10 which ran terribly on my 290 (opengl) and FSX which had loads of annoying micro stutters

I also have this problem. Neither CPU or GPU is utilised to 100%. Both around 50-60%. 7700k and Vega 56, both stock. Have to play on High even with the apparent headroom suggesting I could go Ultra. Luckily it’s still managing 60fps at 1080p.

Edit: Also system RAM usage is 9GB / 16GB and GPU memory is 6GB / 8GB so it’s not those. Game is installed on the same SSD as the OS fwiw.

Vram is a issue for most people. Am seeing 7.9gb vram usage out of 8gb. Also internet speeds if poor will cause stutters as it downloads the map data. Places line Seattle are around 10GB worth of data that it’s trying to download when you spawn in

The caching feature will come in very handy for this kind of situation. I can see me getting a 1TB SSD just for this purpose.

Couple of questions - does the graphics streaming begin when you click "ready to fly", or does it begin on the screen before?

On the Cessna 152 - does it have instrument lighting? All I could find was the spotlight thing which is way too bright to use at night. There is a wheel for glareshield brightness but it doesn't seem to do anything!

@twoodster the CPU overall usage is largely irrelevant though if a single thread is hitting 100%... The rest of the CPU could be sitting relatively unused but you’ll still be limited by that one thread. If you’re interested then have a look at what all threads are actually doing, not just the average usage.

As above try enabling hardware GPU scheduling acceleration. It will move some load on to your GPU from the CPU... it’s a new windows feature in the latest update.

If you haven’t tweaked your ram and infinity fabric settings using something like DRAM calculator for ryzen then you are also leaving potentially quite a lot of performance on the table.

This isn't true at all - I did a flight from Seattle to Vancouver last night and my data total went from 1.5GB (after 4 hours of flying) to 2.5GB. So it's 1GB at most and that's two major metropolitan areas.

Having to download 10GB would make the game unplayable for even those with faster internet speeds (I'm on 40Mb).
