Despite their being good games on the Wii and Wii U, the GC was, imho, the last decent Nintendo console. There was some 3rd party support and some high quality, original, first party stuff.
I didn't even have a GameCube (my dad hated video games and wouldn't let me have one) growing up, but even I know how great it was. It was the very system that got me into video games. I'd played PS1, Gameboy, a little PS2 and few other things before it, but they just didn't appeal to the child me. Then came along Smash Bros on Gamecube and I finally realised that video games were actually a thing.
All those talking about Star Fox Zero, I really wanted it to be an amazing game. But with Nintendo's pricing (it'll probably never be on sale) and the lack of control options, it's unlikely I'll ever pick it up to try it out for myself. Sure you could argue that people didn't give it a fair go, but then people don't give many other good games a fair go. Monster Hunter is hard to get into, but once you're in, it's amazing (ala Dark Souls). I know a lot of folks who didn't give that a fair go. And despite several hundred hours enjoying 3DS Monster Hunter (plenty of time to get used to the controls), I'm adamant that the controls of 3DS Monster Hunter are still terrible.
Funny thing is that me and my brother played Star Fox Assault (GC) multiplayer the other day. I was telling him how it the Gamecubes equivalent to Halo. It was good fun and reminded me of how awesome things could be when they kept it simple. None of that exists in Star Fox Zero, no proper multiplayer at all. I thought Nintendo was the last bastion of hope for local/splitscreen multiplayer, but some of their games recently have been launching without it (like Mario Maker). It seems splitscreen really is on it's way out
On the one hand, I think the NX being delayed is a good thing. On the other hand, the Zelda delay to have a simultaneous multiplatform launch is not appreciated. Folks will likely buy up the NX version and ignore the WiiU version. It might have had a chance if they released the WiiU version seperately and sooner. Star Fox Zero got delayed and look at what improvements it got. I'm no longer confident that delays will always make a game better now. If they are only really going to show Zelda at E3 this year... count me disappointed for the 3rd year in a row. The NX better work some miracles to make up for it.
Apologies for the cynicism, but it's also crept into every aspect of my life right now too.
