Marks out of 10 for the console and ZombieU if you have it
I bought the ZombiU pack and it's great value. I'm really glad I forked out that extra £35 over a Basic with Mario, as you get the black console (which goes better with my media set-up), the sensor bar, a Controller Pro, the console stand and a GamePad stand which doubles as a charger; all that for £35 is easily worth it considering the controller alone costs that much to buy.
I've put a few hours into ZombiU now and I really don't understand how this game got mediocre reviews as personally I think it's a very good survival horror game. I think they did a great job showing off London in a post-apocalyptic environment. Graphically the game is very good and I was immediately impressed with the lighting which is important to a game like this.
The controls are good, but clunky, however I found it to be a good thing. Some reviewers did comment on the controls being clunky and made it out to be a negative but really I don't find doing a power-slide under a fence then immediately getting up and doing a backflip over a toppled over Coca Cola machine whilst holding a cricket bat to be very realistic. Instead, your guy (or girl!) has to crawl under the fence, or pulls themself over the downed Coca Cola machine which in my opinion is how it should be.
I'm finding the GamePad integration to be really well done. At first I though it might just be a gimmick to show off how the GamePad can work for Wii U games but, whilst it does do that, it also fits the game very well and helps with the atmosphere. As an example, when you loot a dumpster your GamePad will show the dumpsters items and also your inventory whilst the game moved into a third person view and you can see a little of the area around you. So you end up having to look at the GamePad for the items, then look at the screen to make sure a Zombie isn't going to chew your nuts off, then back to the inventory. It's how it should be, as realistically you can't keep your eyes on everything.
The only downside so far I've found is when using a melee weapon (like a cricket bat) it's really hard to judge the distance between you and a the Zombies head you're trying to cave in - leading to some missed swings.
The atmosphere of the game is great. I'm constantly taking things slowly as I don't know what's around the next corner, or opening a door into a dark room with my cricket bat at the ready and poking my head around the corner to see if there's anything there. Maybe it's low scores were because it's a love / hate kind of game, not everyone likes the survival horror genre. If you're into zombies and survival horrors it's a really good game, don't get put off by the mediocre reviews.
