What I love and hate about this game is how quickly you can go from being in a great position to fighting tooth and nail for even a draw and vice versa.

:)

One thing I have noticed so far is that start / mid-game people are generally good.. but I have converted / am converting three or four games now where I was down mid-game and am now in a stronger position end game..

On another point! I seem to keep getting black and queens gambit / variations seems to be the standard white opening.. am thinking of using the Budapest Gambit as a counter.. any of you regular Queens Gambit players come across this.. used to be a relatively rare black opening back in the day

I frequently come across the Budapest Gambit in blitz chess, quite strong for black when you don't have a huge amount of time to think. I wouldn't play it in correspondence chess though, I think it is positionally suspect.

any recommendations for black then.. might try the look like a beginner approach and play something like Hippopotamus :)

LOL :D

It really depends on your style. I play the Nimzo Indian and Queen's Indian most often, the Slav occasionally and sometimes the King's Indian, although I don't know it well enough for black and need to study.

How about the Benoni?

To be fair I guess for correspondence chess you want to get to the mid - end game equal as black where skill rather than knowing the exact openings and counters counts for more.. Games I am losing will lose at the moment are down to be rusty on the openings and giving up position..

That said I do like to play aggressively where possible.. what I dis-like about a King's Indian is the amount of control you give up to white... that said say playing something like Samisch that you can possible convert to Benoni Defence might be a little more confusing for the standard Queen's Gambit players, where a passive-ish black defence turns into something more aggressive and active

I am using the Budapest in a game against Nix at the moment strangely enough.

Maustin, are you finding the in-game comments helpful? I'm sure Playtpus et al. will also be happy to do the same if you wish.

Yes very much so - I am gathering from your notes now that it can be a kind of race to develop all your pieces and so when I make pawn moves too many times I am just giving you the chance to set up an attack unanswered.

That's it. And this is even more crucial when you're playing as black because you're already a tempo behind white. Rather than dictating the game, you're responding.
