Noob question but when someone's pawns are all supporting each other to form a diagonal line is that line pointing normally in the way that player will attack or will get his best attack. i.e if they are all pointing to your kingside and his bishops are doing the same it may therefore be best to castle queenside?

Which game is it? Pawn structures are usually weakest at their base. Castling Queenside may provide absolutely no benefits if your pawns are active and not protecting the king. If your pawns are pointing say bottom-left to top-right in a diagonal (e.g. A2-F6), the lines of attack would usually be on Black's kingside as you can use the pawn-line as an offensive shield.

Couple questions for the experienced chess players on here:

How do you get better at playing the endgame ?

Do you focus on getting the king castled as soon as possible into a game or focus on keeping an attacking tempo regardless?

What opening do you use in most of your games?

Combination of books and games. You don't often get to play end games in a way that is good for learning, so books are very important for this stage. Oh and chess mentor on chess.com.

Depends on various factors; openings used, style of opponent, in some openings castling isn't important.

What opening do you use in most of your games?
Again depends, but I favour e4 as white/Caro-Kann/Sicilian for black.

study - it can be hard/boring. that's why I have done very little. best advice is to study rook + pawn endgames for most benefit, least effort (and lookup lucena) . I learnt knight + bishop mate just for fun :o

Instructional videos can be very useful, as well as Chessmaster which has loads of end game training.

Knowledge of basic tactics such as square of the pawn, building a bridge, having the opposition etc all need to be learned.

It all depends on the type of opening and structure of both the pawns and pieces. In some circumstances, you may need to wait to avoid a fairly decisive attack. Knowledge of when to castle comes with practice.

What opening do you use in most of your games?

GM's recommend that you play a particular opening and stick to it for at least a year to discover it's various nuances.

Ultimately, it depends on your style.

Am happy to play again if you like, drop a challenge...

Have to say I am really loving the chess glad I came across the site.. just wish my opponents in the tournament matches we have with other teams would make a move!!

I think I've got nearly 20 games going at once now. It's taking me forever to get through them all! :p

Yer I am mixing them all up now and making crazy new plans which get me killed even quicker! Good fun! Think I might reduce the amount of games I play at once it does get a bit confusing.

How about the Benoni?

I’d say one of the most famous Benoni games was the 3rd game played between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky in Iceland in 1972. Fischer lost the first game as black (Nimzo-Indian) and lost the second game by default by not turning up and thereby went down 0-2. Fischer won the 3rd game (as black) and pulled back to 1-2.

In those days the matches were shown on Television.

Lost as black against the Maadi lovers but noticed the bloke I am playing always plays the same moves as black to d4 and e4 so I am going for c4 and seeing if I can move him away from his knowledge ... well that's the plan anyway!
