****Official OcUK Fury X Review Thread****

Haven't really been following this thread but thought I would post up my experience with Fury X.
Purchased one on launch day (not from here, no way was I going to pay the £650 they wanted)
Received it and installed in my PC yesterday (Friday 26th)
Today, this morning I have emailed the retailer telling them I wish to return it for a refund.

There is one major reason I cannot keep this card and that is the noise. It makes a horrible high pitched screeching sound constantly. My ears are very sensitive to any high pitched noises so this was extremely irritating for me. Now I have read that the retail cards were meant to have had this problem fixed so maybe I just got unlucky but that's not a chance I'm willing to take again so have now gone back to my GTX 970 for the time being.

Just in case you're wondering I did try to game on it yesterday evening but the noise completely ruined the experience for me. As I mentioned above I am very sensitive to this kind of noise so it may be a non issue for other people.

Edit: for anyone wondering what sort of noise it is producing take a look at this video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKoNa1OXnQA

I think AMD have done a good job with the Fury X, ~same performance as a 980Ti, same price and first to market with HBM. Obviously to hit the price point and performance of the 980Ti more than 4GB HBM wasn't an option.

Its an architectural limit - no money in the world could have put 8GB of HBM1 on any card. 4GB is the hard limit with HBM1

high pitch sound can be anoying and rma/refund is normal in such cases.

Ah ok, my bad assumption, thanks.

It was a perfectly reasonable assumption though as it isn't a hard limit like he suggests. HBM 1 limitation is with 1gb per single stack, there isn't a limit on how many stacks can be fit on one GPU, only limited by the overal GPU die and size of the interposer. Just because AMD weren't able to adapt a larger interposer doesn't mean someone else couldn't or it won't be possible soon ;).

It is unlikely it will happen on HBM1 but it's not a hard limit of the technology itself

Why won't you risk getting a replacement? It's not exactly a drastic move to make.

Seems like a bit of an over reaction to completely change your mind on a product because received a dodgy one. If it was broke completely on receipt would you have replaced it or got a refund the same way?

Sorry Matt, I like your presence in these forums, but I'm not sure you can be objective about Fury X.

To be clear I like AMD and have had many great AMD cards, if I look back on what I think was the best card I have purchased in the last 10 years I would choose the 5870.

I think AMD have done a good job with the Fury X, ~same performance as a 980Ti, same price, far quieter and first to market with HBM. Obviously to hit the price point and performance of the 980Ti more than 4GB HBM wasn't an option.

Many titles will run fine at 4k on 1 or more Fury X, some titles won't. I've only looked at W3 and GTA5 vram usage personally, and I suspect they are at the top end, but GTA 5 right now is a problem for >1 Fury X with respect to vram.

What i can do is tell you the truth about what I'm seeing, I'll leave it up to you whether you think I'm being objective or not.

Can confirm Dying Light is fine at 4K in FuryX CrossFire too, absolutely no issues with Video Memory. This was running 4K with maximum settings but Nvidia GW effects disabled. Draw distance (the VMEM hog) was maxxed out too. So if it's fine at 4K, i can only assume (will test and screenshot later) it's fine at 1440P as well.

It's sad to see misinformation being posted looking at the past couple of pages.

Guys, in realistic terms how much more performance will I get with a Fury X over my two 7950s clocked to the nutts?

I think in maybe a month or two when prices drop a bit if they do ill be upgrading, 500 quid for a gpu its far too much in my eyes.

Im guessing it will be like having another 7950 and a bit more in my system, not quite double the performance of what I have now?

But also id be getting one for the AIO cooler and quietness tho my gpus I have set really low fan speeds due to excellent cooling, its still... too noisy for me :p must be getting old.

About 20%, with the FuryX at stock.

However you'll be getting silence, temps in the low 50's and a smoother experience. :)

I would be more inclined to believe independent reviews than an AMD rep to be honest :p

Personally nowadays I cant trust review sites.
I game so much differently none of that applies to my use.

I can see a problem in GTA V with every slider maxed out, but you'll need three or four gpu's to get anything close to playable fps at 4K, so it's not that important. Two can drive near maximum settings (lacking grunt for higher) without much issue at all.

What cost me 5.5GB of video memory on my 290X 8GB cards cost me about 3.7GB on the FuryX.

Ha

He cant lie. If he does he is out that is the difference.
Kitguru, techreport, pcper, hardocp they can do whatever they want none going to fire them.

You know most dont understand that RAM difference in tech I mean 4gb is 4GB right? (some other brand not so much but I digress)
Optimization of the games with Fury will be interesting to follow especially with 8gb HBM2 later next year comes along.

Waiting for Fury 2 the 14 to decide what to buy.

 only 20%? I actually thought it was a lot higher.

Well, I guess ill be waiting for the r9 400s then, definitely not forking out 500 quid for 20%.

I actually thought id be getting performance like, just over half as much again on top of what I had.

It doesn't matter what an AMD Rep says...the fury x is late to the table. Offers nothing over tech that's been on our shelves for months for the same cost.

It's a dull release ...that's the bottom line..for tech to move forward stuff has to be faster or what's the point?

Yeah but Matt is probably taking into account of how high your 7950's are clocked!! And considering the Fury X only clocks a tad at the moment then it's only sensible

Ha

of course matt looks at the fury with rose tinted glasses and its his job to promote amd, but im sure hes not daft enough to come here and lie about performance knowing he will be found out sooner or later as im sure kapp and boomstick will deny or backup any performance claims

The point is its faster, quieter and smaller than there previous single GPU.
