*** Official OcUK Minecraft Server - Discussion and Rules ***

Server is now up!

* New 1.8 map, which can be accessed by heading to the Pantheon. THIS MAP MAY (read: probably will) BE WIPED WHEN 1.9/etc COME OUT.

* Old 1.7.x world access restored, along with the nether and people's chests.

* Homes have been reset due to having to change home plugins :( However, you can now use multiple homes. Admins will help you teleport to your old homes if you catch one of us online. The new command to set your home is /sethome.

I'm sure it will be a 1.8.2 release with some minor fixes - maybe a taste of some of the new content.

Releasing 1.9 so soon after 1.8 just wouldn't make sense - they would just have waited a week to go straight to the content in 1.9.

If you're right nutty we may be able to get away with just a Nether reset for 1.9 I guess. The 1.8 generated overworld will hopefully be small enough that people will be able to see the new biomes relatively easily.

We'll do a 1.9 pre-release today, and a full release after feedback. More Adventure Mode content will come in 1.10, we're splitting it up!

^notch's twitter, by the way.

Awesome. I'll expect the server playerbase to die again for a week or two and then for Bukkit to take another week to update :/

The idea of starting fresh is to level the playing field for all the new players. In addition to this, each time we don't wipe the map we either have to support an additional world (to allow access to the new features) or simply say "okay then, we won't have that shiny new content".

It has been discussed to death in previous posts in this very thread so my advice would be to read back through it. I don't want to sound rude but I guess I'm a bit tired of the circular discussions.

Yes I know I don't really have the right, but I feel I must demand some notification this time around.

I have moved a lot of stuff from 1.7 to 1.8 and will be mortified if I lose it...well unless retail happens the week after next (which it looks like it might at this rate).

To reiterate, please give us notice so we can move our stuff back to 1.7 (providing we have a map wipe)

As things stand at the moment I don't see the need to wipe 1.8. People can just explore further afield when we go to 1.9 and the new biomes will be generated.

If this is wrong I'll have to re-evaluate it.

edit: I'll promise to give at least 48 hours notice if we do decide we have to wipe the 1.8 map. Just to reiterate though, wiping everything once retail hits is still the current plan (nothing is set in stone of course).

Why are you tiredd of circular discussions? Discussions of that nature indicate disagreement, surely this should be resolved. Also it would have been more logical to have had a discussion thread seperate from this one as it is difficult to keep track of the thread of a discussion in a long winding forum thread.

And you don't sound rude at all FT, I am extremely grateful for all the work you do in hosting the server and all the admins too. I'm only asking for more discussion because as it stands I'm feeling somewhat stranded in terms of what to do with MC currently.

Its not like we don't have time to discuss these things as retail is approximately 2 months away. The finality of decisions that have been made seems somewhat premature.

The conclusion I've reached is that there is no way to keep everyone happy -especially without a huge amount of work overhead for the admins.

By all means feel free to start a discussion on LinkTart about it and I'm sure players will be happy to comment/discuss further. As an admin I would be happy to look at the discussions but being expected to comment on every single idea would be a bit much. As long as you understand that. I'm not saying "oh no, no discussions allowed and no decisions can be reversed".

:D

Of course, on 1.9 release we'll discover that there's a bug where a player with that setting somehow deletes the server world upon death.

anyone got any advise?
I'm running a server and it keeps crashing when anyone joins
I've tried copying the World details to a new PC but it does the same thing there.
Java starts using more and more ram then crashes and gives the error
"java.net.sockettimeoutexception read timed out"
if I run the server from the .jar file in a command prompt it spews stuff about chunks being in the wrong place etc.
ideas?

Try backing up your map files and then generating a new one.

Are you using Bukkit? Could be caused by one of the plugins.

not using bukkit
works fine with new map
:(
is there a map repair tool?

Try loading the map up in mcedit. Sometimes you can repair it with that.

You also may be able to work out which particular chunk/region is causing the issue by reading up on the logs (read up on converting coordinates to chunks/regions). If you can work that out you can just delete the offending region/chunk and you'll be good to go with minimal losses.

I'm guessing it's all those red blocks etc that show up in MCEDIT.
it's finally loaded in MCEDIT but there is loads missing and bits in red?

I'd just ignore mcedit and go back to the deleting chunk/region data method. You may want to post in the standard minecraft thread about it too as it's more likely that someone like Sylvet/hegemon would see it over there and he knows his stuff.
