I'd only really be in favour of mods that use Spout/Spoutcraft. Spout is built to make everything like this far more user-friendly.

How does that work again? I seem to recall that it calculated it in some way rather than giving you "x-ray vision"?
We would have to require that the players use a custom client that would then have to be updated by us each time there's an update to MC. It would be a nightmare tbh.
Possibly a spout mod could do it but I'm not sure it's worth the hassle. Especially as my java skills are awful 
The ore one sounds a bit dodgy to be honest. Assuming the minimap hasn't changed since I used it I don't have a problem with it though.

FT, I just checked my Paypal account to see if the donation went through and the transaction is listed as 'Cancelled'

Ah, you should be able to get further than that. I don't think I can put awesome rewards in for wave 3
You can also win gold tools, iron/gold ore and at high levels diamonds.

Assuming you're wanting to build on the 1.7 map (1.8 is better in some ways, but less hassle for when the new version of MC comes out)....

Grab one of the balloon stations and then head to the bottom left station. There's lots of untouched land around there.
