*** Official OcUK Minecraft Server - Discussion and Rules ***

FT I've seen a server like this before, does work but I think we give too much weight to many past builds and not enough to current players. Frankly I've never cared about losing my builds, this is a free server - you make no promises on continued access to the same builds. All I'm keen on is a "we'll have this map for at least X months" so I can build knowing I can at least finish it before the next change. Then wipe away.

Suggest even offering previous map versions for the cost of a DVD + postage to players who want it, or host it on dropbox (which many of us use and can do for you if you want). There aren't that many builds which are particularly earth-shattering in their size on this server, don't really see the point in dragging them with us for eternity. At some point people have to get a schematic or realise it's time to move onto the next thing.

Good stuff :) I'm discussing with admins how we'll go forward atm but I may as well post what I'm thinking in here too and get some feedback from everyone:

New World(s):

I propose that we have a system as follows…

Several official worlds pre-created (possibly pre-gen’d):

LT_landing_zone – equivalent of current spawn. Has a big hall/floating platform type area with gateways to other worlds and some kind of public information area.
LT_unstable_lands – This will be the main ’normal’ world and can be deleted at any time. It will be gen’d with new materials/etc as and when we see fit.
LT_unstable_nether – linked to LT_unstable_lands
LT_unstable_the_end – linked to LT_unstable_lands
LT_public_lands – Some standard gen and not too big world. This area is where we’ll copy in people’s builds from the old maps.

Aside from these we will have a system where players can request extra worlds to be generated (with certain choices for the gen for that world). Players will need to post these requests in the Minecraft forum. I propose a limit of 1 world request per player. If players want to do group requests they will need to sort it out amongst themselves and have just one of them make that request.

Any thoughts? Any ideas for other worlds?

I’d like to give the public lands some system for fast rail transport. I would propose something like the old balloon stations but instead we use some kind of minecart train station things located in the 4 corners + centre of the map. Using multiverse teleporters we should be able to allow minecarts to pass through gateways/teleporters of some kind, right?

We would also aim to get everything onto the live map but there may be slight delays during any new world setup.

Not sure if i'm reading this correctly but players can ask for their own world to start a build on? If that was the case wouldnt it just make sense to just make it on SSP? With the option of actually keeping their work.

Not to keen on the idea of having a variety of worlds myself, i've noticed the server hasnt had much luck with having various worlds in the past either (Like the recent portal to the old world or the portal to the 'extra hard' nether in the previous map).

Guys give it a chance, either way we need a new world generated. If the multiworld idea isnt being used as it should it wont take much to delete a world. But at least give it a try

having seen the direwolf server play i would say that keeping as much as possible in a single world is the way forward, but giving each person their own mining world for quarries and stuff. everyone in the direwolf server play is kind of missing the community spirit of having all the builds in one big world rather than in different ones

anyone got any ideas on my crashing issue?
is there some way of deleting where its saved my character's location because i reckon i might have link booked into a thaumcraft portal and it might just be confused with that

The first time we tried to bring it online it caused issues. We have a working way to do multiworld now but my plan is to allow players to go onto the test server and mark out areas for us to copy into the new worlds. Would that be acceptable to you?

Certainly sounds interesting! I just want my resources back :p

Sounds like an idea .... am just getting into it and while i am thoroughly enjoying it it can be a bit testy.
Would be good to see some kind of unobtrusive perimeter markings for a players plot as you can never be quite sure if your encroaching on other peoples territory. I know the mods must have a boat load of work to do allready but a designated "helper" to generally introduce people to the world show em around a bit etc?
Thanks All

If you look on the server there should be a file with the name of your account i.e. Reaper.dat, remove it (or rename it) and that should reset your position when you login. You'll lose inventory I think.

Maps on Linktart are enormous, the problem we have isn't plot sizes or how hard it is to tell if you are moving into another persons plot. it's the fact that most players build near spawn or in clumps.

There's only a few of us who properly explore before deciding on a plot, the rest are too busy building before the realise they've located themselves next to someone who's working on a large, ugly build :P

As halfmad said find that file but grab the program nbtedit and change your location in that then reload the game - deleting your dat file you loose all your inventory.

If this is mystcraft related read below

sorry to break the discussion away from the new server plans, but i'm getting an incredibly annoying crash on world load. i was exiting a mystcraft world via a linkbook on a bookstand and the game crashed. knowing that mystcraft occasionally did this and removed my inventory in the process i saved my inventory with NEI beforehand.

unfortunately when i tried to reload my world it keeps crashing on load. even if i try and load a completely different world it will crash on load

has anyone got any ideas on how to fix it besides starting a new world (which i really dont want to do till 1.3)

[/SPOILER]

to fix the issue. lucky i was working on this all day today.
what you need to do it delet you player.dat file on the server.
the one located in the main world folder.

once you delete that it will make a new one that will load you in the overwolrd on the main server world. this also wipes your invintoery but cannot be avoided just like the mystcraft loosing your invintory.

Agree with all of the above. Like the proposed worlds (*perhaps with a public nether for builds in the nether (or does this form part of the map generated to the public land?)), fast travel on rail would be great...agree that if the map or map/mod conflicts/corruptions are causing the lag and this cant be resolved then a swap to a new map/s is the only real option...went on a moment ago, getting 3 fps, was getting 30+ last night..

Having your own smaller world/multiple build worlds would be fine as long as people can travel between worlds, collaborate and build in each others worlds etc. (I can see everyone gravitating toward eachother, I'm also of the opinion that one main build world is the way forward, perhaps with a little more organisation when it comes to player spread....

On the point of saving builds, can totally understand that some people wont want to repeat building their 400 hour masterpieces, but think this should be kept as simple as possible to avoid headaches or lots of time spent transferring. don't think saving every last building would be necessary

just a couple of thoughts.

As suggested would a Dropbox account be alright to host the old map?

I can provide an account to upload to where everyone can have access

Must admit after 4 days of exploring and dying all to frequently i did go for a small area that i guess is close to spawn area when you consider the entire map.
Now that i am confident enough to wander here n there i will move further out.
Got my eye on the extreme top left of the map but i thought the blackened areas meant it had been mined :o That long peninsula would suit my beachfront property ambitions ..... unless someone is allready there please let me know :D

I don't think having individual build worlds would be a good idea on the whole tbh, even if you could travel between them.
It already happens with groups of friends running off together and building away, which is what the game is about, but if you gave players their own worlds then the "main" build world would be left with maybe half a dozen players and all the groups concentrating on their own world.

I understand the admin point of view it would make isolating problem builds easier, I just feel it'd fragment an already small player base :(

Realistically Scotsmoose, me, Scotsmooses mate with the terrible name, AVCC and possibly Sunlitsix if I could twist his arm would end up on one map and ignore the rest of the players. Hate to be honest but we need to build in the same world and occassionally bump into each other for it to be multiplayer.

I don't want MC with a chat box, I do want to play WITH people and with a small population too many worlds fragments it.
