*** Official OcUK Minecraft Server - Discussion and Rules ***

I'm not expecting 7-6 to be player housing really :p But the build that everyone wants at spawn to show off, don't forget there will only be 1 /home for the time being so people might think more wisely where they place their builds. It's nice to have a quick house/storage place at spawn for when you die etc then a /home miles away with your epic build!

Looks good. My only question is how much of it is going to be cheated/spawned like the mob arena?

I'm thinking just the layout really so the plan stands and people know how much room they have for the big builds and such.

Once the spawn layout has been determined, surely people will just go land grabbing around it in the same fashion we're trying to avoid? A few small houses in the middle will quickly be dwarfed and ignored by larger builds in the immediate surroundings unless a green belt is put in place?

We need a wooded area and a community mine for cobble in the general spawn area. The idea of the spawn should be:

  • A clearly defined/labelled area that is safe and secure of mob
  • A utility area containing basic start up materials
  • A community spot that should be the busiest area on the map
  • A perfectly landscaped and crafted example of aesthetically pleasing, but simple structure
  • A place to swap/share resources

It therefore should need:
  • Wood (a wood farm or managed forest (my vote is for the latter))
  • Stone/cobble (a mine essentially as chests are always emptied quicker than replenishes)
  • Food (Wheat and Melon are the best renewable resources to farm)
  • Signs for trade
  • Signs for descriptions
  • Signs for locations (Example: PoDGO this way at X,Y,Z)
  • Portals to 1.7, the nether and perhaps 'The End' depending on practicality
  • Allow players to easily see one another, so a raised spawn (say a pyramid) with a lower town below
  • A transport system
  • Anything built should be made to look as attractive as possible, but not to busy because busy gets boring faster than simplicity

Outside of the spawn should be some plots for builds then outside of the main spawn it can be anyones game

Here is my very very very rough guide for spawn!!! :D

  1. A Town Hall with the noob player housing, server information and other general tat!
  2. Market area, open air stalls could be made or maybe a typical indoor British market? :p
  3. Community build, this could be a random sculpture/building which would be removed from spawn every month or so to make room for a new community project
  4. Grand Transport Station! For both long distance and local spawn rail transport.
  5. Community farms and food storage as eating is fairly essential these days!
  6. Player housing 20x20 with a height restriction of 35
  7. Player housing 20x20 with a height restriction of 35
  8. Large Noticeboard will all the rules, news and help for players
  9. Curved water/garden feature at the centre of spawn (slopping upwards 15 or so blocks.

Now some notes:

  • Yes this is stupidly rough, but not point spending time on something that is probably going to change drastically :p
  • Player housing will be 15-20 blocks higher than spawn with the bridge slopping up the distance
  • Townhall will be 15-20 blocks higher than spawn with the large water feature slopping up the distance
  • All buildings can change in size and don't have to be square (bar player housing)
  • Behind 4/5 a new mob arena could be created
  • Some area surrounding spawn could be reserved for added player housing, new community builds that spawn might need.
  • Where number 8 is could be the portal to the 1.7 World
  • Player housing will be raffle based initially via the linktart forum. This will stop people trying to claim all the best spots 2 minutes
  • Players could trade their spots with each other if wanted.

I like the idea of a restricted sized house in the spawn village, but also I like to keep a 2nd home/castle/area of land for adventuring & sculpture building. For me, the adventuring/searching for rare ores is my main reason of playing Minecraft. Building comes 2nd, only to expand my area with scupltures, pools and Water Park rides!!
I also like finding underground dungeons, then excavating the maze corridors to form a giant cathederal like cavern.

As long as giant mushrooms are banned for a 500 block radius around spawn I couldn't give a monkeys what it looks like ;)

I know you can make portals to the nether region, but can you build two portals linked to each other?

Also we need a massive community built spawn area and ia gree make it from scratch rather than importing from 1.7. It sould be epic and look awesome.

I've been away for ages, and not played MC or read this thread for a bit, so whats the plan for 1.0? Are we starting afresh or what?

Yes, sort of. To begin with, the new 1.0 map will be brand new and blank, and everyone will start there with no tools/items/houses. After a while, we will be able to get to jump across to the 1.7 map, and a short while later I believe that builds from 1.7 will be moved to 1.0.

A community mine would become just a pointless mess of tunnels extremely fast.

True, however community quarry from ground level down to bedrock becomes a useful space for underground structures when finished.

We can even put a cap of flat earth at ground level so the quarry doesn't look horrible :D
