Official OcUK Skylake-X & Kabylake-X Review thread

I think they may well be heading very rapidly towards a thermal wall, yes. Die shrinks and better manufacturing techniques should bring lower temps over a period of years, not an increase as seems to be the case with Intel.
Yes but die shrinks have almost always come with boosted clocks because their old tick-tock model meant there was usually minimal or no IPC improvement when die shrinking, and they have to sell the new chips somehow. At the low end, power efficiency improves, which is a great selling point, but that doesn't really cut it for higher end desktop machines. Hence they boost clocks, negating any power and thermal efficiency improvements. The trouble is they can't keep doing that forever.

Wouldn't you just plug mouse and keyboard into the 2 USB 2.0 ports?

keyboard uses 2 ports, 1 mouse + 1 wireless mouse receiver for when I game on my sofa (roccat sova) +wireless adaptor for Xbox controller.

not saying it's terrible, but it just seems they've cut down a bit on the strix more than usual

bit of a disappointing review of the strix x299 motherboard

https://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2017/06/19/asus-rog-strix-x299-e-gaming-review/11

no clear cmos button? feels like such an essential feature that's helped me out dozens of times, only 4 usb 3.0 ports, which isnt enough imo (my keyboard and mouse setup use 4 as it is)

seems like asus cheaped out on the strix? less vrms than gigabyte and msi by looks of it.

kinda unsure which board to get new, asus has always been my go to because they've been feature rich, this feels like the opposite.

If I was going to buy a x core chip I wouldn't have gone for that board anyways. The only asus board I would want is the Asus Rampage VI Extreme. I have no idea why it isn't out for preorder? I read some preview that said it was releasing on release day?

There must be a way, because the battery doesn't look like it's easy to get at either.
It's got a BIOS flashback button though, which is handy.

It seems mobo manufacturers have slipped lately. Only a few high end boards have clear CMOS buttons now. I cannot remember the last board I had where I didn't need to remove the GPU to get to the battery either.
Removing CMOS buttons allows for other things like rgb lighting that we all need :p

cmos clear should be mandatory on something considered high end, since the strix is part of the ROG premium branding asus use.

I mean if it was a bare bones motherboard with the most basic of features as a cheap entry to x299? maybe.

but on a £300 mobo when other manufacturers offer them on the entire range of motherboards, it's a bit disappointing.

to me it's like they're trying to force the rampage model on everyone...with its massively tacky lighting.

You're probably correct. ******* RGB craze can **** off :p. Damn kids!

I personally don't mind rgb, as long as it's not overblown, but the new rampage with the glow effect pcie cover? looks like a 5 year old designed it...

few subtle lights I don't mind, if I get bored of it I can switch them off.

apparently the strix had a jumper port, but I still think the absence of a tiny switch on the IO is a bit of a fail

seriously considering the msi gaming pro, 12 phase vrms, clear cmos and bios flashback, looks pretty clean with minimal rgb, nice black ascetics.

You can shut off the leds on the rampage as well, but your right if there is no cmos button on the mobo I wouldn't get it either, but I wouldn't get the MSI board they have too many failures in general. What about the other Asus boards?

not interested myself in the TUF styling/brand, I've had the previous rampage models but this one looks ridiculous with the pcie shiny cover glow effect it's got going on.

don't want prime as I want all black or as close to.

how's gigabyte these days? I've used evga before but they're so late to the party these days ice lake will be out by the time they have a x299 board on the shelves

I have Gigabyte gaming 7 and it's a good board, but had a few issues when I first got it. It's much better now. Still don't like the fan software for the motherboard. Asus is much better imho

seems so hit and miss lately :( I mean, asus seemed to be the best physically built x370 motherboard, yet had the worst software at initial release with bios bricking.

flip side the asus strix GPUs are rated as some of the best with the lowest temps.

looks like my best options are either MSI gaming pro carbon, or Gigabyte gaming 3 since they all hover in the same price range..

mind explaining whats not as good with the fan control software on the gigabyte? is it not as simple as enter bios and set up a couple graphs?

Yes, but the bios fan setup wasn't good for my board. Had a few cpu fan header problems. It never worked well for me at least in the beginning. I hear the z270 boards were better, but haven't tried them. You get a warranty with what ever board you do get so pick whatever you like the most. If I was getting a x299 board I would wait for the Rampage VI. There's no other mobo I like more then the rampage

The strix isn't high end though, the ROG is.
Strix seems to be aimed at gamers and the ROG at overclockers. But the missing button which would have cost pennies is a fail.

I'm kind of torn over x299, I want to upgrade from my i5 as the slow downs in BF1 when anything happens in the background are getting beyond tiresome.

I don't think there will be much longevity in Z270 quad cores and although Ryzen has improved a lot it still has a few issues that make he hesitant to go down that route. I was looking at getting a 7820x but, rather like Kaby lake, I have no enthusiasm for it, and the motherboards prices don't help either.

I can't be the only one feeling like this, or am I just missing something?

you sound like the kind if person that coffeelake is aimed at.

z270 motherboards *should* work since it's still the same socket, if not z370 which will be cheaper than x299, and the 8700k is a 6/12 co, so 3x the threads of your i5.

the new i5 could be a bargain though, if it's a 6 core with no hyper threading that technically should put it ahead of today's i7.

information should hopefully be out within the month if they're aiming for an August launch.

Has Intel dropped one of you guys onto every forum since the launch of Ryzen ? Only asking because, what's the money like ?

he's not interested in ryzen, his main focus is gaming and he doesn't want to spend the extra for x299. he also wants more than 4 cores.

which...is coffeelake, the only other 6 cores would be skylake x or ryzen, neither of which he's interested in.

So, that's a yes then........................................you just don't want to say how much ?
