*** Official OMG I've finally got my 5850 thread **

So by flashing the HD5850 with a HD5870's BIOS file you are effectively tricking the card into thinking it's a HD5870? Does this unlock any extra processors (5870=1600 5840=1440) or just it just increase the maximum clock rate?

No we haven't flashed any bios', just edited the config of afterburner to enable the voltage control to work.

To modify the database to make it use your card settings try to close Afterburner, open your profile file with notepad (VEN_1002&DEV_6899&SUBSYS_0B001002&REV_00&BUS_1&DE V_0&FN_0.cfg stored into .\Profiles subfolder into application folder), and add the following text to it:

[Settings]
VT1165_Defaults = 17 33

Then start Afterburner again and see if it helps. It is important to add that if you have UAC enabled, then you must temporarily disable it prior to editing the file.

Not at all, good chance that would just brick it. No ones is suggesting flashing a 5870 to a 5850. Just bios' from different OEMs, but the same reference card.

No flash as all. Just adding a setting to the config file in MSI, setting the voltage in MSI and the overclock core/ram in GPU tool

Greebo and milkamil, what's the max VDDC temps that you are getting with 1.2/1.25v?

As above, how can I monitor it? Is it one of the "GPU Temp #" in GPU-Z? If so, #1 and #3 is always the same as GPU Temperature, while #2 is 2-3 above.

Greebo
I set my fan at 61% just in case :) But I can't stand how loud it is... I need to think about WC in few months.

I would be very surprised if much over 50-60% fan would increase cooling as I feel the cooler design regarding the restricted exhaust is going to be limiting....I have not tested it's a just a gut feeling, so I would not assume more speed = more cooling after optimum

I'm sure someone will check it out ;)

How can i monitor that? GPU-Z?

It's on the Thermal sensors page of GPU tool. Enable reading on all the VDDCs and click start.

Getting a good boost in fps going to 900core with 1.2v and only seeing 41C. VDDC cooling needs improving though before I can go any higher.

Ok Guys, I want to give this a try, are we editing Afterburner profiles or Ati Ace profiles, that instruction Looks clear as mud to Me !

The overvoltage protection is hardware based. Nothing you do in software can make it rise too high. I've tried. Same thing on the 4870x2, all checked with DMM. The only way to get higher voltages is a hard mod.
