*** Official Planetside 2 Thread ***

PS2 would be much more enjoyable if they got rid of snipers.

In PS1 it was bearable, just, as long as you avoided the TR zerg.

Hello, didn't know we has a PS2 thread, I am looking to get into a group of people who play regularly but casually, I'm totally new to PS2.

There isn't an OCUK outfit(clan) as such, we have plenty of people on Miller I think but we're all spread between factions and outfits. Any of the EU servers apart from Woodman should be fine. Pick the faction you like the most and hopefully someone will be in the same place.

Also may be worth looking through your server's outfit recruitment section of the official forums to see if any outfits fit the bill in terms of what you're looking for.

This video is a little old so some things have changed slightly but hopefully it will show you the basics:

The map section of it is especially out of date, you can't just click deploy buttons on the map now you just have instant action button (high activity area but you can't choose which one), squad deploy (where your squad is now) and redeploy (spawns that need reinforcements, spawns in your local area and the warp gate). The flashing orange dots you see on the map in game are activity indicators.

What's up with the fps on this still? Set it to all low on a gtx 680 and it will still drop to 20fps at times.

What's your CPU? I run a 580 and an i7.2.7 overclocked to 4.6 and never get that low. The lowest fps I get is around 40. I get 120fps in the warpgate. Indeed I saw 140fps in the warpgate the other day. This is at 1280x1024 (native res for my monitor).

Can you play this game without ever spending a penny?

Absolutely. At least on two factions - VS and NC - the stock weapons are perfectly fine. I still use standard weapons on my NC heavy (gaus saw), NC engineer (Mercenary), VS medic (pulsar), VS engineer (Pulsar - C) etc etc.

No need to buy any weapons at all. And all weapons can be purchased with certs if you want to later on. You can still have fun playing in massive battles etc etc all without spending anything at all!

Are there certain items which simply aren’t available without cash?

You can, but obviously it will take you longer to equip a character than if you buy the gun with station cash or subscribe. Starter weapons are good enough if you choose to just stick with them.

The things you can buy only with money are all purely cosmetic so stuff like camo or decals. What most of the free to play people in my outfit seem to do is wait for the double or triple station cash days Soe do for like easter, xmas etc and buy about 10 pounds worth then use that to unlock weapons and use certs (the xp currency) to add attachments or improve other things.

But yes spending nothing is possible, but I'd imagine it could be a bit of a grind if you refuse to spend a little every so often to unlock a gun or two.

I pay 8.99 a month and get 500 SC which I spend on cosmetic stuff like our outfit camouflage, and use the increased certs percentage to get all my upgrades. I'm happy with that.

I think they must be directing a lot of new players to the Woodman server at the moment as the continents are pop locked a lot now and we are getting some intense battles :-)

My in-game comm's buttons are totally trashed at present, I need to get them fixed (we use mumble anyway... but it's not the point lol)

Well no wonder at that res, I play at 1920x1080 if I ran 1280x1024 I'd probably get 60+ all the time but I don't buy new hardware to run games at a non native res just to get them to work acceptably. I really don't know how people can play this in massive battles unless they have some kind of super computer but even then I've heard SLI/CF doesn't even scale in this game.

Not spent a penny myself and having loads of fun. :)

What's wrong with the TR stock weapons? I've been using the stock TR Engi and LA gun and doing pretty well with them. I have noticed though that the NC weapons for LA, Engi and Medic seemed to get me easily at long ranges.

SLI/CF isn't necessary anyway because it's not a graphically demanding game at all. Most of the textures are awful.

The textures are awful if you don't turn on the 'ultra' textures (normal textures in reality), by setting the textures to 0 (zero) in the useroptions.ini

That only corrects a few specific textures and even then they're not the best you'll see. The rest of the game is still a horrible low res, blurry mess. Even with all of the 'Ultra' graphical options and increased rendering level (akin to 2x or 4x SSAA, and better than 'ultra' textures) I can still hit well over 100fps when no other players are around (and sometimes when they are) with a single 7970, which was pretty much my main point about SLI/CF. Maybe if you went ultra graphics and massive res with 3 monitors it might be necessary.

Not that it matters, it's not one of those games that I like to spend time looking around.....except when I'm looking for enemy scum to kill!!! :D

Bear in mind this is a massive world, and isn't Skyrim which was very much eye candy. They have other focus area's (as much as I'd like to see the textures get better, I'd prefer they fix the crashes and general playability).

I'm not criticising it's graphics, merely pointing out facts about it and the GPU grunt which isn't needed. I totally agree with you on the things they need to focus on.

The main thing I find is how sluggish PS2 feels in movement, like running around in heavy mud. I played a bit of the new BF3 maps last night and it was so much smoother and lighter feeling. If anything, PS2 has made me better at BF3 than I can remember being! :p

Big battles run quite often at 50fps + for me. Looks stunning. 1280x1024 is absolutely fine to play with (everyone did a few years ago - ie. during BF1942/BF2 etc etc). Makes no difference to play at all.

Sorry but there's a night and day difference between 1920x1080 and 1280x1024 in my eyes.

I'm not convinced that you're not getting fps dropping below 30 at any point, regardless of resolution. This game is CPU limited on even the fastest OC'd i7s.
