Looking forward to this game more every day. I never played the original, but I'll be spending a great deal of time with this 
The only problem I have is faction choice. My friend was a VS player in the original game, and is planning on going with them again this time, only they look like the faction I least want to play. Not sure who I prefer out of the NC and TR, though.

That was the end game - cont locks. The whole point was to fight for bases/land.

Seriously although I never played Planetside, I can tell this game is going to feel fun. Looks like a FPS I can immerse myself in properly because of the scale, constant never ending fight and the many things you can do but also something I can pick up and have a really good time playing.
Free too. Love it.

Actually tried to order the US april edition of PC Gamer (came with beta keys) but seems to be sold out 
Hoping my old PS subscription is enough to get me in but theres a few folks I wanted along with me who might have to wait oh well.
This is VERY likely to be one of the most amazing titles ever, I played to **** outta the first one for a fair while and loved it to bits. It came out at a time when broadband wasn't really around much (and playing it needed a decent connection) and I remember it being one of the few games that have actually required PC upgrades to get it playing nice. I usually run a pretty ninja PC so it was quite a suprise to NEED upgrades.
I think those 2 things will be less of a problem this time around.

Pick a gun and practice with it till you can beat most of the server.
Moving up the top 20 is the endgame.

Did PS1 have fees, I can't remember even though I played it for 2 years...
PS1 did have fees yes, though I believe you can now play for free on that too.

Don't worry, I don't remember where, but I'm pretty certain it was confirmed that anyone who subscribed to PS1 at some point in time will get a beta invite, at the same time as all the US PC Gamer key users.

Game's still fairly deep in alpha though, so I'd be surprised if it was before October.
Ahhhh thats not good enough. I mean being awesome is great and all but youve got the constrained map games for that - CS, BF and a load of skill based shooters. Besides the nature of the top 20 means thats only going to appeal to 20 players at any one time.
The game needs a goal like conquest, moving the map, ultimate victory and a restart. Otherwise its just fighting over the same ground, putting in loads of effort, logging off, doing it again. Fine for the first couple of months but the meh.
