***Official Squad Thread***

We are now pushing a version Alpha 7.7 hotfix release, here are the changes:
  • Fixed crashing in Squad's custom full auto sound and voip sound code relating to sound rendering in Unreal Engine 4.12 being asynchrounous now.
  • Fixed a crash related to gunshots not having an audio device under certain circumstances.
  • Fixed some issues with sound concurrency, causing certain gunshot sounds to cut out.
  • Fixed exploit relating to FOV.
  • Made a minor fix to deployable placement logic so it is less likely deployables can be placed on rooftops.
  • Added code so server admins can view the framerate of their servers in the scoreboard.
  • Fixed distance delay on certain explosion sounds.
  • Fixed an issue where the camera changed to third person on exiting a vehicle in single player Jensen's Range.
  • Fixed issue where vehicles get bogus rotations after destruction (e.g., sideways vehicle wreck).
  • Fixed an issue where players lose mouse input in the main menu / map.
  • Updated the Ural wreck collision.

The game looks amazing, I remember reading that it performs poorly on AMD hardware, is that still the case? I promised my self I wouldn't buy anymore early access games but I'm tempted to get this

Some AMD cpu's are still having issues processing the sound. It really does vary from model to model. Performance is nowhere near what we want currently but the next big release is focusing on fixing that.

Couple shots that may or may not be making it's way into Alpha v8:

Fog is not added as an optimisation measure. Fog may be added for map variety, not to gain FPS :P

Alpha v8 is shaping up nicely now. In the mean time this snuck out while I was away over the weekend:

Squad Merchandise

Hi Squaddies,

You've been asking us for ages, and we've finally done it. Squad Merchandise is a go! Starting Tuesday October 25th, you can pre-order your Squad gear and feel good about it, because Offworld Industries is donating $5 (our profits) to support real veterans with every purchase.

We're proud to announce our partnership with Chinatown Screen printing of Vancouver and Stack-Up, a charity aimed at supporting US, NATO, Australian and New Zealand veterans through video games to offer a selection of Squad merchandise to friends and fans of the game.

GMmdB8m.png

Meet Jordan, the guy creating all the goodies.

AB404UCl.jpg

Established in 2013, Chinatown Screen Printing is a full service studio in Vancouver that focuses on merchandising and brand development. Jordan, the owner and operator of the company, has worked in the visual effects industry for three and a half years producing custom crew merchandise for some of the many feature films produced in Vancouver. Jordan hand screen prints every piece that goes through his studio and is very excited to be working with Squad to create quality apparel we know you will love to wear!

As part of Jordans commitment to our charity work he has offered to add customisation Kit badges so you can keep your squad identity outside of the game. You will be able to choose your role for most of the swag. (Hats excluded)

Stack-Up Charity Partnership

UdcdzNCl.jpg

We're also especially proud to be partnering with Stack-Up to donate $5 from every item sold in the store.

Founded and run by a combat veteran who has personally felt the impact gaming can have emotionally and psychologically on veterans, Stack-Up is a the only charity supporting military and veterans through video gaming. They send supply crates full of video games to combat zones and military hospitals, as well as sending disabled and deserving vets to major gaming events, and creating local communities to support vets. Stack-Up wants to raise morale to fight the effects of depression, combat injuries, and post traumatic stress, all while bringing vets together through in a supportive and understanding gaming community.

Stack-Up at PAX West

Research shows that trauma sufferers have a significantly reduced number of flashbacks while focusing on highly engaging visual-spatial tasks - in essence, video games. There are also profound therapeutic effects both for soldiers in a war zone or who are readjusting back into society following deployment. Video games provide soldiers a friendly competitive environment after work hours; instead of soldiers disappearing back to their bunk after a shift, theyre interacting with others and having fun.

The charity functions as a stack. In the military, a stack is a slang term for when an assault team forms up single file along the entrance of the room where they believe a threat is located. With B]Stack-Up[/B], their stack represents a strong community of friends, family, brothers and sisters-in-arms, and supporters. We're proud to be a part of a community coming together with the common mission of helping veterans through video gaming.

GMmdB8m.png

Here is where it gets really interesting

As an extra incentive to raise the bar, on Tuesday October 25th at 12pm noon (21:00 GMT) you can start pre-ordering your merchandise and the first 100 orders will receive a free Squad Steam Key! Set your alarms! (First orders will ship approx. November 8th)

So by popular request, Squad Merchandise is now a reality. Thanks for helping us support Jordan's craft and Stack-Up, a great cause that aligns well with our values.

Enjoy the merchandise and thanks for your support!

Offworld Out.

I'm thinking of buying this in a minute but not 100% sure I will be able to run it ok? what do you think? I know there is going to be an update soon to fix performance but will it be playable now on my setup? anyone else got this with similar specs to me?

thanks

Steam Halloween sale might be dropping soon. May be worthwhile to hang on for a few more hours and see it if makes it in.

Remember you can always buy from Steam and refund if you're not happy with it.

The Steam refund offer, within two weeks of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime, applies to games and software applications on the Steam store.

We're aiming to have Alpha v8 out soon which will be our first patch which is focused on addressing many performance issues.

Upcoming Tournaments

Hi Squaddies,

Want to take Squad to the next level? Get your teams together, because there are lots of opportunities to compete coming up. Squad Masters is hosting the first massive round robin tournament of Squad in November, and with the launch of Squad Frontlines, there will be even more opportunities to compete!

GMmdB8m.png

Squad Masters November Championship

1IsMHxQl.jpg.png

Saturday, November 12th kicks off two separate hybrid round robin tournaments. Theres a 12 man league and an 18 man league, where winners in a qualifying round robin stage proceed to a single elimination second stage and then the championship final.

In the first stage, groups of four teams compete separately and winners proceed to the second stage. The top two participants are saved from each group, and when teams are tied theyre ranked by the number of wins each had against the others. The second stage is a single elimination tournament.

So gather your troops and get your clan ready - registration is open until November 7th! Registration, rules, and more information can be found here.

GMmdB8m.png

Squad Frontlines

YsfHFhU.png

Squad Frontlines is a brand new free tournament based around Squad. Unlike any other clan ladder or online tournament, anybody can join and players participate in a simulated war called a campaign. Campaigns stretch over the course of several months with weekly battles.

The tournament includes commanding officers, divisions, and a grand battle map on the front page showing the progress of the war from week to week. Divisions are self governed and members can climb their way to the top to command their own company of soldiers or even become a general!

Squad Frontlines is built on a foundation of leadership, dedication and organisation. Team play is the rule, not the exception. Every soldier in the tournaments participate in making their division a well-oiled machine making their weekly battles some of the most intense and rewarding ways that Squad can be played.

Registration for Squad Frontlines will be live very soon, with weekly battles starting soon after on Saturdays! Rules and more information can be found here.

GMmdB8m.png

Get out there and have fun!

Between the November Championship with Squad Masters and the launch of Squad Frontlines, next month will have a lot going on! Both of these events are operated independently outside of Squad and Offworld Industries, but we love the enthusiasm and the opportunity to play the game in different ways. Enjoy the tournaments!

I'm not buying from steam as skint but have cash in my g2a wallet to spend,i really want to buy it but not sure if I will get playable frames on my system,i can play every other game ive tried at very good frames,eg battlefield 1 over 70fps on ultra etc

It's a very different beast to other games. Larger player numbers, unlimited draw distance, engine is still being developed etc so you can't really compare to other games unfortunately.

ok thanks,i think I'm going to wait a while and buy from steam when I have the funds as that way if it dosnt run for me I can get a refund, looks an amazing game though and ive been wanting it for ages

Wanted to tell you earlier but we're having a free weekend soon :)

Squad Up!

The Squad community has always been something were proud of - you've always had our backs and stuck with us through good patches and bad patches. With the coming release of Alpha 8 we finally feel like we have something we are really proud to show off to the greater gaming community.

In conjunction with our Alpha 8 release and our November 11th Charity event, Squad will be running its first ever Steam free weekend from Thursday November 10th at 10AM PST (5pm GMT) to Sunday November 13th at 1PM PST (8pm GMT). This will be a great chance to finally pile all your skeptical friends into the game and squad up. We are extremely excited for this event and have been waiting a long time for it.

You should expect a variety of surprises coming your way along with the free weekend and working with our partners Bluefang, Multiplay, Fragnet, and Pingperfect, we are prepared to have a cluster of extra servers ready for the influx of new players.

Please help us in welcoming them and helping people through their first trauma inducing RPG hits.

wL8Pe4il.jpg.png

The schedule is going to be packed

We'll be hosting this party from the Offworld studios, where some of our developers will be playing the game with you, streaming, and having a blast.

Here are some of the highlights:

Community Clan fight night: Some of the best combat in the community
Streamer/Developers VS Streamer/Developers: 72 man battle royale!
4 vs 4 CQB random maze bracket tournament

Call to Arms

The Squad community is filled with veterans of all generations and we are very fortunate to have the opportunity to play our game with them on a regular basis. They've become the backbone of many of the best communities and clans and we greatly appreciate their passion for Squad. We have four of our own who have served in various roles for their respective militaries and it is the least we can do to show our commitment to them as developers and partners.

Our hope is that by becoming a fundamental pillar of Stack-up, Squad and its community can start to effect change on a larger scale and encourage others to do the same.

On November 11th, we hope to see you at the charity drive to support Stack-Up and honour all our brothers and sisters in arms.

I'm sorry, I'm just as excited for this release as you guys are!

Nice man any numbers on how well the performance boost was?

Quote from one of our programmers:

From what we have been seeing it seems that most are GPU limited now. Only weaker CPUs are still CPU limited. I've been seeing people say they are getting 40%-100% more frames, but we cannot make any promises.

Takes deep breath...

Alpha Version 8

The hype train has arrived! A monthly recap and Version 8 in one go!

rockettechie_receiving.gif

Alpha Version 8 is now released. After hitting one of Squad's biggest milestones with the introduction of vehicles in Alpha Version 7, we could finally focus on doing an optimization pass on the core systems now that all the underlying wires are connected. This was a team wide effort, with a lot of micro-optimisations quickly building up to a level of performance that the team is proud to present to the players.

That is not the whole story though! We added a few treats to add more spice to the current gameplay and quite a few quality of life improvements alongside the main focus which was optimization.

As more content and features are added, we're able to better pace the game to where we eventually want to go. These changes have to be implemented over time so the player base has a chance to adjust and adapt. This has been the trend for for the entire life cycle of Squad, and this patch is no different. We are steadily slowing things down so there is more time to breathe and those engagements feel more significant.

Version 8 is now available via Steam and below is a full changelog.

W69R0vo.png

Major Changes

Optimization Pass

We've done a major optimization pass over almost every single system in Squad. We've improved collision and physics performance, graphical and GPU performance, multithreaded major pieces of the game such as animations and vehicle updates, and many more performance improvements.

Additionally, Effects have had a wholesale overhaul after some detailed profiling on both Intel and AMD machines. Optimization of shader implementations and a detailed pass over configs and best practices gave us a 10x improvement in performance of effects. This should greatly improve reliability of frame rate in large firefights. There is still a bit of work to do but the results we've seen are already worth the effort.

As always, we will continue to improve the performance and optimize the game with every patch.

W69R0vo.png

New Vehicle Variants and Assets

rockettechie_firing.gif

Added improvised rocket artillery variant of the technical for both Insurgents and Militia factions. This vehicle is hard to aim and use effectively, especially without the aid of a forward spotter and communication between driver, gunner and observer. Rocket artillery technicals can only be found in small numbers on large maps such as Yehorivka, Kohat and Chora.

SpiKQGZl.jpg

They are worth 20 tickets on destruction and have a respawn timer of 18 minutes, so stay out of trouble!

crows_humvee.gif

Added a HMMWV variant that has the remote controlled weapon station CROWS on top, with an M2A1 mounted on it. This will provide much better protection for the gunner as he is safely inside of the vehicle, with magnified optics on his .50 cal machine gun. Be mindful of the long reload time. They are worth 20 tickets on destruction.

3VJkpdel.jpg

Added NSV heavy machine gun emplacement (Russians are sometimes right!) to the Russian faction. Firing at a blitzing 700 rounds per minute, this HMG is certainly a force to be reckoned with. It comes in both tripod and bunker form. Build cost is unchanged from the placeholder they have been using up until now.

5J9g6hal.jpg

MdvkTl6l.jpg

Added a forward facing shield to the Dshk machine gun. This can be found on both the deployable as well as the vehicle mounted version. There are still unshielded versions available for those that prefer greater visibility over front facing protection.

uB2yszxl.jpg

xODd0z6l.jpg

W69R0vo.png

Updated Weapon Mechanics

Penetration

penetration_1.gif

Added experimental environment penetration for heavy machine gun calibers. We will be watching closely, if all goes well expect small arms to get a similar treatment in the future.

penetration_2.gif

W69R0vo.png

Low Stamina Sway

Added penalty to weapon sway when you have low stamina. The lower the stamina the worse the sway will get. Be aware of your movement in hostile territory.

Slightly increased visual suppression effects across all weapons.

W69R0vo.png

Lighting & Post Processing

We have done a huge lighting pass on all the maps in order to unify the quality and look of the game. Each map now has at least two lighting scenarios using custom skyboxes in order to provide variety and to help players identify gameplay layers more easily. Some key areas such as Fools Road tunnels got a complete overhaul as well, using lighting to help direct players. Additionally, our post processing has been unified to ensure effects such as bloom, ambient occlusion and lens flares are enhancing all our maps.

5cDSOtil.jpg.png

28ENhE2l.jpg

11BjeAtl.jpg

In the future we will continue to push our lighting tech further but in this pass we had to be careful not to work against our main focus for this update, optimization.

W69R0vo.png

Main Menu

Server Browser

server_browser.gif

We've dramatically improved the Server Browser, switching to an asynchronous update method where results are streamed in as they come in. We've also improved the sorting, so that server entries are sorted immediately upon being added to the browser and fixed a number of issues where the server browser would show incorrect results or fail to refresh.

Graphics Menu

LEcbYsxl.png.jpg

Our new programmer Zak, with some help, has vastly improved the Graphics Menu, improving a number of options and simplifying some of the more complex choices in the menu. We've also spent some time to auto detect a number of settings that were previously exposed, as we've found that incorrectly setting them would negatively impact users performance.

Finally, we've added a few tooltips to explain what each option does to help users better understand the performance impact of changing certain graphics options. We also added a button that will clear out your cached user settings, just in case something goes horribly wrong.

Changelog

Gameplay

Spawning

We want to remind players that time spent incapacitated waiting for a medic counts towards respawn time - so hang in there and encourage your squad mates to fight their way to you instead of giving up and looking at the spawn screen for a long time. And now for the changes:
  • Increased base spawn timers for FOBs and RPs by an additional 15 seconds.
  • FOB is now 45 seconds on top of other penalties. (Was 30)
  • Rally Point timer is now 60 seconds on top of other penalties. (Was 45)
  • Increased spawn timer penalties on team kills to 30 seconds per team kill. (Was 15)
  • Increased the spawn timer penalty on suicides to 60 seconds (Was 30)

FOB and Logistics

  • Increased the time it takes before an unsupplied FOB goes active for spawning by 2 minutes. (7min now, was 5min)
  • Decreased passive FOB ammo point generation rate to 0.5 per second. (Was 2 per second)
  • Added scoring for logistics drop off based on the amount of ammo and supplies that were successfully absorbed by the FOB. The score is also given to any passengers in a logistics vehicle as a reward for them escorting it safely to its destination.
  • Reloading an emplaced heavy machine gun at a FOB now costs 50 ammo points.
  • Reloading a vehicle carried .50 cal (M2/Dshk) now costs 75 ammo points per magazine at a FOB.
  • Reloading a BTR now costs 50 ammo points per magazine of KPVT API ammo.
  • Reloading the CROWS at a FOB costs 175 ammo points per magazine.
  • Reloading the improvised rocket artillery technical at a FOB costs 300 ammo points. Note that the rocket technicals rocket pod has to be completely empty of ammo before a rearm is possible.
  • Logistic drivers now receive points for delivering resources to a FOB.

Weapons

jntkTrtl.jpg

  • Heavy machine guns now do even more damage versus infantry targets. Damage versus vehicles remain the same.
  • Heavy machine guns now have a work in progress focus ability like most handheld weapons have, giving you a better sight picture for those critical shots.
  • Minor pass on differentiating the way each weapon deals damage, especially at range.
  • US Automatic Riflemans M249 now has a small and lighter 100 round bag (was 200 round boxes before). Total ammo capacity increased by 100 and weapon sway is slightly lower.
  • Militia got a new version of the M249 SAW, an old school long barreled version with a bit more range than the shortened version. It retains the heavy 200 round ammo boxes.

Misc Changes

  • Intel required to reveal caches to the BLUFOR factions has been increased by 33% on 4k INS maps and 50% on 2k INS map respectively.
  • Added exclusion zones to weapons caches for the Insurgency game mode, so that you cannot bury the cache in deployables. For this release the radius is set to 20m around the cache.
  • Replaced about 50% of regular HMMWVs with the CROWS variant.
  • Replaced about 50% of regular Dshk Technicals with a version that has a turret shield.
  • Added scoring for vehicle drivers when their gunners kill something, rewarding the driver equally as it was a team effort.
  • Reduced the ticket value on loss of a regular HMMWV to 12 (was 16).
  • Zoom function on vehicle turrets such as the BTR-80 and the HMMWV with CROWS has been temporarily moved to Q so that number keys are freed up for vehicle inventories.
  • Fixed HESCO walls facing the wrong way when you build them. (Double stacked layer now facing away from you)
  • Removed redundant vehicles from several map layers. Mostly a few transport trucks on maps like Yehorivka, Kohat and Chora as well as the a few HMMWVs or Technicals on larger Insurgency layers.
  • Vehicles now behave differently depending on the surface the wheels are contacting.

Optimizations

  • Improved the game load time by assuming all packages were created with the latest version of the Unreal Engine.
  • Improved the conversion of FNames to FStrings, bringing about a major improvement to the games startup time and a general performance boost while in game and spawning actors.
  • Fixed incorrect inlining in C++ functions related to getting bone rotations, bringing about a modest performance increase with animating bodies.
  • Improved the performance of the Serialize function, improving load times and network replication times.
  • Improved Capture Zone Resource Components by removing their ability to tick.
  • Optimized Soldier Ragdoll Component by ensuring location finding only happens on the server.

  • Optimized radial menu by reducing the number of layers to update.
  • Moved compass to C++ and simplified the underlying logic.
  • Optimized power cable tool to make use of splines for placement, and fixed a code issue causing all power lines to always be considered for rendering, also fixed their movability state and culling distance
  • Fixed ejected gun shells colliding too many times.
  • Optimized weapons by moving their Tick to C++
  • Fixed engine code going through all bones every tick and removing spaces, improving load times and object spawning time.
  • For those with underperforming CPUs you can now use Low or Medium Effects Quality setting to reduce the CPU cost of effects. Their tick rate is now dependent upon your effects quality setting and many other effects have varying culling distances set based upon your Effect Quality setting.
  • Improved performance on particle effects that used Ribbons.
  • Footsteps, bullet impacts, muzzle effects, shell ejections, shockwaves, deployable effects, shovel effects, and many other particle effects will now cull based upon your Effect Quality setting and distance to them, previously they always ran PhysX raytraces even if they would never be seen or created.
  • Streaming texture pool is now detected automatically based on your GPU, fixing a number of issues were incorrectly setting this value would cause massive performance problems.
  • Major improvement to animation system: All variables have been fast path enabled and the main update threads are now multithreaded; The event graph has been moved to C++ running in parallel with the game thread (Note: We arent finished with this yet, More improvements are on the way).
  • Simplified Vehicle Collision Bodies, using a smaller number of simpler shapes, improving physics performance with many vehicles.
  • Improved the Vehicle Manager to update every vehicle in parallel, improving the physics performance with vehicles.
  • Removed an unnecessary animating mesh from the soldier.

Systems

  • Fixed certain situations where you could not change to bandage or certain other weapon groups after changing role at an ammo crate.

Oh and we've also dropped in Steam trading cards. You'll get 3 of them after 3 hours of play you'll have to trade for the rest of them if you want a full set.

******* awesome update, question please below.

I noticed "Steam user application data can now be reset via the game settings panel by clicking Clear Cached User Data in the Game Settings Window. This requires a restart of the game and we highly suggest everyone does it at least once to clear old obsolete settings from your config." Is that the same as deleting my Squad folder in %localappdata% ? or do we still have to delete this folder manually ?

Does exactly as you said :)

Great job guys :D not once dropped below 50fps @1440p max settings.. Game is much more enjoyable now.
Not played all maps yet Fools Road etc was very bad for me.

The only thing I not sure I like but I can get used too it. Have you guys slowed down the running speed? or is it just much slower because I just came off BF1

Pretty sure it's because you've been on BF1. Having been testing v8 for a while then going back to BF1 I've felt I was super human! The sprint/acceleration to top speed hasn't changed for v8.

Xcept1 - now that we're GPU limited, what's the likelihood of crossfire/sli support any time soon?

Unfortunately that is pretty much down to Epic to implement into UE4. It's an awful lot of work to do because of the deferred rendering UE4 uses.

There was an unofficial fix but it doesn't seem to be working with v8 anymore. If anything changes or I find anything out I'll post it in here right away.
