*****Official Star Wars: The Old Republic Thread*****

Hey guys, just started recently playing this on the FTP model but thinking about subbing. Where is the cheapest place to get some game time? £19 from the offical site/origin, is the cheapest I can find.

Hi all.

I bought TOR at launch but never ended up playing past the free month I got with the game.

I found it pretty good but didn't think it was worth the subscription price at the time. My biggest gripes were probably the fact that at the time it felt a lot more like a single player game with other people around than a MMO, I do get that BioWare wanted your character to have a story and I liked that but I found the game pretty lonely although admittedly I didn't know anyone else that played the game, I also found the waits trying to get a team together for the flashpoints to be really frustrating since at the time unless you were a tank or a healer you could say goodbye to trying to get in within an hour.

I know the game now has a F2P offer. Can I trouble you for an update as to the state of the game?

Since launch what have the major changes been? What have they done right/wrong?

Its £8.99 a month on the official site. Or do you mean you want to buy a game card?

The F2P restrictions are a bit draconian, if you want to play it past the starting areas then you really do need to sub.

A bit draconian!?! A BIT?!

Try EXTREMELY Draconian instead, it's much more accurate.

Reduced XP, pitiful currency cap, woeful storage options, 1 message PER MINUTE to [Global], Reduced quest rewards, Increased goods costs from NPC's, No character customisation's, Not able to wear a title, Not able to use purple quality items, No companion customisation's, 3 Warzone Loot rolls per WEEK (you can do more, you just won't get loot rolls). Constant "Subscribers get better options" adverts, Limited number of ingame revives, etc, etc and the list goes on...

Honestly Free2Pay in SWTOR is a joke. And I've played several.. it's hands down, easily one of the worst Free2Pay packages available.

Well, they do need you to get people to sub or spend money, and LOTRO is more restrictive IMO.

Two things..

1) You're wrong about LOTRO. With LOTRO (and several other games), you can earn Turbine points in-game that you can spend in the game store, without costing you real money... SWTOR does not give you even this option.

2) There's a BIG BIG difference between wanting to give a publisher money because it makes things better ingame, and HAVING to give a publisher money because they were to tightfisted to have their Free2pay any other way. SWTOR is firmly in the latter. Constantly chucking subscribe adverts at you. The idea is to get your players to give you money willingly... not forcing them to because of your draconian Free2Pay options.

LoTRO doesn't increase most vendor costs for non subbers. Nor does it give non subbers less XP.
No matter how you dress it up, SWTOR really does have the most restrictive F2P model of the mainstream F2P MMO's.

It's almost like the devs said to themselves what can we restrict for non subs to intice them into subbing instead of asking what they can add to the sub to make it more worthwhile.

I don't know, I never really found it restrictive, and I played until level 13/14 as a non-sub. Less XP never really bothered me, nor did the bag limit or whatever. I can see why people would be bothered by it but I personally am not, and found LoTR:O to be more annoying in this respect.

Come back, I need a tank to run HM for all my alts.

:D

I tried having a play a week or so ago, didn't last long.

Combination of logging in and finding i had to pay to hide my helm, pay to show my "hard" earned titles (remember i done the JK final fight solo before it was nerfed :p) then of course most of my credits had vanished into escrow (350k cap is just useless).

Final straw was when i done the new advanced gear quest that gives 99 tionese comms or something only to find out end game currencies have a cap of 60 each if not subbing.

All in all there was just too many reminders of what i didn't get without paying.

To an extent you are correct, in that lower XP isn't really an issue... Neither was the bag limit as a lot of vendors will merch for you, and you can send your companion off to sell grays if you wanted them to.

However even so LoTRO isn't as restrictive, by default you get 15 extra slots, but with a one time purchase of Mines of Moria (or even subbing for one month), you got another 30 slots permanently, with Riders of Rohan adding another 15 slots).

SWTOR's currency cap is another thing that really really puzzles me, especially as most (good) items on the GTN are priced in the millions how is a F2P'r going to be able to buy anything. It's an artificial roadblock. LoTRO doesn't have a cap

You see it's the little things that make players think if they're really being welcomed, or just wanted for their ability to boost bank balances.

LOTRO does have a gold cap though does it not? 2 for F2P'ers, 3 for Premium members and unlimited for VIPs? Is that not the same thing really?

If there is a cap in LoTRO, it's because I'd completly forgotten about it, because once you sub for a month (or buy Mines of Moria), there is no cap permanently.

One of my premium toons has over 14Gold

Just wish my preferred toon in SWTOR had the same ability.

I'm telling you SWTOR can learn a LOT from LoTRO's Free2Pay options.

Despite being a Die Hard fan of the game, I 100% agree that aside from levelling 1-50 which the caps don't really infringe upon it is too restrictive for end game purposes, I understand they want to make money from the F2P Market, but plenty of subscribers are pouring cash in (GUILTY!!) - but there shouldnt be gear restrictions, a higher money cap (5million), maybe monthly allowance to Ops instead of none, or only SM Ops?

Dunno...

I redownloaded this, can't play my chrs without deleting half of them. If I did all my raid gear I couldn't equip. I just wanted to finish off the storyline on a couple of chrs. Not going to get me back like this are they

If you are not subbed, you shouldnt have to delete any; it means you have to choose the 2 you want to play, Pref players will soon get 6 toon cap though.

Didn't realise it was that restrictive, doesn't seem like a very good model to me?

It's like they were told to make it f2p, but really, really don't believe in the model. So instead they make it a let's-force-them-to-sub model, which just gets peoples backs up.

I lasted about 10 minutes, which is a shame, because the game itself is quite good now.
