Hi Folks,

I currently have:

Unifi UDM in the lounge
Ethernet from that up to the study, connected into an US-8-60W. This has most of my ethernet devices (NAS, Desktop PC, Hue Bridge, etc>
Ethernet from that switch into the loft, where there is another US-8-60W
Two nanoHDs connected to the loft switch, powered by its PoE.

I want to upgrade the nanoHDs to two U6-LRs. In part for the additional bandwidth, but mostly to try and get a bit more range as I'm right on the edge of good enough coverage for some of my ring devices on the outside of the house.

Two questions:

1 - Has anyone done this upgrade path (nanoHD to U6-LR) ? - What did you think? Was there slightly better range and performance?

2 - I'm of the impression my existing switch in the loft won't be up to powering the new APs (the switch is POE, not POE+) - Any suggestions on what to replace it with ?

I moved over some of the network at weekend and surprisingly it just worked, switch dropped off old cloud key and appeared on the UDM and after a minute or so sorted itself out and client worked as expected, this is with the network devices being on separate vlan as well.

Was expecting to have a bit of faff but luckily wasn't the case.

Unless you have LOTS of IoT devices you probably won’t see much boost from the U6-LR over the HD. I’d be tempted to go straight to the U7-Pro as that gets you all the benefits of WiFi6 and possibly WiFi7 if it ever becomes a thing in the UK.

The US-8-60W should cope fine with two of any UBNT access points (not the XG or Enterprise APs though)

Uk Ultra now mounted at the top floor following running Ethernet cable and getting full speed (4 to 10 times faster than previous solutions) love it!

Now to make a run from the office whilst there is holes in my plasterboard!

I only have 200-300.

Dream router would have been good enough for me but, I think I’m going to dabble with the express when it releases. Must be better than the virgin hub 3 I have now!

I was going to get a Dream Router to connect to a Superhub 5 but out of stock everywhere, is the Express basically a similar product? show the Superhub in model mode, connect Express (or UDR) and away you go?

That’s how I’m using it yes.

Limitation with the express is it can only run a network (no cameras, etc iirc) and can only operate another 4 Unifi devices.

I’ve got mine connected to a flex mini to give me more ports.

we have... er... 15? Amazon Echo devices and the like dotted around. Is that what you mean?

Main reason for the LR was that if its just 3-5 meters better it will fix a problem I've got with some of my Ring Devices losing coverage intermittently.

Interesting my current switch might work. I'll give that a go.

So the U6-LR is 4x4 MuMiMo on 2.4GHz which means it can talk to 4 1x1 devices simultaneously. Any other U6 access point is 2x2 (not 6E) on the 2.4GHz band so the U6-LR is the king of WiFi6 with IoT devices.

cheers, not bothered about cameras and 4 others is plenty

as you say some sort of switch needed for extra ports

just need it to be available now :p any idea when it will be on sale?

I bought an EU version and bought an anker two port usb C plug (and two cables) for the switch and the express. Think you are talking an extra £20 all in with a more elegant solution imo.

Edit: get it quick if it’s on UK store. I suspect it will move quickly.

So the Ultra suffix will mean "previous generation crap" as well as "best connected home/SMB gateway we offer". Sensible.
