*** Official Ubiquiti Discussion Thread ***

Hello folks

I'm currently using a full unifi setup (2 x USW, U6LR, IWHD, flex minis etc.) with my router being a USG 3P in to the Fibre ONT. I've been watching the slow improvements to the UDM Pro/SE line but in reality what I need at the moment is something that I can stick between the router and the switches that can allow me to add parental controls to any device connected to my network and manage access to sites, site analytics etc. I've seen hte Firewalla stuff and I have no objection to purchasing a unit if they are actually any good but happy to also spin up a VM, a RpI or small low powered unit and run dedicated software as well.

Is there any device/software that people could recommend that offers decent parental controls by device/user, MAC or IP etc.?

Untangle. It is the router though.

Thanks @WJA96; does it have a mobile app to make changes as I forgot to say that the missus is likely to need to have access to change access arrangement for the kids on the fly as sometimes we need to change their viewing habits. My last foray in to Untangle was that it was still webgui based? I don't mind changing the router from the USG if need be.

No app. You log straight into the GUI from anywhere.

Correct. But the paid Home services come with support. People using Home contracts for business use don’t get business support for free.

That certainly didn’t used to be the case previously. Had support on own hardware before, maybe an Arista change.
No idea, I did the live support trial and opened three tickets. They did everything possible to wangle out of it and blame it on something other than their software. Their forums are pretty dead also. On one of the tickets I opened, it’s listed as a fix on a newer software release.

The product is good, don’t get me wrong, but unless you’re using their own appliances and pay for live support, you’re on your own. At least with OPNsense or similar there is an active community for support. And Ubiquiti have been helpful when I’ve opened a ticket with them or posted on their forums.

Certainly don't disagree re their forums. I'm using Sophos XG atm, but opnsense on list to be looked at. With things like QUIC coming through more and more changes things again.

Unifi were proactive re an AP issue I had, but then weren't clear if they were seeing anything in the logs. I factory reset everything and it improved things, I asked if they'd seen anything in logs re errors, miss config - no response. I've since sent the unit back (U6-Pro) and replaced with another U6-Lite and have had no isssues.

I think Pi-hole offers some parental controls.

99.99% of the hardware issues are caused by users buying hardware too new for the version of Debian the product is built on. Even now it’s not entirely happy with UEFI boot devices.

And you can’t really compare them to Ubiquiti because with Ubiquiti the hardware and the software are basically one and the same and yet Ubiquiti seem to have more configuration issues than Untangle.

Anyone know why my switch us-8-60w randomly died last night seemingly sending a surge to a smaller poe powered switch killing that too?!

Kinda outrageous given the combined prices of both devices and of course the pitiful warranty.

Hello guys

Just got virgin gigabit (at long last...) - I assume a USG Pro 4 with IPS/IDS disabled will handle this OK?

Bit the bullet and bought a u6-mesh to give my UDR another go in the hope it resolves the poor coverage I was getting.

The BT Smart Hub 2 is doing a fine job, but thinking ahead for when contract is up and likely will move ISP, plus would like to mess about getting the iot stuff segregated.

Will see how it goes, ideally would like to just stick an AP on the upstairs ceiling but as I’m an idiot I didn’t get a cable run to the loft when the house was built :(

Do have a network port on the landing (where the u6-mesh will be plugged in), so longer term thinking can probably do something with the cable that’s already there, and dropping something down from the loft maybe as it’s only a stud wall (but with some noggins in the way…)

Noggins are pretty easy to deal with, cut out a rectangle, drill through and screw the rectangle back into the noggin.

Yes, it makes a mess but you'll know you did it once you have filled it and repainted.

EDIT: rodding down from the top is the best approach as you'll also have to drill through the top beam in the loft. If there are any sockets or light switches close by there may already be a hole you can get lucky and rod though.

Sadly the light switch is the other side of the doorway, else as you say could’ve been able to go through an existing hole.

Not urgent but will look into it properly following my u6 mesh experiment.
