Official vs Real World Fuel Economy

Probably not to be honest. You know they are a waste of time when you run the numbers on replacing it with with something worth 7 times as much and it works out to cost barely anything extra to run...

Were those numbers bases on the cars being in or outside the warranty ? Thats what concerns me not to go near the preimium stuff where you cant get a sensible warranty to cover the big invoice items.

The numbers are based on a 530i with no warranty versus a 330i with warranty. It is in this area where the savings are largest.

The difference between a more modern 530i and a newer 330i would be even higher - I beleive i have one of the last of the big BMW's where you are not mind bendingly mad to run it without a warranty. At least I don't need everything that breaks recoded to the car...

I think the figures I've found are wrong.

According to a ozzy site I found my car can do 25MPG City and 45MPG highway. I can wish :p.

Figures for the V8 which is slightly more economical are 21MPG City and 30MPG Highway. I get 12-15 around town and low 20s on a run, so not a million miles off.

Gave my Saxo it's weekly fill-up today.

In the last week it's done what I'd call a normal week for me. 186.7 miles of a complete mixture - city driving and A/B roads and motorway. I, ahem, drive it like I stole it :D and cruise at 80. Used 4.56216 gallons (I always brim it).

So that's 2002 Saxo VTR (1.6 8v 100HP) on ~50K: 40.92MPG.

According to Parker's book is 42MPG.

Car I'm thinking of getting is rated a good bit lower though!

Well over the weekend i have covered 122.4 miles and used 18.24l of fuel, which i worked out to be around 30.5 mpg and that was a mixture of motorways and back roads, so not too far off of the 31mpg book figure

Well, with the new car (E60 525D), It seems i'm getting pretty much official figures (42mpg combined).

I put £40 @ £1.35/l from a completely empty tank when i picked the car up on Friday, i've done 200 miles so far with 80 miles left (apparently - and it seems pretty spot on going down), so give or take 10 miles, i'll have covered 270 miles on £40 (just under 30 litres = 6.5gallons = 41.5mpg. I've certainly noticed the difference from 28mpg from the mondeo lol.

ibiza got 24mpg over a-b roads official official figures state 33mpg

mondeo tddi 45mpg over last 260 miles on a-b roads offical figures state 47 combined mpg

Volvo S60 D5. Official figure from Parkers of 42mpg. Achieved 41mpg over the last tank, but that was mainly because 80% of it was motorway cruising. More normal driving is 30-40mpg.

my car (astra 1.7dti) doesnt have a economy computer so i cant play :( but mpg converters normally show about 55-60mpg official mpg is ment to be 60. Dads 2.0d xtype is around 42-45mpg and that is ment to be 50, ive only ever seen it do more than 50mpg once and that was driving like the throttle was made of glass

My Leon Cupra 4 was quite accurate on the mixed and urban cycle.
Extra urban was out of reach as I don't have the patience or a foot light enough to reach their figures.
I averaged around 7 l/100km on mainly urban, and they said similar.

BMW reckons the Z3 will do 21MPG in town and 30MPG on the mixed.
I'm averaging 25.5 on the mixed with a very heavy foot, so that sounds about right.

sorry i forgot to post up on this,

took one photo, which doesnt allow you to compare, but basically I managed a rather unheard of 310 miles out of tank,

I blame this high level of mpgzz on my awful employment status at the moment :p

Average over last 7 days is 31.7mpg.

Plymouth to Chippenham to Bath to Plymouth to Exeter to Salisbury to Eastleigh then through Southampton.

Now 7 miles left in tank :D

I have no trip computer but I do monitor all the time. My odometer is instead set to viewing mileage since last fill up.

Best I have achieved is 27.5 mpg on combined roads compared to the 33.6 mpg quoted as average. Generally I only achieve 25mpg as I do go into lift every so often on long journeys and my daily drive is urban and short. Worst I have achieved has been 22.5 during the coldest part of winter. :(

1996 Nissan Primera 2.0 eGT - 25-ish average. High 20s - 30 if I'm careful. Low 20s is what I usually get because it just grips, and grips, and grips, and therefore I drive it like a hooligan :D

Almost 8,000rpm in 1st and 2nd = fuel not lasting very long :D
