******Official War Thunder Thread*******

But why does my tank feel like it's made out of paper mache, everytime it's normally a 1 shot kill on me. Either I blew up outright, or it knocks out my crew so all I can do is sit there and watch.

Also why is my middle tank gold? I hate that tank! All the armour is red to it!
I can only seem to get crew 3 to research.

Ok let me try and answer your points:

This game tries to be more realistic so if you shoot in the right place with the right ammo you can potentially 1 shot any tank all the way from the lowest tank to the best tanks (ammo rack, crew compartment etc). That being said low tier tanks like in your screenshot are all basically paper mache machines which mirrors how things were at the time/outbreak of the war. As you go up through the ranks certain tanks will start to become better armoured.

The gold tank is a premium vehicle so it earns more money and more experience.
This game is different to others, you don't want to skip down lines of tanks you need to keep a line-up of tanks that compliment each other rather than focusing on a single one. So for example in your screenshot above you should try and find another tank for the middle "choose vehicle" slot that is also 1.0 (like the gold tank) so you can choose from 4 tanks in battle. You can expand to a 5th if you want to pay the 50,000 too (if you have something researched to use the slot that is).

If you switch from Arcade to Realistic, you could also chose a plane for one of your crew slots instead of having 4 tanks you could have 3 tanks and 1 plane etc.

https://wiki.warthunder.com/Beginner's_guide_to_tank_battles - there are also some youtube videos giving guidance on ground battles.

I'd highly recommend realistic rather than arcade, particularly for the matchmaking and *some* semblance of historical accuracy. It won't help with the 1-shot kills though but arcade sucks because of all the player markers and aiming indicators tbh.

That middle tank is gold because it's premium. Premium's are good because they increase your reward rate (most importantly, research towards new vehicles). You also want to pay attention to the battle rating, so the little number in the bottom right. That number determines who you get matchmade with - e.g if you added a 3.7 to your line-up, it would take you and your entire line-up into a battle with other 3.7's and obviously your Reserve tanks would get super pwned.

Happy to help you out some time with a quickrun through, maybe on the OCUK discord or something?

I've been quite enjoying the game tbh, I'm up to BR 3.3
I've generally been favouring faster flanking tanks, I've had a lot of fun with the different flakpanzers.

I was very frustrated to begin with, that Pz.II C was a terrible tank, UNTIL I got the upgraded ammo, then I could actually kill people. It was a painful slog to get that ammo though.

Good to hear. Yeah the stock syndrome is very real in this game, the same can be said for crews as well. The differences between low skill and max skill crews is another big factor in tank performance.
Stick with it though, for me the sweet spot was 5.7-6.7 or thereabouts depending on nation, certain nations have better lineups than others at different BRs.

I've been working on my crew, mostly putting points into vitality. What else would you recommend?

Also, bit of a silly one, is there anyway to only show the decals you've unlocked?

Much like real tank warfare, often the one to get a shot in first, wins. Therefore, I would always recommend with tanks to get your Gunner "Targeting" and Loader "Weapon Reloading" skills maxed out first. For air crew, I always go for "Stamina" for the Pilot first, then "G-Tolerance" for those lengthy dogfights :) The latter gets more important in higher tier with faster and more powerful aircraft.

So bringing this back, those that still play this, have you heard anything if they plan to "fix" the low settings graphics, add some Red Faction destruction to the maps? Jumped back in again, but... it can get boring with the same ooooold gameplay.

The game sadly is absolute dog **** now! It's gone worse than pay 2 win, it's pay 2 play after 3.7 BR! I do miss the good old days of this!

When where those? :p

The way the maps are made, game modes, vehicles, gameplay in general, is very, very bad. It seems like the Call Of Duty in the tank world...

I must have imagined them! Lol
Lol, no man, was simply curious.

I mean right now I'm shooting straight at a plane coming towards me, score no hits (although AA is fully upgraded for accuracy, crew too, except the ACE training - just on expert) and he gets me quickly. Each time in a game (3 times, one right after the other) and happened again the next game. Others shoot through smoke like it isn't even there. Wonder if there are cheats going on or just simply ol' server being crap.

What made War Thunder great for me was joining a squad. Jumping on regularly with a group and just having a laugh and being sociable. The problem is these group's always inevitably move on. Usually because of poor decisions by the developers. Gaijin are particularly awful!

Cheats are rampant but Gaijin still claims they don't exist... you can play with very low settings meaning smoke etc isn't there for them etc
