reinstalled this and had a fly around in the rank 1 stuff. i quite like the PVE tank matches, but they seem to be able to one shot you from about 5k away.

I had a quick look earlier and cant see how that is true? There are many planes that are not purchasable by GE and you start off with a tier 1 plane.
Edit: ah ok yeh I see now. Though it says you can unlock it my completing in game tasks, I presume its like before where if you do a lot of stuff it unlocks.

You get the first couple of tiers of planes and the rest are in 'closed beta access' so you buy a pack to unlock the faction from what I gather.

It is a blatant and unnecessary money-grab. But, plenty of people have paid £93 to get HMS Hood in World of Warships, so less than £10 for early access to a tech tree seems almost sensible!
They've unlocked 2 more planes, but I never much liked the Italian stuff anyways, so probably won't play them much. The biplane battles are good fun though

Pretty much all they're adding then is T6 tanks, so something that will take a 6 month grind to get.
Oh and the £30 boats are still on occasional test servers iirc, nearly a year later

They haven't, it's closed beta unless you pony up still, and even then it's only one weekend a month or so the servers for it are up.
Last I saw boats were absolute gash too

Game is in a good place at the moment, still plenty of fun. Higher tier meta is better now. Addition of French is nice for variety but kinda kills the "realism" aspect, since so many of them are prototype tanks. Missing more game modes and maps tho.

Has anyone picked up any of the recent top tier additions, Abrams, T-64B or Challenger 1?
I burned myself out at the weekend trying to grind the Challenger 1. Used a "+50% exp booster for 50 games" that I'd had sat around for years, completed it and unlocked 220k but I lost the will to live by the end. Playing Brit 7.0 with Sabot against OHKO HE filler is an exercise in futility, occasionally you get a lucky pixel shot and hit the ammo rack but most of the time you either kill the gunner+commander/loader in the turret and they reverse away to repair, or you kill the driver to immobilize and they turn and 1 shot you.
