Nice :D

Howcome you went for the single CPU rather than the dual?

A few of the apps I use would benefit much greater from the 3.33Ghz Turbo Boost of the single core or 3.2Ghz of the dual core than the 2.66 Turbo Boost of the 2.26Ghz.

I would have bought the last gen 3ghz octo core but this was really on the edge of the budget as it is and single core apps wouldn't have seen a decent enough boost over my MBP 2.4 to warrent the £2k.

And the cost was £2,233 IIRC.

Dual 2.26 = £2200
Dual 2.66 = £3100
Dual 2.93 = £4500 or something equally ridiculous :p

Ridiculous amount of money compared to building my own i7 PC but I just don't want windows to do work on :(

Personally i would have paid the little bit extra and got an Octo 2.26.

The single threaded performance may not be as good but the multi threaded performance is way better. Since everything is becoming multi threaded it makes more sense to me. And with the amount of expansion on RAM with the Octo core Mac Pro's it makes more sense.

I think the single CPU Mac Pro is useless. IMO. Can someone explain why it is good to me? I just can't see the point in it. Same with the over priced iMac with the dire 9400M in it! Pretty much all Apple refreshes since the MacBook Pro have been bad. The MacBook Pro Unibody seems like the only good logical upgrade, these new refreshes seem poor in comparison.

Bring Steve back!

EDIT - Just seems like a clever way to make you spend more money!

Don't need 16 cores :p

Ok after some deliberation and common sense, i've amended the order by only ordering the 2.66 (well by canceling and re-ordering!)

Being a 6 year old inside I kinda jumped on the 2.93 thinking I must have it but after some careful thought the 2.66 will be MORE than enough.

And 118% more money for 113% more single core performance and 104% more multicore cinebench/geekbench performance doesn't really add up.

Nor does the 6 seconds difference in a after effects bench!

If, in a years time I decide I want more power then I will buy another one as I doubt I will loose much (if anything) on a year old MP!

Common sense has prevailed!

I'll spend this money on a new lens, or something less computery!

Mine told me it would be 72 hours for my MacBook to come. It was here within 24!! :)

When did you get the shipping email tho?

Its 6PM in china atm and even tho I know I can get something from HK in 24 hours they were usually sent in the morning!!!

I got my shipping email at 10:49 UK time...

Ok well one issue I have (The only one I might add) is any USB mouse jumps all over the shop sometimes, incredibly annoying :|

Both work perfectly on my MBP tho!

I can do a bigger write up later (its transferring all my data from my MBP etc) takes a while!

Ok, First impressions:

You can hear it (although its on my desk about 2 ft away from my ears!)
The stock 1TB seems to be a WD Black (so now I have two in there). It took me all of 10 mins to fit a 2nd DVD drive and rearrange the HDs so its now:

1. 300Gb Veloci
2. 1TB Black
3. 1TB Black
4. 500Gb Videos/Disk image storage <--- I could fit a 74Gb Raptor in here if anyone can think of a good reason to do so?

Anyway:
OS X installed in 15 mins flat (with languages and some drivers removed), all the apps etc was installed within an hour and I managed to get a sustained 100Mb/sec between all 4 HDs in the machine. At one point I had 60Mb/sec going to HD 2 and 100Mb a sec going between 1 and 3.

Core temperatures at idle are abit high for my liking (60+) but hopefully a speed control app will be along before soon. At first start the 4870s fan ramps up to max but it does that in a PC too so no matter.

Boot is all of 1/2 circles on the grey apple screen. Time to desktop? 20 seconds maybe? I will time it later...

Pics again later. (Need to tidy up around here!)

Edit: First piccies ;)

Lets see some Photoshop benchies :p

Doing what?

I dont get how they do photoshop benchies!

PS: The 4870 overclocks nicely from what I can tell.

800/1000 on stock V @ 60C load 40% fan speed.

Machine is: 2.66 Quad, 6Gb (3x2Gb) 1033MHz ECC DDR3, 4870 512Mb ATi OEM card.
300Gb Velociraptor, 2x 1Tb WD Black, 500Gb WD and two DVD-RWs.

And yes im 100% sure 12gb would work :)

Awesome dude, near enough same system im going to get, same quad core, same ram, gfx etc :D, all iv got to do now is decide between raptor or SSD boot drive :D I think ill order tomorrow, how many days did it take for your system to come through ?

SSD would have been nice but bootcamp requires that you install it on the boot drive.

Splitting 32 or 64gb wouldn't have been enough for me.

One day i'll go SSD!

Edit: Shall run that thing ASAP, just doing a handbrake to see how quickly it will get through my James Bond DVD compared to my MBP!

2.4Ghz MBP = 25FPS
2.66Ghz MP = 120FPS

So its n half quick :p

Ok that benchmark took 43 seconds

The cores were barely loaded for any of the time!

Something aint quite right there!

Edit: iPhone syncs perfectly with both systems.

SWEET!

Hah, I have some bigger. But if you fancy sending me that one il be happy to try. I was thinking more like a 16bit TiFF from a 5D2 raw.

Nah, 689.5Mb TIFF file size. I doubt even the 5D Mk II can beat that?! :p

Tad under 1Gb in photoshop :o

Edit: 31 seconds now with a time machine backup in the background with the correct settings. Shame PS isn't 64bit :(

Well the mouse pausing turns out to be the keyboard too!

Be it scrolling through a web page, document or itunes there is a pause every few seconds.

Oh and there is a pop from the speakers every so often too.

Currently for a £2k machine? 5/10...

Ok dokey!

Been using it properly today, and apart from that lag on input every few seconds... I LOVE IT! (Contrary to my previous statement :p)

Build quality: 10/10 - Can't fault this really apart from one tiny thing, the door at the front is half a mm out from the rest of the case (yes thats all I could find :p))

Cooling: 10/10 Following on from the good old G5 design, nothing really has changed. Zones cooling, independent fans (which im coding software for to control them, but my limited coding knowledge has caused me to hit a wall, if anyone wants to help me here that would be great!).

Cores idle (from the chip itself) is about 35C, which is not bad at all IMO. Load is hitting 90C and the fans arn't increasing, it doesn't crash and hits about 95C after handbrake load, I want the software to decease this by increasing the fan about 500RPM.

Noise: 10/10 From a sitting 2ft away at my ear level point-of-view, its pretty dam quiet! You can hear the fans just about and you can hear the velociraptor clicking away but its a nice sound so doesn't bother me, always liked a good hard-disk click when seeking :)

When you have it under the desk I doubt it would bother anyone!

Expansion/Upgradeability: 8/10There is space (just) for another row of HDs IMO, just cut a cm or so off the heatsink (the area could be regained easily using slightly denser fins). Two DVD drives is enough, could use blu-ray but i'd rather buy a PS3 for that than have the additional cost on the MP.

Memory, as established, 4Gb sticks are here, so thats 12/16Gb, and to be honest if you can afford that and need more you would be getting the octo anyway.

PCI-E, 4 slots, the first is doubled spaced so you don't loose a slot thanks to the 4870 dual slot cooler, allows full length cards cooled by a dedicated fan.

CPU, from what I can see it uses a heatspeader (unlike the 2.26 octo!! mac rumors it ;)) so in theory I can wack the up and coming 3.2Ghz i7 and 6Gb of non ECC in there as the X58 chipset supports it.

Ports on the back and front, the two FW800 on the front do puzzle me, but then I think its directed towards HD cameras so quick download etc? USB and headphones are useful on the front. Three on the back (all used, KB, iPhone, Printer), use the two on the front for SLR/memory stick so useful all round there. Optical in and out, 2 FW800, microphone etc, all nicely spaced out along with two gigabit ethernet ports. All in all nicely designed although some could say more USB ports on the back would be a good improvement. Some are calling for eSATA, although from my experience of having 3 drives using it I wish they would stick with FW800, the connections are weak and keep disconnecting so having no eSATA on the back is hardly a loss IMO.

Speeeeeed: 10/10 Tricky one really, what do I class it on? MBP? What the 2.93 would be like? What the octo could be like? Well im comparing it to a June 2007 Macbook Pro 2.4Ghz with 4Gb. Handbrake encodes at 4-5 times the speed (yes 4-5 times! - in theory it should be 2-3 times as fast due to double the cores), the HT really helping there. Turbo boost in Windows seems to be stuck at only one more multiplier, I really hope this isn't the case as the desktop i7s do better than that!!! Responsiveness is excellent, Lightroom is far smoother now, if this lag wasn't here it would be superb!

What else can I say really? Superb purchase IMO. Apple should have notched down everything tho, the 2.66 should have been around the original 2.8 octo mark with the 2.93 coming in at the current 2.66 price level, but hey ho.

My advise to anyone thinking about it is:

BUY IT!!!!

:)
