Oh Dear, more ATI 58xx mysteries!!

never use driversweeper or drivercleaner! EVER!

even with a format it wont work on windows 7, which by they way had been using with my 5850 since these cards came to overclockers.

something odd happened completely by random which wont let me install the CCC and drivers on Windows 7 anymore.

All I can say is, someone who won't even say what error they got when installing drivers, after overclocking their card, changing bios to overclock and most likely overvolt their card then has problems and doesn't even consider the possibility its their own fault, then comes up with a list of what Nvidia does well, almost all of it incorrect, and an ATi list of whats wrong, again almost all incorrect.

Always had driver problems, horse crap, people who constantly update to every driver and every beta inbetween and run all kinds of driver cleaning programs unsurprisingly, run into every last problem. Those who stick with full releases, or more importantly, releases that are REQUIRED, will have almost no problems, frankly roughly the same as with Nvidia releases.

As for up to date, or behind on games, ATi almost without fail have a hotfix driver with any game fixes for all the big games except maybe 2-3 in the past few years, the day of release. Even TWIMTBP games, infact you could mention many games, like Crysis for instance that ATi release a hotfix(not beta, they are final drivers) about 3 days before release, while Nvidia, who had about 8 different beta's out in the first 2 weeks of the game before fixing every little problem. The fact that happens for multiple TWIMTBP games is hilarious considering they should, in theory have performance and drivers down for games they've invested in WAY before launch, not 15 beta's in and around to get what they want.

Anyway, 5850 on win 7 RC(haven't bothered installing my copy yet as its always a hassel) and it still works almost fine, powerplay is borked, so what, played a variety of games, new and old without issue since I got it.

You've also pointed out you overclocked, that could still be the problem. Why oh why do people think optimised defaults are useful or stable? Admitedly if you've installed windows it might not be an issue, but it still could be. OPtimised defaults are simply mobo defaults, not YOUR HARDWARE. Considering memory voltage on default is often, very often below the spec of the memory, you're likely not running correct settings for memory and possibly other things.

EDIT:- I always see people say loads of them are faulty and loads of people have problems. How are people unable to work out that during release of a new product when demand is far higher than at other times, more problems will be posted because more people have them. IE 100 people post problems of 4870's bought in the last month, that would be high because they probably aren't selling very many, 100 people posting problems on 5850/5870 bought in the last month would be proportionally very few as they've been in massive demand and probably sold 5k or more of them. From the various threads, its more like 10's of people that have problems, on early drivers and lets be honest, very few of us are running stock systems and not overclocking the cards which WILL bring up other faults and problems, thats just life.

I've been extremely happy with my 5850 until...

Yesterday, I left my desktop for an hour or so, came back to discover a blank black screen. Blue light on the monitor, so it was receiving a signal. No picture. I had to shut it down several times and remove the DVI cable from the monitor before it would work. But I put it down to the monitor. Now I'm not so sure. It's the first experience of this. Also, since yesterday, the fan has started at 100% then settled down (by itself). It has never done this before. I'm using Win 7 x64 HP. It is okay again this morning, but I am experiencing other weird issues which I have not been able to resolve. It's not one thing in particular and I don't think it's *just* Windows 7 either, but I can't be sure. All my hardware is working as expected so it is a mystery.

Edit: and just to add, my card is at stock.

I've been getting the fan revving up to 100% during Windows login randomly since buying my 5870, it's annoying when it happens but I've come to expect stupid things like that with ATI drivers.

I've not had any major stability problems though.

i've been having problems with my 5850 since i had it, like sometimes when i get in to windows the whole screen goes yellow or green or white or black, then after about 50 seconds it comes back saying driver not responding and the right side of the screen goes wierd then comes back to normal. its also does this sometimes when watching tv or doing something on the desktop.

also today i had a new issue, i was borderlands playing for about 10min then the whole screen went pink with lines.

my screen went green with black lines yesterday after playing WAW online.

I put it down to the fact i had my card clocked at 900/1300. Once rebooted and clocks returned to normal everything was fine and gamed as normal.

User error was my cause as i'd not clocked it back to stock after running a bench the other day

I've had nothing but problems with nVidia cards and I think their driver designers should be sacked en masse.

But i'm not narrow minded enough to suggest that all their products are faulty as a result. I have an 8800GTS in the girlfriend's machine that's running sweet as a nut.

I think the majority of all graphics cards issues lie between the chair and the keyboard.

Thanks for that post Drunkenmaster, couldnt have put it in better words myself.

So many people reflashing and overclocking these 5800 cards, you are bound to expect some problems. Blaming it on the hardware or software just doesnt cut it for me either.

who saying about overclocking? most peoples issues is at stock and all my issues is at stock, so i still can't blame it on the hardware or software????

as for reflashing, it's to see if it fixs the issues. for me it as helped a lot..

For some people yes. But some are generally causing issues for themselves

phil did u turn off the sleep options in windows 7 ? :D

Why do people insist on using driver sweeper and other driver clearing programs? In my experience these inevitably cause issues, in a large amount of threads where there is a problem there is also a mention of driver sweeper or such like software. (Were these even designed with win7 in mind? I doubt it!).

Clearly there are a few "teething" issues with this card as there have been with every generation of card ever released Nvidia or ATI. If you want to be bleeding edge you deal with the consequences.

I remember buying the GF3 on release day and also the 9700pro, both had major problems for me. The 9700 was incompatible with the Asus A7V333 motherboard and the GF3 caused horrendous problems with my sound a creative Extigyg at the time.

It’s interesting that people are quick to mention the number of threads about ATI in comparison to Nvidia or Visa Verse at particular times, there are barely any NV threads as they aren’t selling any cards, when the new cards are released (which I will probably buy if I have the money), there will be a forum full of threads with problems 80% of which the problem will be sitting 30cm from the screen.

Either way I guess these are all the joys of being a guinea pig...
