oil again

cool, so, in theory, it makes little difference whether it's 0w40 or 5w30

and what of the OMGTURBODIESEL text often found on some cans?

Correct, although the oils are very different. The 5W-30s are low Ash for the VW 504 507 spec. BMW LL04 is more of a mid Ash oil.

Turbo diesel is just to help consumers, LL04 is a diesel spec developed for diesels with DPFs (and to some extent gasolines with cats).

LL01 is the high Ash variant for high sulphur/ poor quality gasoline countries (outside Europe). Not for use in diesels.

LL01 = LL04 in terms of engine test performance in the BMW approval tests.

Also, is there *really* any difference between 0w40 and their 0w40 OMGTURBODIESEL range. Both are Fully Synth, what else do they add to the TD oil, if anything.

Yes, lots of detergent, you can use a diesel engine oil to clean the insides of your engine, takes @300 miles, then you can change it, or keep using it.

A better option is to chuck a bottle of engine flush in the old oil for a few hundred miles before the oil change, carlube do one for about £2 a bottle.

Still going to happen :) I like to know that the engine is in good shape. If I want to do any oil change in 6k miles because of upcoming large mileage, and for my own peace of mind, then that's what I'll do. I really don't need an internet forum to validate my decision, thanks.

However, if you want to continue derailing, please, carry on.

Large milage is the exact type of use longlife is good for. Unless a shopping car doing 3k a year is more suitable to extend to 12k changes.....

So the low oil light came up on my dash, to my horror.
Turns out that the dipstick is more difficult to read than I thought.
I checked it only the other week and it seems fine, but evidently it was only oil residue. Whoever designed that dipstick is a moron. It's burgundy for goodness' sake!

So yeah. M54. Any recommendations?

It looked like there was oil between 2 and 3, but there isn't :(

Nothing is more annoying than the faffy-crap-oil-check-thing on an M54. Don't forget that 0.000000000000000000000000005 degrees variation in slope parked on can result in a totally different reading, too

I'm not happy. It's got me worried. What oil should I buy?
Tempted just to go to BMW and bend over as I need it ASAP.

And I was really impressed that it hadn't used any oil.
But now I'm concerned that its empty after only 6500 miles :/

The oil level warning light is just that, a level light (unless it was red... in which case you're in trouble)

Castrol Edge 5w-30

What the heck? It just needs a top up, calm down. Go and buy some LL01 approved oil - Castrol Edge will do - and top it up.

Only one topup in 6500 miles is exceptional - stop worrying about it. It's not 'empty' it just needs a litre of oil!

The low level light comes on after it's only used a litre? I thought it would've meant you've used a lot more.

Freakout over :o

Yes, its not an OMG WTF light, its an 'Add 1 litre of oil when its next convenient' light.

All of this is described in your owners manual :p

We are talking about the light that comes on after you switch off the engine right?

Ah yes, it does say top it up at your convienence (when you next fill up).

I saw the don't drive more than 20 miles, but it came on after I stopped, not during.
It just spooked me.

Point still stands, that dipstick is ****.
