No character to a 5 Series? Blimey - I could understand that if you said all BMW's left you cold, I mean, they are not for everyone but to then say the 3 Series has character but the 5 doesnt

visually i prefer a 3 series. a 5 series with sport kit is nice tho

Sorry, just dont like them much, prefer the latest model more (unbeliveably)!! The 330ci chassis and 3.0 6cyl is in a different class than the 5 series and the cars im looking @

So why not get a 330i then - you should be able to afford one for your budget - they are cheaper than the 330Ci, built on the same chassis, same length, just as quick..

Want 3 dr coupe not saloon. Anyway, im moving away from the other possible cars im looking @. What will handle the best out of the BMW, Leon, Accord, S3 and VRS???

So whats the MG ZT and Octavia vRS doing on your list? One is a hatchback the other is a saloon.

If you are loooking at X-Type then take a look at Mondeo ST220. Same platform, more sporting car. But you said you want a Coupe, but then, hmm, the X-Type is a saloon :p

Do you even know what you want?

You clearly prefer the 330Ci but don't think you can afford one, well you CAN afford the saloon version of EXACTLY the same car - and you clearly dont mind saloons as you've said you looked at X-Type and MG ZT, so whats the problem? Am I missing something here? A 330i would seem ideal?

the 3.0 inline 6 is the same as in the 530 isnt it?
the chassis on the E39 is also pretty good. there is not a hugh amount in it 5 series / 3 series. i have driven an M3 as well as my M5 and there isnt much of a difference in the handling ( although to be fair the M5 has uprated suspension)

edit - E46 M3

in which case this doesnt make any sense! :p

To be honest not much of this thread does what with his declaration that he wants a Coupe even though most of the stuff in the thread are hatchbacks :p

If its looks your after, then fair play, but if not, you should go for the Leon Cupra R, its got 5 doors, but who cares? handling is sweet, I personally think it looks great although this will probably be debated :) , and for 10k you can pick up a good 02 plate 210bhp model, the seats are very supportive, the engine is a VAG 1.8 Turbo, same as the A3 and vRS. You would get a good car that doesnt cost the world to run. Porbably a better choice than a BMW 330i. You would save slightly more on fuel too.

OK ideally 330ci!!! Out of the S3 and Leon Cupra R, which would handle best and be quickest? Maybe take into account remap? Quite like the 4wd and leather seats.

Is the S3 proper 4wd of Haldex?

If its just Haldex it'll handle like a FWD car.

Buy RWD - buy a 330i.

Why? I thought Haldex was just an electronic diff that controls the torque by applying more torque to the rear wheels when the front wheels lose grip.
So if your driving normally then you would never notice the absence of torque at the front. Dunno if thats right or not, just my assumption.

Trader has a nice X reg 330i on there for 10k....I would hate to think of the repair bills though.

You can get Revo remaps for the 225bhp VAG engine to get about 270bhp. Put a new exhaust system on there and an performance induction filter and you would be looking at at least 280bhp. LCR is a great drivers car, go for it :) cant sing its praises enough!

Exactly - so when you are driving around normally its a front wheel drive car until the front wheels begin to lose grip...
