Old Gatehouse - Build Log

The wall to the architrave is 2.02m and the long length is around 4.6m

The units along that back wall measure

100cm pantry unit
60cm oven unit
40cm tall larder
20cm for the end panel

Some pantry units are a little bigger at 120cm i think.

To be fair, on the plan it does look substantial. I have a thread on here called "Critique my Kitchen Design", in there is the top view which makes the pantry unit look much bigger!

@The_Craig - Yep, painting will be a pain, but we needed to get the old kitchen out before we could paint as the plasterer needed to do some stuff and we couldn't wait so long with no kitchen!

@gam3r - The extractor goes out the side wall, taking it through the ceiling would've been a pain, and even though there's a bit of a gap between the vent and the chimney it looks ok.

Thanks Marv, yes I had seen the plan and never noticed the dimensions, just had another look and there they are. :D

I've only got 1550 from wall to door which limits us to double oven or corner unit not both.

I guess depending on the width of your architrave you could cut some of it off to squeeze both bits in, but could be pretty tight!

Well the Bank Holiday weekend was spent sanding and painting. God i hate painting. Only did the hallway and the utility/pantry (I call it a Utility and the wife calls it a pantry, no idea who's right :p) so no pictures as they're only small and difficult to photo. They were both quite dingy colours though and had loads of marks on the walls so painted white now they both look a lot brighter. Also cut down the length of some shelves and moved the fridge so the door didn't catch on it. The whole thing works much better now.

Saturday presented a non-rainy day for the first time in a while and for the forecast too so i took the opportunity to do lots of sanding.

This bannister had been painted white and was looking really grubby. There's a matching handrail at the top of the stairs which is unpainted so we decided to strip it back to wood. So f'ing awkward because of the shape but about 2 hours later i was left with this. Going to stick a clear varnish on it and put it back up

Also in the pic are some scaffold boards. Following on from this thread (https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/t...or-cube-storage-thing.18827549/#post-32013861), i decided the best/quickest/cheapest option was to buy Ikea Kallax units and frame them in sanded scaffolding boards.

I've bought 3 of the 2x2 cubes, but the wife thinks it's too long so i'm going to go back and buy a 2x1 unit and end up with 5x2. The spare 2x2 will go elsewhere, luckily they're only cheap.

The scaffold boards come in 13ft lengths, this works out nicely because i needed around 7ft and 3ft. So 2 lengths gives me what i need. The leftover i think i'll use to make some matching doors.

Annoyingly the belt on my belt sander snapped on the first one, so i was left with a random orbital one which took about an hour per 7ft length. I would've used my electric plane but i decided i wanted to be able to be much more selective as to how "finished" i wanted it to be. So have kept some knots/damage that would've otherwise been removed.

I wish i'd bought a dust vacuum years ago. Considering how much sanding i did the garden was in a decent state afterwards. I did lose suction towards the end though so need to clear out the filters.

And finally, a very rough test to see how it looks.

Everything is too long at the moment (more so since i'm reducing the length of it all), but the plan is to overlap the join to the right, But there are 2 lengths of wood side by side. One top piece will overlap and upright and the other upright will go all the way with the horizontal piece cut short. So you get end grain on both surfaces. Hopefully that explains it roughly!

I think when i have more time i will definately look to re-build the cube structure myself because there's going to be a lot of wasted space as it is and i would prefer some custom sized compartments but for now this gives me 80% of what i want.

Not sure how normal it is but these scaffold boards are quite badly bowed. I need to joint them up and plane them down. Hopefully keeping a lot of the "weathering" in place.

Also my initial plan was to fill in the gap to the left (caused by skirting board) with wood and paint it white to blend in. Think i'll do it with scaffolding though as it's bigger than anticipated. Also the wife doesn't want to paint the units which i think is a shame as i'd have filled the joins between the units to give it a more complete look.

Am off from Thursday to next Wednesday so hopefully can get it finished.

I had seen those, there's a firm called Cubit too which are similar.

My thinking for re-building would be more to have custom sized units. Mainly for things like an amplifier as i'd need it double width but only half height. At present i'm going to rebuild one of the Kallax units without the divider to give the width but that leaves huge amounts of wasted space above.

Had a few days off work, painted the kitchen so thats the last of the painting done now thank god. It looks a little patchy. We bought some emulsion that can be used on walls, wood and metal. Unfortunately it isn't great on any surface. Still it'll do for now and maybe next year we can re-coat in something much better.

Mostly finished the side unit. I lost a battle on the size and had to compromise with the single unit. It doesn't look too bad, but i'd have preferred the speakers further apart. The top still needs a little planing on the underside to get a better fit, but it's hugely twisted so it's never going to be perfect without planing it down to about 20mm which i don't want to do. In hindsight i should've cherry picked the scaffold boards rather than just accept the 3 i was given.

I flipped the internal shelves round on one to give myself the extra width. The gaps between the units aren't too bad when clamped. I have fitted some brackets at the rear to hold the units together but i think i'll need to screw them together at the front too as there's still some separation.

Have also bought some interior varnish in a clear satin. Only thing i'm concerned about it the sheer amount of cracks in the wood and how it'll finish up. I like all the cracks so don't want to get rid of them but might be best filling them with some kind of resin.

Also find the issues living in a semi-rural location. The house is full of spiders! We counted 20 in our bedroom the other day. Also had a couple of these beasties

Brief update. I'm sure i've made the odd other thread along the way, but we have FINALLY finished the front porch.

My wife took the opportunity to buy new tat to fill it with.

The only issue is that i can't get the tiles clean on the left side. I've tried brick acid and no success. I was going to take a wire wheel on an angle grinder to them, but i fear that'd destroy the tiles! I might look to get some T&G oak and lay that to match the front door.

Below surface level. I do have some drill attachment stuff brushes but even them and brick acid did absolutely nothing.
