Oled out of the box now what.........

I was surprised that 4k hdr disc reviews do not reveal the peak nits/highlights for them so that you could understand how well they might match your tv;
I assume it is because metadata is inside the (unbroken) drm, on the other hand some of the folks have dumped it from youtube vp9/webm 4k hdr trailers though.

Vincents' discussion on tone-mapping implied Superman 4k hdr was >1K nits
It probably is, I was just using pan as an example, mad max is another that's above 1000 nits

Whether a calibration is worthwhile is a matter of opinion, some people think it's a total waste of money and some think other wise, what I would say is if you can have a look at a calibrated screen and then have a look at the same screen in say movie mode you will see the extra detail a calibration brings out, then only you can decide if it's worth the money or not.

When IMDb had its forums, I remember people slagging dark films because they couldn't see any darkness. Godzilla 2014 being one of them. They gave it low ratings because of this.

The same discussions sometimes pops up on hardware forums with graphics drivers. Colours have changed, colours pop more and so on. Or game updates and people saying the game isn't as clear, harder to see details and so on.

Or if they do experience a correctly calibrated display they think it sucks because they can see so much shadow detail thinking it is foggy since they've been so used to clipped blacks, colours and peak whites. Since so many now say the picture looks so flat. Or the most common one, the display is too warm or looking yellow.

Then the same goes for the huge differences between display and printer output. Same problems. Loss of detail or printouts too dark.

I never said that mate, having the correct settings on your sound system is just as important

Isn't it funny. Funny that you're only used to what has been set. Accustomed to this for years. So if you're used to years of bad picture and sound quality the correct way will freak you out. As it is such a drastic change. Since also so many love a bassy sound out of their system. This was the same problem I ran into with headsets. People praising heavily tuned bass headsets.

2017 TV Shootout Results: LG, Panasonic & Sony OLED vs Samsung QLED

Interesting review of important tv characteristics ...

stuck in my mind ....
  • Vincent bough a calibration tsar in from the US (that must have cost)
  • who were the ~30 panel evaluating the tv's (no public invites ?)
  • Absence of BFI and full colour calibration CMS on b7 was a surprise
  • Assume they used 4K discs throughout, was not very clear
  • Q9 won the daylight viewing category
  • Thought the upscaling test was maybe invalidated because they used an external freeview player (not plex/dnla with internal decoder) they appear to have used just out of the box settings too.
  • Sony won motion
