Olympic Track Cycling

A stunning performance by the girls there, decimated the American team and set 6 consecutive World records as well.

Ed Clancy is in a decent position as well in the Omnium so hope he can capitalise on that tomorrow.

Looking forward to being there tomorrow evening - Clancy looks in a good position, I'm assuming he'll do v well in the individual pursuit and 1km TT, but I'm guessing the scratch race will be a tough one for him, guessing a silver/bronze at best?

Incredible to watch, WR's smashed and almost complete dominance from team GB. I don't see how this Olympic performance could ever be topped again tbh, it's just been awesome.

Did anyone notice one of the GB sprint teams racing with uncovered wheels? Forget which one it was. The only team I noticed use them. What would be the reason for using the uncovered wheels when, performance wise, everyone else is using covered?

Most teams will be using spoked wheels (not real 'spokes' though - a single carbon wheel moulded into a 5spoke shape) for sprint and disc wheels for pursuit/time trial (the disc wheels are solid carbon discs, rather than spoked wheels with covers). I didnt notice anybody doing anything different today, but i did miss quite a bit of the morning session.

The advantage of the spoked wheels is that they are lighter. So they are used for short races and sprints where acceleration is the important factor.

The disc wheels are heavier and slower to accelerate, but they are much more aerodynamic. So they are used for longer events where they sacrifice a bit of acceleration from the start with the heavier wheels but make up for it over the course of the race by having the aerodynamic advantage.

What a good explanation, I always wondered about this myself.

You would think that they would open it up to the public, I imagine there would be a lot of interest right now, maybe they could even make their money back on it.

I know amongst the FG community there's been a lot of interest ever since they announced that they were building a velodrome in London
