Omega or Breitling?

Purely from an aesthetic point of view I'd go with an Omega as I think Breitlings tend to be a bit too flashy.

I just got a replica seamaster planet ocean, orange bezel, which is to all intents and purposes exactly the same as the real thing - AR coating on the sapphire crystal, correct logo, helium valve in the right place, a very good pearl. It beats at 28,800bph and has a lovely sweep across the dial. It's heavy and feels great on the wrist. The lume is good, although not nuclear. +/- 4 secs per day.

I asked myself though, would I pay 30-40 times the price of this replica for an official, more reliable movement, better lume and maybe higher grade steel? No I wouldn't. Would I pay that much just for the brand name? No! Would I feel 40 times better? 20? 10? Twice as good? I don't think I would, because to me a watch is just a piece of functional jewellery.

The decison is made.

I am going with the Omega Seamaster 300M Chronometer 212.30.41.20.01.003

It is the nicest looking of the Seamasters in my opinion although I did prefer the wavy face model I thought it better to buy the improved movement and better warranty. There is also the argument that the classic appearance is more desirable long term.

It was a bit of a nightmare finding an AD however as it appears Omega are attempting to make their brand more exclusive and are reducing the numbers of Authorised Dealers in the UK.

Thanks for the advice chaps. :)

Good choice! Post up some pics when you get it.

So why buy a fake aspirational product then, why not just buy a normal brand watch. Sounds just like you have talked yourself into the fact you don't want to spend the money on the real one so sold yourself a line.

Very good choice and the same as mine that I purchased a few months back. Most AD's in the UK stock them, I have seen countless people with the older wave model but not the new ceramic version.

Here's mine:

I've only ever had watches that cost < £200, and all the metal ones I have had just get scratched and scuffed, which pretty much ruins the metal finish. I don't think I am particularly rough with my watches, I just wear them all day and somehow they get scratched.

How durable are these high end watches? Are they made with a type of metal that is a lot more resistant to scratches and scuffs?

different grades of steel

Unless you get suckered into Titanium in which case they mark like crazy.

And great choice Castiel, you won't be disappointed. A much classier watch than a Breitbling.

Good choice, I feel naked without mine if i ever take it off. I hope it gives you a lifetime of pleasure.

My Omega Seamaster Professional is 10 years old, I wear it daily and its still perfect.

Great watches.
Mine is that old too, it hasn't missed a beat!

The new Seamaster Ceramic is simply stunning and comes with the new 2500 movement which can do 7-10 years before a service.

This is my daily watch:

Also have one of these which I wear daily and unsurprisingly I agree, it's stunning and worth every penny...

looks great, did you get a good deal on it ?

in fact it looks that good I might even fish my Planet Ocean out for tonight, not worn it for months :)

They begrudgingly gave me around 5%, but they offered me larger discounts on Breitling and a couple of other brands. The reason apparently is because Omega are reducing availability and ADs globally in an attempt to push exclusivity of their brand. The cash deal gave me the 5% (rounded to an even 2600) , but he wasn't prepared to do anything else.

Still I am happy and would have paid full retail anyway.
