On paper, who will win the WC?

Kahn
Freidrich
Mertesacker
Worns
Lahm
Ernst
Hamann
Schweinsteiger
Ballack
Kuranyi
Klose

Nowhere near good enough, i expect with home support though they will make it to the quarter finals at least.

The Germans will be hard to beat at home and they are spawny buggers too

Brazil should do it if it starts well for them

Personally I think it's about time Spain did something, they must be the biggest underacheivers in tournaments over the past 20 years or so. Can't even remember them even making a semi-final.

I'll just roll out that time honoured phrase - "never underestimate the Germans". Their team at the last WC was absolute tripe, and yet they still reached the final. This time they have a better team, home advantage and their discipline and organisation helps to make up for the lack of skill. I don't think they will win it, but I still wouldn't relish meeting them in a knockout match.

If I had to choose a winner I'd go for Italy I suppose.

Don't forget that like the Champions League, this is a cup competition, so the 'best team' won't necessarily win. If I lay any bets they will likely be on 'outsider' nations, dependent on odds.

Well Totti for Italy has broken his leg big blow for Italy :(

Not quite, has fractured his left ankle and some ligament damage. Shame that, will take him at least 2 months to recover, and even then it will be a struggle for him to become match fit for the WC. Hope he makes it OK. Italy still have Del Piero who can fill his boots though...

Defensively i dont think they are strong enough.
VanBommel isnt a national team regular afaik.
MvB aparentely has aparentely ignored him thus far for some reason?

Speculation is kinda pointless but fun I suppose!
Nobody suggested Greece would win Euro 2004.

Never write off Italy or Brazil. History has a tendency to repeat itself (several times over!).

Shame about Totti.
His form lately has been awesome. He's started to show what he can really do when he plays. Him at the WC, in this form, would be a sight to behold.
If he doesnt go, then good old DelPiero will fill his boots fine, and that leaves an extra striker place for Cassano, or preferably Mr Offside, aka Inzaghi.

I'd expect the Italy side, without Totti, to be this:

Buffon.
Chiellini. (Possibly).
Cannavaro.
Nesta.
Zambrotta.
Gatusso.
Pirlo.
Camoranesi.
Del Piero.
Luca Tona.
Gilardino.

Note 100% sure on the back line, but its safe to say that Nesta & Cannavaro will definatelly be there.

meh they need to play boateng for the pure entertainment of him decking everyone <<< hes my hero :o

seriously though id say england have the best team on paper , its just wether they can play together

If Englands stars steer clear from injury then we'll take all the beating.

Robinson 26
G Neville 31
Ferdinand 27
Terry 25
A Cole 25
J Cole 24
Lampard 27
Gerrard 25
Beckham 30
Owen 26
Rooney 21

I'm never one to build up our chances but 'on paper' we do have an outstanding chance although i'd feel more confident about the 2008 Euro's.
