On The Wagon... then in 'ere!

Hospital again this morning, liver's showing signs of stress but looks Ok.

The consultants advised me that even that my liver's good, he's advised me to stop drinking or things could turn out bad.

That is excellent news and even more reason to stay on the wagon. Life is not worth wasting on drink and if you have an urge to jump off, drop in here and talk about it. :)

I do plan to stay off it completely, not really for health reasons, units meant nothing to me, what's the driving force is the hangovers are ruddy brutal now I'm 41. Never known anything like it, a bottle of scotch which is equivalent to 2.5 bottles of wine, over an evening had me curled up in bed puking for England wishing I was dead.

To be honest, I really did think I'd messed up my liver. Huge relief when the consultant said it was OK but signs of stress.

The sad thing is, I know quite a few people who have died from drinking too much. And I know full well that over the years I'd put away a horrendous amount of booze, Just thought about how many units, probably 80 to 150 units a week was the norm. Quite a lot of moneys worth! :(

Somehow I was still cycling 30 miles a day!

I know quite a lot about drinking too much and the end result .. basically you wake up one morning, look in the mirror only to see two bright yellow eyes looking back at you. This means your livers packed up and you've a few months to live.

If you wake up with yellow skin, you're properly in trouble and you've a few weeks at best.

Right .. off to take my 10 pills! :(

Not had a drink since I made that post here on 21/07. Kinda just 'forgot' about drinking really. Probably helped that I hurt my back AND upgraded my PC so I have something to distract me from sitting around doing nothing and sipping whiskey :p

Think i will join some of you chaps on the wagon, will post updates. Wife enjoys a drink so its not going to be that easy!

Edit. Managed to talk the wife into joining me too !

Stuck my head in the Whisky Appreciation thread, found it odd that people can make a bottle last more than one night, but then again at the price they pay I'm not surprised!

It did actually make me feel quite queasy looking at all those bottles!

Came to the conclusion that a majority of OCUK members must be functioning alcoholics!

I can for weeks, then get drunk thinking I've cracked it and I can have the odd day on the pop. :/

Things got bad, felt ruddy dreadful all weekend.

There is no professional help on the NHS, BTW, already asked. Pathetic eh, you'd think they'd want to help rather than replace livers. I guess it's something you need to do yourself rather than waste their time. :/

Problem is I have a habit of going without and then finding something to celebrate and going over the top, now I'm over 40 the hangovers are horrendous.

This time it was bad, so bad infact I really don't actually want anymore. Going to give 100% this time!

Hospital again next Thursday! :(

Read the book I linked to , its about a fiver surely its worth trying? I haven't had a drink for 10 months now and couldn't feel better and genuinely haven't missed it in the slightest.

Good effort bro :D

I think from memory, things were getting pretty crazy for you a while back? I could be wrong, cant be bothered to check.

But if so, then you are an inspiration man. 10 months is an incredible achievement, you should feel proud.

Have you read it? Wondering if it's any good, not a great fan of self help books.

What's driving me on no is I watched a Horizon episode about alcohol, scary the damage you can do on the pop!

The hospital appointment is for having a camera down the throat to look at the ulcerations. :(

Good effort on your 10 months! :D

Errm I wouldn't say it was serious but I was drinking too much bottle of wine and a beer every night then "proper drinking" on a weekend! Like I say way too much either way I used to smoke 30 a day 15 years ago quit didn't feel any better what so ever but still haven't smoked again.

With drinking however I've lost 1.5 stone in weight , saving £300 a month and feel on top of the world literally. After marriage and traveling ben thing I have every done.:)

I don't read books either but its a very easy and humorous book.Got to be worth a fiver and 6~ hours of your time ?

You don't 'celebrate', you manufacture lame excuses to get drunk. You only sell them to yourself as excuses. Nobody celebrate buying a Raspberry Pi or some junk and 'treat' themselves to 4 days in bed with poisoning and further brain damage (presumably?).

I really really hope things work out for you. Sadly you appear to be in the same state my father was a decade ago. You'll be good for a while and convince yourself that you have a handle on things and that one drink won't hurt. 20 hours later you wake up in a puddle of vomit and clutching an empty bottle.

Anyway, he managed to kick the habit by finally realising that he CANNOT drink. Some people can, some can't. You can't. That's as simple as that.

However, this thread is not about being preachy and being on a high horse, but I can tell you that I have a lot of experience with this type of things and you're nowhere close to quitting yet. It's not something the NHS or whoever can do for you. That will have to come from yourself.

Good luck and keep us up to date. Be great to see you beat this thing :)

In January 2007 I decided not to drink for a month and felt so much better for it I haven't touched a drop since.

I usually didn't read books because I was too hungover or drunk! LOL

Hey you should look into the Sinclair Method. It is a well known fact that the AA and similar abstinence based methods have a 85-90% relapse rate, where as the sinclair method has around an 80% success rate and it doesn't actually force people to stop drinking.

I am pretty good at staying off the booze for a while but I tend to eventually let my cravings get the better of me and often end up having a night or two where I drink more than I intend to. So I'm looking into TSM for myself.
