Congrats Macca , I've not a had a drink since November. Still feel & look awesome.

Well done guys. :)

Until yesterday evening the last I drank beer was in January (before that it was August)

I had 2 pints of Fosters and I came home feeling quite sick and having a massive headache, not to mention feeling very gassed.

It was one of those moments where I've now decided I am going to give up alcohol all together, it's just not an enjoyment anymore for me and if I can do prolonged periods without alcohol then I think I can cut it out completely.

Wish me luck :)

Should be any problem now, good luck. :)

In for reduced intake!

Only reduced, why not stopped?

Only reduced, why not stopped?

Because I currently drink daily, usually a bottle of wine or more. Then on top of that I have nights out or weekends away (festivals/parties) where I will spend hundreds in a night. I'm one of those people who can just drink all night and still be standing having a compusmentous conversation at the end of it. If I listed off a typical nights intake you'd probably not believe me.

So I think it would be most reasonable to immediately reduce my use of alcohol quite considerably but with a view to becoming T total sometime there after.

Anyone who wants to give up, have a look at my story. This is how years of wine has ended up, take this lot three times a day to try to stop the bleeding ulcers and damage alcohol has done to my brain. Nice eh, luckily the brain damage isn't permanent ... apparently.

Oh ... I didn't drink heavily, usually a bottle of wine 4 to 7 nights a week, occasionally like once a month I've have 2 or 3 bottles. If the pills don't work, I'm in for an operation on my throat.

I was hospitalised after a bender a few months back, luckily it was the next day and I was sober when I turned up at hospital. Ulcers had burst, throwing up a lot of blood. Doc said I had the third WORST blood he'd ever seen and I was lucky I wasn't dead because I was close to it. Surprised me as I can cycle 200+ miles a week .... anyway, tee total now ....... or the booze will kill me basically in various ways, ulcers turning cancerous is the main one that scares me, but when my blood turns bad is very unpleasant and can also kill me. All fun!

Sorry to hear that Brenn, hope the meds work and things sort themselves out for you. If you dont mind, can i ask how long you have been drinking that amount for and how old you are ? I drink a similar amount myself.

I'm 41 and drinking like that for about 8 years ... never paid attention to the units, I guessed as I was 14 stone a few more wouldn't hurt, especially as I was cycling 200 miles a week.

There was no symptoms except one day I was sick and it looked like diet coke .. I couldn't understand it as I was only drinking water. Pretty much realised it was partially digested blood. Had an endoscopy (camera down the throat) which looked like a horror show. Doctor diagnosed "Severely ulcerated oesophagus", even I could see on the screen it was bad. Now i'm waiting to see the surgeon to see if they're going to operate.

Thanks Arniston Bay!

When I was in hospital the alcohol dependence nurse came to see me, they get you to hold your hands out infront of you, if you're shaking it's bad, if not it's good. I wasn't.

She said I'm not an alcoholic but I like to drink .. pretty much knew this. Anyway, she was telling me about the people who died due to alcohol, and the yellow people ... so I asked her what the worst thing is she'd seen was, she said "Someone drank their own vomit to get the alcohol back in them".

Im 38, sound very similar to yourself (fit, functional, drink 4 or 5 night a week), its scary. It does seem to be a bit of a lottery with regards to how much a person can drink.

Again, i hope you make a decent recovery.

Thanks for sharing I stopped drinking in November 2015 and I was drinking very similar amounts to you if not more. Your story just further confirms my decision to quit drinking was the correct one.

Whilst I'm at it I'd like to thank Cosimo whilst he didn't do anything directly I took a lot from his various posts and story as to why he stopped drinking. So thanks again Cosimo:)

Thanks for sharing

No problem, I was doing my pills last night and thought "sod it, I'll stick it on OCUK, might help someone".

Basically there was absolutely no symptoms .. that's the scary part, but my oesophagus was obviously seriously ulcerated ... even I could see that during the endoscopy. All from the acidic wine & scotch. Could have been a hell of a lot worse, could have woken up one day to yellow eyes like some people do!

Tee total now, I look forward to going to bed to sleep rather than pass out!

Forgot to ask what was the brain damage that alcohol had done?

I wish I knew, had it explained to me several times and I still have no idea what they're on about. All I know is it shows up on an MRI scan, which I've had 3.

Oh and the ultrasound showed up a fatty liver.

I didn't have a lot of fun in hospital. :(

It's hard to imagine what you've been through, so easy to get used to heavy drinking and not realise or know what damage is being done. I hope that your treatment brings you recovery and good health. All the best and drop in whenever you feel the need for a chat. :)
