If I create a RAID (striped) using the onboard RAID of my mobo (soon to be Asus Maximus Formula SE) and the Mobo failed or I replaced it for a different Mobo - would the RAID still work?

I assume that it wouldn't, that being the case if I used Vista to create the stripe I assume that I could transfer the RAID.

What are the pros and cons of each method?

If the new board is identical or has the same RAID controller then you've got half a chance of being able to keep the array intact. If it's a different controller, especially one from a different manufacturer then assume it won't work, it might do but it's unlikely. If you do have a board problem then the simple thing to do is recover from your backups.

Vista only supports striped arrays of Dynamic Disks and these are only available in the Business or Ultimate editions. Furthermore unless things have moved on since I last looked at dynamic disks then you can't boot from a striped array.

okay - not worried about the booting as i will boot from my raptor, I also have Vista Ultimate. But as far as performance goes, I assume that i will take a performance hit by using vistas striping instead of a dedicated RAID controller?
