one day before my stroke, I hit my gaming PUBG dream (a cautionary tale)

@Threepwood - sorry to hear that - you must have been incredibly unlucky or were you playing some ridiculously long sessions?

Like were you up all night on caffeine/energy drinks; lack of sleep/overstimulated heart rate raised for too long a period of time -> cardiac arrhythmia -> blood clot forming in the heart -> stroke?

Or was it from a blood clot in your legs/DVT? As per people being very stationary on a long flight or immobile in a hospital bed (thus the use of compression socks etc..)?

This thread makes me want to quit the games industry

I wouldn't feel bad about that unless working on deliberately addictive mobile games optimised to hog attention or induce purchases.

I don't think the teams making real games at say the likes of Rockstar North or the makers of PUBG etc. are to blame for anything if this occasionally occurs, they're just providing a form of general entertainment and are no more responsible than say the creators of a TV series if someone decided to binge watch the boxed set and had something similar occur.

I guess I'd see it as like working for a craft beer, IPA firm and feeling guilty about alcoholism when really it's the producers of white lighting, cheap spirits and high-strength tramp-juice largers who should feel guilty.

Sorry to hear about your health problems, please take care of yourself.

Reading all of this has made me think I am due a stroke

Maybe I need to change some things up!

I guess it is useful as a cautionary tale as people perhaps don't think about such things as they might on say a long-haul flight.

I couldn't imagine it happening when I used to play games as a kid - that was more going round to a friend's houses and playing SF2 or Mario Kart on the SNES etc. which typically involved constantly getting up and switching places so different people could play against each other.

Also as an adult, I don't really have any time to play long gaming sessions, more like play a few missions in GTA occasionally and that's it.

I think if it becomes addictive then people definitely do need to be made more aware of the dangers of either lack of sleep from all-night gaming sessions (that seems to be a story sometimes in Japan re: their gaming cafes) and the dangers of DVT from sitting still for prolonged periods of time. Perhaps worse if unfit and/or overweight too... prompting people to try taking breaks and not just sit in the same place while barely moving would be useful.

Thanks Man I was pretty much was on the game until I needed sleep, so easily 10 to 14 hour shifts, every day, sometimes more, sometimes less
my total playtime for that season, until I hit 6k SP was 264 hours, so 11 days, and I did play 1155 matches ( with a win percentage of 2%)
Every single game, I had to get points, so every game had to be either a win, or a top 10 finish,
it was very exciting, probably, kicked in my feel good brain juices every match

Your story sounds shocking and may have contributed to the stroke. However, this type of gaming is becoming increasingly common among young men, i.e. spending a similar number of hours a day playing games as you'd expect to spend in a full-time job. Even outside the NEETs, I hear cases of people working from home and spending the hours they're paid to work playing games instead. Of course, it sounds great if you can get away with it, but it really does dominate some people's lives.

Thanks,Wait what? Didn't you threaten to block me after you showed a lack of reading comprehension in an earlier thread of mine? then throwing a kiddy fit at other posters?
I quess you just didn't have the balls, or you secretly loved me so much that you had to keep me around
get your cholesterol checked, and yes, get fit, and make the time to move around, if you have glued to the PC sessions

I was 42, which I guess in the grander scheme of things is still quite young,I'm 47 currently, and will probably have to wait for cancer to die now that I'm on blood thinners, and statins, I'm not looking forward to being old, and disabled at the same time
*cheery thoughts*

Yeah, I'm sure it's not just young men who are drawn in by what some developers have tapped into, which is making people feel like they have to grind towards something every day.

That's the main demographic, though, and it's quite worrying when you have millions of young men who have no interest in working because video games give them a strange sense of purpose and hit all the right dopamine receptors.

I showed some kindness in here, no need to get a bit shirty. Maybe best to move on from what a randomer says on the internet.

I lacked reading comprehension? Okay mate, I could be extremely mean and rude here, but its not exactly appropriate, sometimes its better to be the bigger man.
I'll stick you on block if you really want me to.

Already on it, as others have said, its a big raise in awareness in the concern and then the reasons why.
I tend to sit a lot at work and through the travel to work, although I would still say on average I walk more than typical employees of desk jobs.
But I am exercising again, not back to the level I did in my early/mid twenties where I was training 5 times a week, but life gets in the way when you have a proper job etc.

so, yeah pretty ridiculous, but then I drew the short straw and got really unlucky, yes.

you're not a randomer though are you, you are known here for failing to understand something, then people call you out on that, and then you back track on what you said claiming that people fail to comprehend what you said, which is usually a bit rich seen as it is often you who has failed to comprehend something! to then having a kiddy fit, calling people names(like saying someone is a child ) that get the thread closed down, like in one of my previous threads( about helping my sister out )

To you I am a randomer, I dont know you only your silly threads, you don't know me apart from silly replies to you. Never interacted with you unless it's through your concerning and frankly stupid threads.
Maybe move on and don't cause yourself any further stress about a random reply on a public forum.

Good health is one of those things that many people take for granted until they lose it. But, it'll happen to us all, either suddenly or gradually.

I think moderation is key. Whether it's gaming, going to the gym or trainspotting, if you do something for too long you're likely to start obsessing over it. Obsession leads to compulsion and then it's unhealthy.

Video game makers actively encourage people to play for as long as possible. When I turn on my ps5 I get a warning saying to take regular breaks, but then the whole platform is set up to make me play as long as possible by getting achievements for doing a certain level, or travelling a certain distance.

Entertainment streaming platforms actively encourage people to "binge watch". It seems to be fashionable too. I hear people in work talking about the latest drama, saying "yeah I binged that on the weekend".

How sad :(

I understand what you mean with video games though you admit to having a ps5, I don't agree that watching tv series on telly is bad though, some of the best times that I have now, is watching serieses with my mum trying to cram as many episodes in during the day fitting around my carers coming in, and dinner being made
'The boys' 'lost' yellowstone', and 'landman' are just too good to miss out on, not to mention 'the gentlemen', and I'm not even includling startrek, discovery, and strange new worlds, which had better bloody come out in spring next year and not the summer, after ending on a sodding cliffhanger, the musical episode of startrek:strange new worlds, is possibly the best startrek episode that I've ever seen!

what do you do at the weekend?
