Online banking

I was with Barclays until the whole card reader rubish that you have to go through to do any kind of transaction. Im now with Abbey and cant believe how easy the service is to use compared to Barclays, I wish I had switched years ago.

HSBC - Been using the online banking since I opened my student account in 2001. It has everything I need and easy to use. Which means i no longer have to go into my bank and queue (unless someone pays me by cheque )

Lloyds is FAIL. They still take upwards of 3 days to inter bank transfer. Shocking tbh

HSBC = Win, they also allow Change of Address too.

The Halifax interface is acceptable but in terms of security the login procedure is wide open to a phishing attack. I hope they implement a card reader system similar to Barclay's.

Alliance and Leicester is easy to use but the security is so lax it is untrue.

Just an account number and a pin.

That's pretty much it.

Barclays has been great for me, but I'm not a business user or anything like that. Some people won't like the card reader they send you that you need to use everytime you log on, but I'm thankful of the extra security and its very easy to use.

I moved away from Barclays specifically for this reason. Having to carry a card reader everywhere that I'm likely to want to use my online banking didn't fit my needs. I was also very disappointed that they decided to only keep the last 30 or so days worth of transactions online.

I've moved to alliance and leicester. None of this card pin code stuff. I do have about 5 passwords to remember but I can do all that in my head. Also they keep 12mths+ worth of statements online, which suits me as I'm not into paper billing!

They also log everything that's been done in your current session when you log out, so if someone's hijacked your cookie and done something naughty you can challenge it.

;-)

Good point. The card reader should be optional just like it is with PayPal. It's pointless forcing it upon the customer because it could alienate and persuade them to move to another bank.

Lloyds does what I need it to do so no real complaints.
Same. Looks nicer and works better than Natwest's system I think. Better layout as well. I did once get a card reader for Natwest online banking but was never prompted to use it.

Would be nice if LloydsTSB did something like that. I like my useless gadgets me. :D

Card readers bewilder me.
I can understand how a card reader might be able to generate one set of number when another series is entered, if the correct chip is within the reader.
I do not understand how a card reader can tell that I've just entered the correct pin, and then generates its series of numbers.

Do those little gizmos have some sort of comms system built in?
My card doesn't store its pin, and my pin can be changed at any cashpoint, so how on earth can my card reader tell I've used the right pin?
Does it simply assume the pin is correct and generate a series of numbers based upon that?

The card readers have a synced clock, which generates a code. The clock is synced with the one of your bank and the codes change together.

The PIN is stored on your card, additionally the number of unsuccessful PIN attempts is also stored on your card. Although this data is obviously hard to read, I'd assume encrypted at least....

Llyods from the moment they brought their online system er online. Never had an issue and it's very easy to use with a nice on-screen interface. I also bank with Nationwide but their online interface is pretty poor, but otherwise functional.

I don't think that's correct, since you can use a card reader from any bank. I for one have been using my GF's Nationwide card reader for my Natwest account.
