OnLive now FREE and WORKS in the UK!

Signed up! Can i play any free games/demos or anything? Can't see jack :(

NeoReloaded - when you say you can't see jack do you mean that you cant even download the client?

When you're logged into the website try going here:

http://www.onlive.com/games

If you get a download link then download and install it. There will be a shortcut on your desktop for the application.

If when you go to that link you get redirected to http://www.onlive.com/account then the website has detected that you're running an OS that isn't capable of running the client. Under Linux I see this happen.

If you CAN download the client then when you run it the first thing it does is check your network latency. If it thinks it's too high then you'll be told and not be able to play.

It's only US servers at the moment. There's no timeframe been released on the installation of UK servers as far as we're aware...

Just tried Borderlands, too much lag, made me feel sick after playing for few minutes, I don't think this is going to work well with fps games.

Otherwise the service looks quite neat to be honest.

But you're not using the dedicated UK datacentres yet. ;)

Saying that, I was able to pull off numerous critical headshots in Borderlands with my sniper rifle. :D

Just finished having a play through of Dirt 2 and AC2 on my netbook, and I must say I'm very impressed. Graphics are ok, lag was fine, the only thing they need to sort is the pricing.

Great service.

Are you saying that the current servers that we are connecting to are US ones?
If so, then blimey am I impressed with this considering the input lag is minimal.

Same here, can't wait or UK servers if the service is this good streaming from America!

Hmm, this seems like a good idea in theory but it's a shame the latency is so high. It really need to be below 100ms....

No latency probs here, the games I tried played fine. Peoples experience seems to vary a lot from person to person though.

What I love most about Onlive, Is for the casual user, It could pretty much make highend graphics card a thing of the past.

How many people out there want to play Mass effect 2? I'm one of them, and i only have a single core processor so I cant.

If Mass effect 2 comes to onlive, I dont even need to upgrade my PC. It will run on my current hardware.

essentially if you have a media hub capable of HD play back. You have a way of gaming with Onlive! I love it to pieces, it's going to save me a fortune.

That is once the UK servers are up and running

I think an Xbox client would be good, it would allow you to play PC games without the cost of a PC, but the xbox CPU may not be fast enough for this...

Well all it needs to do pretty much is be able to render video in HD which the xbox can do :)

Also OnLive are producing a little console box that is going to cost around £30-40 I think? So you won't need a pc/laptop.

I don't get how this works it's not like they have 5000 gaming rigs on their end is it, so where is the data going to be rendered before it comes over to the end user.

im baffled

It does kind of work like that, they have huge specially designed servers to run in the most optimal way. Also most games aren't running at the "highest" settings so AA might be down and the resolution is only set at 720p.

I know in general how the technology works in the background, but I'm still a bit wary of how well it will work in this case. For a business setup, you can do it with a cluster of fairly powerful servers with a ton of memory and cpu power. But you can only do it because in a business, not everyone is utilising the cluster at the same time.

We have 25 desktops running off a single citrix server, but only because at any one time, only a few of them are actually doing something that requires serious resources. Most are reading email, on the phone, working in word, and generally between the lot of them only using the cpu and memory in little bursts at different times, so overall the server can handle it.

For a game, however, the graphics card, cpu and memory usage is a lot higher, and it's pretty much constant. I'd love to know just how much hardware they need to run a full service to thousands of people concurrently.

They have demoed OnLive streaming Borderlands at full speed on an ipad. It really doesn't take that much to decode the format. I don't think Xbox is the correct vehicle though, it already does what onlive does without half the drawbacks.

They absolutely have a market here, it just isn't us. It's for the people who don't care/understand about input lag etc. Those without PCs and game consoles. They don't have to spend a penny on hardware, or know anything about anything. It just works on anything with a net connection. The only issue is the ISP one as far as I am concerned.

Just had a quick blast on Dirt2. At times the input lag was severe and the car was uncontrollable, but overall i can see this being good when we have servers in the uk.

Works ok on an O2 6mb line.

Few screen shots for those who can't connect.

Well not really because:

- A casual user won't have a high end graphics card
- A mid range, £100 odd graphics card these days will run almost every game maxed out (Not guaranteeing AA, but max texture settings)

High end cards are going nowhere, casual users never went for high end so it's a pretty moot argument.
