ONM - MarioKart Wii Review

My problem with MK on the DS was the snaking :(

Is there any way to play as your Mii in this game? In the advert on the TV they are playing and it is their Mii that is actually in the Kart?

Yeh you have to finsh the 50cc class then you can play as your Mii.

I spent almost all of yesterday afternoon and evening going through 50cc & 100cc. Got a few to do on 150.

Online feature is great. Just pushed over 6000 now.

Really want to play this game but it hasn't arrived in the post yet. Was posted first class on Thursday and still hasn't turned up.
Think someones stealing my games as this will be the 4th game that hasn't turned up in the last 6 months. :(

Played it for a while yesterday, suppose it's fun in and 8 year old kind of way, not worth the money nor suprising ONM had to try so so hard to give it that 94%.

i disagree, i think the powerups make it more interesting, after all this is about powerups really rather than a normal racing game and who can get to 1st and stay in front with driving skills.

Nah, but saying that if you get into first online it's dead easy to stay there but if you're in 3rd-5th is so hard to make any decent progress because of the constant barrage of items. Luckily this rarely affects me :)

Powerups suck a lot of the fun out, the DS had a near perfect balance for the weapons.

Can you turn these to minimal or off in online play?

Also you mentioned Brawl earlier, you have played it or you're just going on what you have heard about it possibly being a little laggy online?

I was an absolute god at MKDD time trials without items getting boosts where no one thought possible.

I will definately use a GC Controller if it allows as it's far easier to play with :)

Also can you connect to the internet with a Wii if you do not have a wireless Router? As I am still using wired..

N64 version is still the best imo, this comes 2nd.
I hate the way you can't do 2 player grand prix... it was always better unlocking things with a mate as single player can be boring!

They are set to a milder variant online, in GP they're set to frantic.

Played around 250 hours of brawl since its japanese release and played in a few uni tournaments. It's always laggy even with another UK player both on 20 meg connections. It adds controller lag to compensate for any real lag which sucks in a game like brawl.

Wiimote + nunchuck is far better for time trials due to the way you pull wheelies.

Yes, I bought a Nintendo USB ethernet adapter for my wii.

I wish Brawl was delayed so they could add the online features of mario kart. It puts pretty much all PS3 online games to shame.

Is this better than the DS version? how different is it from the DS version?

IMO, it's a lot worse than the DS version. The DS version is my favourite since the original SNES Mario Kart. The tracks are great and the balance of the power-ups is almost perfect. If they removed snaking, it would be the perfect Mario Kart game for me.

Mario Kart Wii's selection of tracks is relatively poor and the weapons are too powerful - especially on the 150CC GPs. I think they also should have had the conviction to stick to a single control method. It's still good fun but it could have been a lot better.

For the question above about playing as a Mii, its actually the 100cc special cup you have to win to unlock this character. They are Medium class size though so I'm not using mine much currently.

Havn't tried using my wavebird on it yet, how do you pull tricks using it?
By pressing on the dpad, the reason I'm now converted to wiimote nunchuck.
