Operation Flashpoint 2-Dragon Rising.

Can some-one put some screen shots up so we can compair with this pre-lease stuff, max settings and AA even if it does run like a slide-show, if not I'll pop some up laters.

Fair point, I'll get a better one later. Point is whilst I've been playing nothing has stuck out at me as being terrible graphics wise *shrug*

Ballistics

Suppressing fire

Sorry if the above sounds a bit antagonistic, but I found the bullet physics to be pretty realistic. Bullets don't travel in a straight line for an eternity, there is a very small delay between firing and the impact, and different guns exhibit different ballistics behaviours. This is all as it should be.

Suppressing fire is also a valid tactic used to keep forces in place while you get reinforcements, relocate or whatever.

Actually the problem was, the first enemy I saw at massive distance, that looked like a sprite out of a 10 year old game at said distance and rather pathetic, I assumed realistic ballistics and shot above him, nothing, shot closer above him, nothing, shot at his head, hit to the left of his head, the right, above his head, then his head. It felt completely unrealistic, and I wasn't refering to the dot and bullet drop, but the fact that aiming at something fairly close at an enemy standing up, where my line of site went through his chest and at a wall behind, it hit the floor infront of him. Its dodgey and jerky and completely not even in the same realm as realistic, for me.

But I was also refering to the fact the dot on the scope was so ridiculously big that even up close, the dot covers an absurdly large area.

Though I will admit, the 5850/70 had some issue with ridiculously big mouse problems in windows, its plausible that was effecting it in game also(though I highly doubt it).

It just felt wrong, likewise the suppressing fire, I couldn't surpress them because I didn't know where they were, the tree's were fairly close and the ran from truck to behind them, not bad(except they could still see and fire on me), then they went on to attack from the worst location available to them.

LIke I said, I'll give it another go but nothing so far made me go, "thats cool", not even "thats decent". Almost everything has been "really?, i mean, really? thats how you've done this bit of the game", graphics, control menu, aiming, guns, FOV, scopes, vehicle handling and ability to do insane stunts without hurting.

The problem with games like this is that everyone is an armchair military expert and knows exactly whats realistic or isn't, or so they think, and then will slate the game if it doesn't conform to these thoughts. The example above of somebody not knowing what supressing fire was and therefore just panning the AI for daring to fire is classic.

Actually what was classic is anyone daring to badmouth a "sim" gets instantly blasted with, ballastics, supressing fire, don't you know anything.

When infact it was with both those taken into account, that it wasn't realistic. The fact that the ballastics, weren't realistic, I adjusted for them as I assumed I needed to shoot higher, which screwed me.

To describe the supressing fire in more detail, I was at a evacuation point, behind 3 ickle walls with no where to go, they came in cars, ran behind tree's, lots of tree's with close bushes that hid them completely. I had no idea where they were, they knew EXACTLY where I was and I had no where to relocate, except throught he bushes into them. They could have naded me, run into attack, snuck around, instead they ran out in to the open, at a distance, sat their, and got shot. I didn't die, I did nothing but sit still and wait for the AI to do something entirely stupid when they had the upper hand(somewhat).

EDIT:_ I have no problem with them firing on my location, I just can't for the life of me imagine why they ran off into the open at a distance they couldn't hit 4 guys behind a wall, while standing still in the open, they were easy targets, just nonsense. I never brought up supressing fire, I had no need to use it, I felt no danger despite there being maybe 4 left alive out of a convoy of cars having already killed a few after they abandoned the mounted guns on the cars.

are beta testers real gamers? the amount of games that come out flawed to the eyeballs is almost laffable

very few games come out now that do what they state right out of the box, if a game aint ready dont bloody release it!!!!!!!

My copy hasnt arrived yet and tbh I aint all that bothered, you have all put me well and truly off :( (oh well back to cod4, fifa10 360 and gtr evo)

You do wonder how some of these things happen and some games are release as such utter turds. Problem is, judging from the game, it wasn't a case of being uber buggy and needing months more testing, its just bad and in need of an entirely new team and a year or mores work.

Last November I was in Vegas in real life and went shooting a great deal. I shot about 8 different types of gun in real life. I used the exact 'red dot tactical scope' in real life that is simulated within game, with a real machine gun and live rounds (in fact exactly the same machine gun the coalition use down in Iraq). One thing I would say in case anyone doesn't know, is the dot it produced wasn't on the target of the 'enemy soldier' or transmitted in any way outside of the scope. It's kind of just displayed in the sight. There was no red dot sitting on the target saying where the bullet would hit! Also It in real life I'm afraid the red dot is big enough that if you were looking through the sight at a soldier 100 metres away, it would virtually obscure that soldiers entire body. Its not a precise thing -- it looks like a fuzzy red dot thats got a radius of maybe 2-3mm.

Also, I put the red dot directly, exactly in the middle of the target and squeezed the trigger. Firstly, the very first shot actually went to the right. The guy said this is because the kick from the bullet started pulling the barrel up and to the right (if you're right handed) before the bullet had even left the barrel. As for the rest of the shots, they were kind of all-over the shop as I noticed the kick, over corrected, etc. etc.

Just 2 ponts for correctness..

1) The red dot IS IN REAL LIFE massive. Nothing like a lazer pointer. It's not 'transmitted' on to the enemy body showing where your bullet will hit! Its just within the scope.
2) Even the very first shot will not go exactly where the red dot says it will!

To be honest, the majority of the issues will have been brought up in testing. It will then have been waived by the developers as 'as designed'/'not an issue'/'no time to fix' or god knows how many other lame excuses.

wow from Operation Flashpoint to this..........................wat have they done. truthfully guys ive pre-ordered this, cheer me up b4 this arrives, is there any hope for it???????

just watched zombieland, maybe we need a set of rules to avoid getting sucked into game hype and buying (what appears to be judging by most comments) a load of dross :)

1: You're assuming they are all the same, I own one and if I can be bothered to find a battery to fit it, will take a picture (altough I'm not sure how it will turn out) get back to you! :)

2: Depends how well you use the weapon and how much support you have as well.

I dont suppose anyone knows where i can get a trainer for this? I'm finding certain parts of it unbeatably hard and its starting to grate. I know most people hate cheaters but i really dont care, its my game and i'll play it any way i like :)

OK. My machine gun was tripod mounted. I'm a 13 stone bloke. But yes I guess a professional soldier could probably do better.

2 things about real guns that the game never seems to simulate well are

1) The noise. I've never, ever, heard a bang louder than a shotgun in an enclosed space. Without ear protection I seriously with no exageration think I'd be deaf! The only thing I could compare it to is holding your head next to a exhaust-free harley-davidson, in a small concrete room, as it back-fires!! how anyone can shoot without ear protection is totally beyond me ..

2) The shock wave. That smack of what feels like air in the face you get when someone shoots it 6 foot away, shooting away from you! Totally wierd and unexpected the first time I felt it ..

Love the way you sum things up, what was that phrase you used 6 months ago, to some up a load of popular programmes on TV such as xfactor and ballroom dancing etc? (sorry off the topic I know).

LOL

I am an ARMA 2 player so only came here to troll - LOL

I thought this game would be an happy medium between COD and ARMA?

Is this not the case?

My copy of Arma 2 arrived today, going to give it a quick blast tonight before some more hardcore Aion levelling.

I'm sure glad I didnt get OFP after reading through this thread, my mates are picking it up for Xbox tomorrow so I think I'll wait and see how it compares - I will let you know if its any better on the console (which I expect it to be!).

Don't think anyone has mentioned this yet but has anyone else noticed the trees in the game are like giant magnets to APC's?. :p

At one point I was in the APC ( The LAV ) as gunner putting down fire on enemy positions on a hillside. I went to the map and clicked a move order a few hundred metres in front of me. So off we trot until we come to a group of trees which we bump into. Damn.

So I go back to the map and order the driver to reverse a little in order to manouver around the trees. But he can't as we appear to be now stuck to the tree in question. The LAV just sits there no matter where I order it to go on the map. Annoyed, I try and "Hold down E" to switch seats within the vehicle. It doesn't work. The only thing I can do is dismount the APC and try and get in as the driver this time ( if you want something doing - do it yerself!! ).

But as soon as you dismount, the LAV suddenly decides it no longer want's to hug the tree and starts reversing and moving away. It then did something even more annoying - teleported to the position I previously clicked on in the first place a few hundred meters away. Yep, just vanished in front of my eyes and appeared over the brow of the hill next to me where it was promptly blown up with an AT round killing my 3 guys.

I only got this game today and so far it hasn't been particularly good. I don't think it is as bad as some people here are making out ( we all have different expectations and opinions I guess ) but it's not going to hold my interest for long I don't think. :(

ummmm, well I just went out and got my copy and.... well, I think it is not that bad tbh.

It feels solid enough and is more immediate than ArmA2. The cross com system of ordering, while not massively intuitive, I think is better than ArmA's system. Changing weapons and ammo type, also not a problem. vaulting walls, the hand was there right away.

Graphics - not amazing, but on par with ArmA2 imo and certainly not detrimental to game.

Enemy AI - yea, might be a bit ropey, but I will reserve judgement on it until I play a few missions in. They certainly returned fire, and took out one of my guys.

Squad AI - also yea - would like a bit more control, but then again it might be me not being a good commander yet, don't know. However they moved when told and did not cross my FOV. though I did tend to put my self forward. again - time will tell.

Ballistics - I don't know, I don't read Janes. But I could not take out infantry at 400m with an assault rifle very easily, so I don't know if it is accurately modelled but there must be something there.

I can't understand some of you guys who played it for 20 mins and then uninstalled, I think the game deserves more than that.

I am pleased with it so far, but as I said in an earlier post, I am quite forgiving of games. trying coop with a mate tonight and will report on performance.
